To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?

After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

So frustrating not to be able to see it.

Faez · 26/07/2018 22:56

I wanna see lasagne plate

buckeejit · 26/07/2018 22:56

Haha, I love how art is so subjective. It looks great IRL & my photo doesn't get the glory of it. Budget wise I can't afford fuck all as I'm between jobs! But theoretically I'm edging towards £500 but maybe £350-£400 pending additional haggles from dh! I have that in savings that haven't been applied from 40th gift last year.

Sorry some folk can't see it-will try again here

I work in an art gallery...some of the things we sell are by well-known artists and others by new artists. All are talented. The picture you describe is quite large and that usually ups the price.

For a painting of that size, no matter what the medium...an unknown artist will charge anything between 500 and 2000 pounds.

As he's new and your relative, I'd give him whatever you can afford between those figures.

AjasLipstick · 26/07/2018 22:57

Five hundred OP.

Assburgers · 26/07/2018 22:57

I’d say £500. It’s lovely.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 26/07/2018 22:58

I can’t see it!

thegreylady · 26/07/2018 22:58

£300 if you love it.

eightfacesofthemoon · 26/07/2018 22:59

There is a scared woman’s face in it, like she’s trying to stop drowning or being eaten by fire

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 26/07/2018 22:59

Oh I can now!

I like it. I’m not sure if that’s because it does really look like a lasagne plate though Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2018 22:59

Looks like baby vomit mixed with poo.

But I like a whole load of stuff other people absolutely hate as well!

0h · 26/07/2018 23:00

I see a horse nuzzling a boob. Gotta love abstract stuff. Grin

speakout · 26/07/2018 23:00

Not to my taste.

Brown and sludgy, not very inspiring.

I wouldnt display it in my house if I was given it free.

0h · 26/07/2018 23:01

There's also an owl in the corner eyeing up this pervy scene.

Faez · 26/07/2018 23:01

No idea about pricing but it's pretty impressive, would love to see the original landscape though as I can just make out an animal head... or a boob

Thesearepearls · 26/07/2018 23:04

I have got some paintings and some prints

There are art sites where you can buy the artworks from good artists. There are a lot of what you might call daubs by amateur artists - folk in retirement who like to paint a bit. Those go in the range of £300-£1000 for the size of painting you have quoted

For me your painting sounds a very special painting. It's also tremendously important to be fair to the artist. He's a genuine artist. It will have taken a long time. If you love the results - well that's great. Just think about how much you might pay for a decent carpet or nice curtains and put it in that sort of context

Treating this question seriously and honestly I think anything in four figures would sound about right. Maybe less than £2k because he's not an RA sort of painter but he's far better than the amateur dabblers whose work is for sale on the internet.

Witchend · 26/07/2018 23:04

I'd start off by saying I don't think we can accept it as we can't afford what it's worth. Grin

Imstickingwiththisone · 26/07/2018 23:05

Wow I would be totally WTF if someone interpreted a beautiful landscape as this. I am rubbish at art.

Janleverton · 26/07/2018 23:05

In the front there is a mouse with a pointy face wearing clothes. I quite like it.

StaplesCorner · 26/07/2018 23:06

£200 and never mention it again.

Janleverton · 26/07/2018 23:06

It’s like a mouse has been landed on mars or is standing in front of an apocalyptic eruption.

0h · 26/07/2018 23:08

Here's my interpretation. My art skills are somewhat lacking. Grin
