To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?

After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

Heart fine quality print that'd be! Grin

HollowTalk · 27/07/2018 12:19

I don't THINK that a copy on my Brother colour printer would look as professional as an original painting, @myheartbelongsto!

Myheartbelongsto · 27/07/2018 12:24

Well you wouldn't be printing it on your hone printer would you.

"well anyone that wants a copy can print it off for free so not a one off anymore"

You can't be serious? Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 27/07/2018 15:12

Well anyone that wants a copy can print it off for free so not a one off anymore.

I haven’t heard of these “paint by hand” printers that authentically print it on to canvas with the exact oil or acrylic paints. Where can I get one?

Booboostwo · 27/07/2018 16:55

I don’t know anything about art but if I like something and can afford it then I indulge.i have two by C and F. They are huge and look amazing in the space but of course not everyone likes the same things.

21stCenturyMrsBennett · 27/07/2018 17:11

You'd have to pay me to take it, tbh.

Personally I wouldn't pay anything as I really don't like it, but as a PP has said there is quite a considerable cost involved in actually painting it, plus it may have taken some considerable time to paint, so a minimum of whatever it cost for the materials plus something for the time it took to create, plus whatever you think it is worth in enjoyment. Could be quite a lot! (But I still wouldn't want it in my house).

thecatsthecats · 27/07/2018 18:38

Well,I think it's horrible, but the light patches were reminiscent of one of my favourite paintings, and after a bit of searching, I've bought a high quality framed print of it.

So thanks for the inspiration OP!

Bouledeneige · 27/07/2018 22:43

I like abstracts myself but I'm afraid its not my taste. I dont really understand not agreeing the price beforehand.

Fleetwoodmac2 · 27/07/2018 22:50

I would pay him to take it away.

huggybear · 27/07/2018 23:06

Guys, this is ground breaking, but you can actually buy art for a tenner in next 😋

I jest. Depends how long it took him. To be honest I wouldn't pay more than £150 which is what I've been quoted for a commissioned piece before but obviously he can't work for nothing! So I will stick with cheapo prints! 😁😁

TomasztheWankEnginegoesToot · 27/07/2018 23:29

Art is very subjective. But honestly so as not to embarrass him or insult him I would check out how much other things he's done have sold for and give a similar figure but up it if it is a lot larger.

A gallery near me sells things from £70- £5000+ with both known and unknown artists

NonaGrey · 27/07/2018 23:46

OP I love it too. If I saw that hanging in your house I’d ask for your BIL’s number.

Art is very personal. My friend hates the paintings we have in our home. On the other hand I don’t know how they can beat to live with the artwork they display.

If we were all the same it would be boring.

AjasLipstick · 28/07/2018 00:31

Huggy that's not art. Grin

Ilovetea33 · 28/07/2018 01:26

I don't see why you have to do all this research. Presumably he managed to set a price when he was selling at the art fair, why can't he do it for you?

InterstellarSleepingElla · 28/07/2018 01:45

@ginandbearit I absolutely love that! Stunning!

barefootinkitchen · 28/07/2018 02:15

I’m an emerging artist and sell abstract art from my website and at art shows. If you aren’t represented by a gallery you have to find a way to price your work fairly. A lot of artists find it tricky to do, maybe that’s why your BIL has left it to you.
Art materials and canvas doesn’t come cheap, and when you work out an hourly rate - my plumber , cleaner get paid way more . Art buyers pay higher prices for original art as they appreciate things that are unique and handmade.

It is awkward pricing a painting for family members. I knew a relative liked one of my paintings so gave it to her for her birthday to avoid this situation. I really wanted her to have it in her home and show her I appreciate her support .

HattieAndHerBoy · 28/07/2018 05:00

Barefoot I’m genuinely interested in knowing how you know you’re an emerging artist. Is it something you’ve decided yourself or is it something your peers, established/successful artists, have decided?

AjasLipstick · 28/07/2018 05:21

Hattie an emerging artist is one who hasn't been professional for long. Hasn't had many exhibitions or made many sales.

If an artist has only had for example 3 exhibitions or been part of group exhibitions and sold a couple of pieces there or in galleries, then they're emerging and not established.

flumpybear · 28/07/2018 05:27

Not keen on the pic but I prefer blues - those images of the horse now i don't think you can un-see lol!!
I was going to say there's a 'tales of the unexpected' episode where the artist has to write a figure that he thinks it's worth and if it's less than what the gallery owner secretly writes she'll buy it - perhaps do this!

Ps it doesn't end well for the gallery owner lol 😆

HattieAndHerBoy · 28/07/2018 07:06

Ajas, thank you. Smile

lizzybennett1926 · 28/07/2018 07:20

Not to my taste but I can see the effort that's gone into it. Tbh I'd say as others have suggested that it's worth more than you can pay but pay say £500 if you can afford it.
What does he sell for on Etsy?
