To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?

After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

We commissioned a small piece of art 30cm square and paid £350 so I'd definitely be thinking above that however he's put you in a difficult position. I'd probably go for £400. It's not my taste but he's done what you asked and you like it so my taste is not relevant.

imsoboredwithitall · 26/07/2018 23:12

@AjasLipstick good work there

arethereanyleftatall · 26/07/2018 23:12

@oh that's funny. I'm not sure the op will be able to look at the photo without seeing a cow/horse sucking a human tit.

OhHelpNooo · 26/07/2018 23:12

Oh my word. That is . . . not to my taste. I am glad you like it and hope the following helps.

Over the years we have collected a fair few pieces of semi-abstract art and have paid between £250 and £3500. Depends how well known/established the artist is, also how much I love the work. Gallery prices though, would have been cheaper if we had bought direct. I do have a fairly recent direct commission of a small acrylic (30cm by 30cm) was £260.

It is a very wide range. Have you really nothing to go on to gauge his expectations?

eightfacesofthemoon · 26/07/2018 23:15

Tried to highlight the screaming lady and the chimpanzee for you all. The chimpanzee is obviously masturbating behind something, but you can tell by his expression he’s furiously going at it.

Some said straight away, the price would be around what was paid at the art fairs?

It’s a very awkward situation. Not helpful but... a price should have been arranged at the beginning. 😊

Did you think it may be a gift?

nocoolnamesleft · 26/07/2018 23:21

Hmmm, about £400 - £500? More if better known. Agree with "what they normally go for" as a guide.

I'm assuming it's either a road or a river curving down the left, with foliage at the top, and probably an earthen bank , with green vegetation at the base, coming down from the right?

WaitrosePigeon · 26/07/2018 23:22

It looks like sick

Janleverton · 26/07/2018 23:25

This is the mouse

I love this game! Your mouse looks like a rabbit though

AjasLipstick · 26/07/2018 23:25

Duck no OP says clearly that she expected to pay.

Nocool I don't think it's meant to "be" anything.

buckeejit · 26/07/2018 23:26

Love all the interpretations. It should actually be turned 90 degrees to the left & be hung as a portrait for the original intention but I quite like it this way. I also see a nipple out 2in there!

Ajas The OP said it was inspired by a landscape painting...so I'm trying to work out backwards what the landscape may have been.

Flowerfae · 26/07/2018 23:29

I like it, has he used the paint-pouring method? if he has, I would love to know how he got it to look so smooth. I'd say around £300-500

RyvitaBrevis · 26/07/2018 23:31

£400-500 by size alone, plus it's really well done, you love it, and he has a degree from Central Saint Martins.

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/07/2018 23:31

What was the original landscape?
Can you tell us OP.. trying to figure it out but just not 'getting it'

Loopytiles · 26/07/2018 23:32

Was the landscape painting that inspired this of Jupiter?

buckeejit · 26/07/2018 23:34

I haven't got the original landscape I liked-it was sort of a snow covered cliff face with a lot of brown colours in the rocks-we're both fond of precious stones & colour variations & this is quite reminiscent of a large colourful semi precious rock formation.

I’m incredulous as to what some people will pass off as art. It’s hardly a Constable! I’d not have bought it.

MatildaTheCat · 26/07/2018 23:35

Paintings by unknown artists have virtually no resale value so you pay what you feel comfortable with. I’ve just bought a similar size abstract painting from a friend for £800 because I really love it and it really works in the space I have it in.

If I fell on hard times I would probably struggle to sell it at all. I think the ‘give me what you think it’s worth ‘ stuff is silly. As a commercial artist you need to state a price and be willing to negotiate. Like any other commodity.

MaisyPops · 26/07/2018 23:36

It's not to my taste at all so I'd look on etsy and use that as a rough estimate.

llangennith · 26/07/2018 23:37

Is this post a variation of The Emperor's New Clothes? Why are people passing this off as art?!
It's a truly horrible mess. It isn't nice.

ThereIsNoSuchThingAsRoadTax · 26/07/2018 23:38

Is the bottom right corner a chimpanzee in a milkman's uniform performing a salute?

steff13 · 26/07/2018 23:40

I quite like it. I think 400 is fair if that's your within your budget.

Deshasafraisy · 26/07/2018 23:41

Minimum £500
But to be honest I would have a talk to him and ask him to give you a price. Asking you to guess is only going to cause upset
