To ask how much you'd pay for this painting?

After seeing a landscape scene that I liked, I asked my bil who is an artist, (who was with me at the time), if he would do me a painting inspired by it.

His work is abstract, he's only sold some items through art fairs but he is very talented imo & luckily I totally love the painting he's made us.

However, I said 'great, send us the bill' & later dh said similar, and bil said 'just assess it & send what you think it's worth', or similar.

Neither of us know what to do, dh says whatever we send, he'll be insulted! Grin

What would you do & how much?

I think you've hit it madhattermum mentioning Mars, it does have a Martian quality, I was thinking of vistas closer to home in parts of Death Valley, Utah or Arizona maybe. I really like it and I'd pay between £400-£500 for it.

flatulencebythebucket · 27/07/2018 01:13

Artist are ten a penny so maybe £20. We've a lot of artists in our family.

WattdeEll · 27/07/2018 01:24

Crying at the wanking chimp and horse sucking a tit. Grin there’s loads going on in this photo. Top left chimp is looking horrified at the wanking chimp and tit scene.
Love the plate of lasagne comment too. Amazing how art can be interpreted in so many ways.

I love it. I have no idea about art, but I love colours and I love how it makes me feel. (Does that matter at all?)
Some people are fucking rude.

This has been so entertaining! OP said at some point it was a landscape, loads of people 'loved it, including people who work in galleries.
Then casually drops it in that we've been looking at it the wrong way up.
Also, can't show online gallery as BIL lives in Mexico...
Yes, this artwork should definitely be put up for sale in Harry Enfield's shop I Saw You Coming!
Brilliant!

HattieAndHerBoy · 27/07/2018 01:48

Your confusing posters. It’s not the OP’s BIL who lives in Mexico.

80sMum · 27/07/2018 01:58

Art is such a subjective thing! If I like an artwork I make a judgement on what I am prepared to pay for it.

If I were buying your bil's painting, OP, without knowing what pricing he usually placed on his work, I would be thinking of offering in the region of £500 to £700 for it.

OnThisHill · 27/07/2018 01:59

Oh, sorry. My mistake.
Still cynical... comes with age.
And fwiw, I do love abstract art so I'm not saying urgh, I could do that.....

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/07/2018 02:01

I used to be an agent for an artist that did similar work and for a commisioned piece of that size we would charge £1500. She sold out several openings and had to stop taking commisions when her waiting list hit 3 years.

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/07/2018 02:04

And my phone can't spell commission/ed

edwinbear · 27/07/2018 02:05

Not to my taste but given the size and it’s a commission it’s £500.

TheOwlTheory · 27/07/2018 02:07

Maybe OP's bil would like some commissions off MN?

Milkshakeminer · 27/07/2018 02:09

Can I ask, those who like it, why do you like it? I don’t really understand abstract art and as an artist would be interested in why people like it

edwinbear · 27/07/2018 02:10

This painting has given me genuine pleasure every single day since I bought it, nearly 10 yrs ago for £2,500 and is about a third of the size

AjasLipstick · 27/07/2018 02:24

Milk I think for some people, it's a combination of colour and texture working together to create a feeling. They get a sense of "something' from looking at a piece of abstract art which they like.

I like some impressionist pieces...but not others. Working in a gallery I have learned that there's no accounting for taste.

Things which I think are hideous, walk out the door daily. Things I think are stunning don't.

Milkshakeminer · 27/07/2018 02:28

Thank you ajas that’s really interesting

HattieAndHerBoy · 27/07/2018 02:55

My instinct on seeing the picture of the painting was to turn my iPad to the left and look at the painting as a portrait rather than landscape prior to the OP posting to say it should be turned to see it properly.

Of the 3 paintings on the thread I prefer the one posted by Edwin. It's very calming.

ginandbearit · 27/07/2018 03:46

Im an artist ..have just completed 150x70cm long canvas version of this for £500 ..I think that wold be about right for the abstract ..framing always extra

HappenedForAReisling · 27/07/2018 04:31

Oooh, ginandbearit that is absolutely beautiful!

Isthisaproblem · 27/07/2018 06:04

The other thing to keep in mind is you want to be happy every time you look at it. If there’s any disagreement or bad feeling over what was paid then it may taint your view of how much you love it. You love the picture and your BIL so pay a good price.

Haint · 27/07/2018 06:10

What is it? Oil on canvas? Board? I work for a picture framer. Pm me if you want details but at that size it’ll be a good £250-300 for a beautiful, complimentary frame

DoraJar · 27/07/2018 06:18

I prefer it the way it’s meant - but minimum £500

Etino · 27/07/2018 06:26

£500, but your best guide is what he usually sells for.
