Just that really. I'm interested in what people consider to be far right and what people think causes it and what should be done about it.

I think it's caused by inequality and people feeling hopeless.

Weird, eh.

longwayoff · 27/07/2018 17:19

Frankly lweji, the ruling classes just see war as another opportunity to pocket more dosh. There's always a handy supply of easily replaceable patriots eager to die for their country. I dont recall seeing jack straw's or blair's sons stepping into uniform to back up theirfathers' recklessness and I wouldn't expect to see any Rees Moggs, Johnsons or Goves lining up either.

Republican President General Dwight D Eisenhower's Chance for Peace speech in 1953.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

From his farewell speech:

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.
(Bold added by me.)

Nothing better than a big old war if you've invested in arms manufacture or even have interests in steel and so on.

Trump did a lot of banging on about having a strong military today.

Utter trouble making bollocks.

Helmetbymidnight · 27/07/2018 17:39

Are we allowed to label Farage a racist yet?

DaisyTwirl · 27/07/2018 17:41

Utter trouble making bollocks.

Nope.
On MN, on twitter, on fb - say those things and there'll be a pile on.

"Nazi!" is a common response to both.

DaisyTwirl · 27/07/2018 17:44

Which commonly encountered opinions do you think are being labelled far right?

Saying anything against Corbyn.
(Although appreciate that it's just a vocal minority of fanatical devotees that do that & not the majority of people).

Helmetbymidnight · 27/07/2018 17:47

So Farage, chief Brexiteer, is racist-

everyone is happy to admit that finally?

Talkstotrees · 27/07/2018 17:48

Daisy, not in my experience. Really? Expressing support for Brexit results in you being called a Nazi? Absolutely have not witnessed this and am appalled. Ditto trans views, but I have much less experience/exposure.

Helmetbymidnight · 27/07/2018 17:49

A bizarre and stupid claim.

Talkstotrees · 27/07/2018 17:52

Seems I’m far right as I think Corbyn is a total disaster. Who knew?

DaisyTwirl · 27/07/2018 17:54

Brexiters as Nazis is on old Brexit threads, gender critical women as Nazis is more a twitter thing.

Can I suggest everyone look st @EmmaKennedy thread on Twitter, right now.

She's going through the DCMS report.

It's damning.

Are we allowed to say that Russian interference in the UK's democratic process is a Bad Thing?

And that Putin is running a Kleptocratic fascist state?

I hope we can.

Anyway, they colluded with Banks and Wigmore.

This is serious.

Even if you voted Leave, you need to be a lot more cautious and aware about modern attacks on democracy from the Far Right. D
Now is not the time to let your adherence to a vote in the referendum push you towards groups thT actually, really seek to destabilise the UK.

(Reading the DCMS report)

'Absolutely damning on Banks and Wigmore

“Mr Wigmore is a self confessed liar and as a result little significance can be attached to anything that he says”

Also suggesting they were being used by Kremlin to destabilise European politics. Holy hell'

Helmetbymidnight · 27/07/2018 17:54

And me. Who knew?

And no one wants to talk about racist Farage. Sad

Echobelly · 27/07/2018 17:55

I can certainly see Trump and his mates at Fox are moving the window of acceptability - take a recent Fox show where a right wing editor went to a rally for Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and spouted about how scary she found it that people might expect that their children 'deserve' healthcare and education provided by the government. This is pushing the line that anyone needing help shouldn't get anything, and presumably the government's only responsibilities should be military and police.

That is an example of trying to make hard-right ideas normal, and a lot of people will swallow it.

Helmetbymidnight · 27/07/2018 17:55

Daisy, you don’t think Farage is anti Semite then?

DaisyTwirl · 27/07/2018 17:55

A bizarre and stupid claim.

Nope.

I did qualify the statement though - that it's only the tiny (yet disproportionately vocal) fanatical Corbyn devotees that do that.

Talkstotrees · 27/07/2018 17:58

Thanks cat, I’ll head over.

Helmet, Farage isn’t racist, he’s a centrist man-of-the people who has been made to appear racist by the virtue signalling lefties.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 27/07/2018 17:58

The far left is definitely the biggest threat to this country. Momentum is shutting down free speech, its leaders are calling to overthrow to overthrow capitalism.

The right needs to wake up and get organised before we are turned into Venezuela.

DaisyTwirl · 27/07/2018 17:59

Daisy, you don’t think Farage is anti Semite then?

Why on earth would you ask me this?
I cannot ever recall stating explicitly, or even implying that he isn't.

Please could you direct me to any of my posts where I have given you this impression.

thecatfromjapan · 27/07/2018 18:05

No, walkingdead, I think the DCMS report makes it clear that the biggest present threat to the UK is another group entirely.

😊

But, hey, why bother with facts, eh?

Andy Wigmore loves people like you. You're led by feeling and emotion.

There's a transcript of a phone conversation in which he spells out how easy it is to fool and lead all these silly emotion over fact people.

Don't be a puppet of the Kremlin and the new Far Right.

Go find some facts.

It may hurt s but at first - but it's better than having people like Wigmore laughing st you.

longwayoff · 27/07/2018 18:06

O walking give it a bloody rest. You're exhausting.

DieAntword · 27/07/2018 18:08

Don’t think the Kremlin really cares if the people who destabilise the uk are doing it from the left or the right. I mean the most effective strategy would be to encourage both.
