Remainer 'moral superiority'

coffeeaddict · 17/07/2018 07:26

I voted Remain but I dithered and I can see both sides of the argument. (Am I the only one?! Everyone else seems to be so polarised.)

What gets me, especially when I've read discussions on here, is all the very vociferous Remainers who talk as though they have a claim to the moral high ground.

I find the accusation that Brexiteers are 'racist' particularly weird. Europe is mostly white like us. How does race play a card? If anything, letting our borders open to all and every European (majority white) means necessarily less room for other people from different countries and therefore different races.

In fact, what is the EU? A band of rich, predominantly white countries banding together to be more powerful. Fine, this might be best for our trade and prosperity. It might be pragmatic. We might like feeling we could go and live in Spain one day. But that's not the same as being morally 'better'.

But a lot of Remainers behave as though they are inherently 'virtuous' and Brexit is inherently 'evil.'

I don't get it.

The 'suits' will never let that happen! It's disaster capitalism all the way now!

I’m not an economist but surely Spain, France and Italy rely heavily on British tourism. Simple economics they need our money. They also need us to buy their produce, we must be a huge market. It is not a one way street, it’s called trade. The UK is also a safe haven economically for foreign money. We are a green and pleasant land. I’m fed up to the back teeth with the doommongerers and naysayers talking the country down. If it’s do bad why does the rest of the world want to come here.

topcat1980 · 19/07/2018 09:41

Its funny that "the suits" were the ones driving brexit too.

I handed out Leave leaflets and the verbal abuse from Remainers was horrific. Campaigning alongside Remainers I noticed they were treated respectfully, where Leave campaigners were spat at, called cunts, racists and verbally abused (one was attacked).

Over half the Leave group I was leafleting with were non-white, so they were bemused at being called racist by ranting white people.

After the referendum an acquaintance said she went shopping and had to restrain herself from spitting at old people as she was so furious with them.

So OP, I'm with you. Look beyond the virtue-signalling and a rather different picture emerges.

I do understand this abuse came from a minority of Remainers but it was enough to stop me ever campaigning publically again.

"If it’s do bad why does the rest of the world want to come here."

They don't this is just made up by you.

5% of the EU's GDP is trade with the UK

15% of the UK's GDP is trade with the EU.

Rosamund maybe because they are all spoilt little millenials who rely on the bank of mum and dad, are dependent on inheritance, and are workshy. They have also been educated by left wing university lecturers. Good luck if she had spat at me or my 83 year old mother.

user1457017537 · 19/07/2018 09:47

Topcat probably because the bar owners and hoteliers are not fully declaring what they are taking more like.

CantankerousCamel · 19/07/2018 09:48

Mother

You act like these things are not connected. Read some naomi klein

CantankerousCamel · 19/07/2018 09:51

topcat

My post was ‘economics is complicated but simply...’

And it is all ‘factually correct’
Though again, conversing with you is akin to wading through treacle, I have no urge to give you an economics lesson today

topcat1980 · 19/07/2018 09:51

"Read some naomi klein"

You appear not to have understood the Naomi Klien you have read.

CantankerousCamel · 19/07/2018 09:52

Mother

Listen to some Tony Benn.

You can never have a proper socialist or a proper Tory government under the EU. It’s too regulated (for better and worse)

You couldn't give me an economics lesson if you tried dear, your assertions are utter rubbish as I have shown.

You don't understand economics at all.

And the reason you are now attacking me is because you can't back up your point.

Oh and your continual appeals to authority expose the paucity of your arguments and your understanding.

Melassa · 19/07/2018 09:56

France Spain and Italy do very well from German, Dutch and Scandinavian tourists, who on the whole spend a fair amount, not the mention the Russians and tourists from Asia. There have been fewer Brits since the pound collapsed and those that do come tend to be at the wealthier end, spend more and are less affected by the looming economic disaster.
The products of these same countries are bought throughout the EU, as well as the US/Canada and China, and now that we have a shiny new agreement with Japan more will be going there as well.
I really don’t think the Brits will be missed as much as they think they will.
And lol at the socialist idyll under the neoliberal Tories! You’ll be lucky to still have sick leave and holiday once they’ve burnt all that pesky “red tape”.

CantankerousCamel · 19/07/2018 09:59

topcat I’m not attacking you, I just don’t want to converse with someone who calls other women ‘dear’ for not agreeing with them. I’m here for leisure not obligation, I’ll communicate with whom I wish. Feel free to see it as an example of my ‘failure’ your praise is not something I care about.

CantankerousCamel · 19/07/2018 10:00

Melissa

Show me one self employed tradesmen or farmer who gets sick leave.

topcat1980 · 19/07/2018 10:00

You were very patronising, so I was patronising back.

Your posts are full of counterfactual nonsense, and you can't back it up, which is the reason you don't want to converse.

topcat1980 · 19/07/2018 10:02

"Show me one self employed tradesmen or farmer who gets sick leave".

They can claim SSP.

Good luck keeping stuff like that under JRM.

CantankerousCamel · 19/07/2018 10:04

Not interested, topcat ‘dear’

topcat1980 · 19/07/2018 10:04

Thats Ok. Its a free world,. I can still counter your posts.

But you don't engage because you can't hold your side of the debate, not for any other spurious reasons.

user1457017537 · 19/07/2018 10:06

Melassa I agree with you re German, Dutch and Scandinavian tourists and also Russian and Eastern bloc. The Brits built places like Benidorm and put Ibiza on the map with re party destination and super clubs. The minimum table spend is about £20,000 and it’s not celebrities who pay, they expect to be comped. British kids spend a fortune in these destinations and in places like Marbella. So I do think we will be missed

topcat1980 · 19/07/2018 10:08

"So I do think we will be missed"

I don't think Brits are going to stop going on holiday to these places.

I mean we might if we crash out with no deal on air travel, but then that will be the last of our worries if that happens.

UK tourists can and will be replaced by others from other countries.
