To wonder how high the correlation is between Brexit supporters and Trump supporters

The press conference with Theresa May and Donald Trump today was one of the most bizarre things I've ever witnessed.

There's no logic in what Trump says, whether that be a recorded newspaper interview was 'fake news' or that he'd been in power for 160 days.

It seems he literally doesn't care what the truth is, he just says things as they pop into his head.

I honestly can't see why people support him, but likewise, I honestly can't see why people support Brexit.

Both defy logic to me.

The common theme between the 2 is immigration though.

Do Leave voters agree with Trump?

I don't believe free trade actually exists though.

look at India- TM went there with her begging bowl and got told she'd need to issue more visas in return for a trade deal.

What's 'free' about that?

I have a question for Leave voters on here.

Does the fact that DT and racist groups like Britain First, EDL, BNP, NF are all big supporters of Brexit not give you any pause for thought? You share a political goal. I'm not calling any of you racist btw and I know this post might look like that's what I'm implying, but I'm not. I know Brexit has a strong racist element but I also know there are strong anti racists who supported Leave.

The reason I ask is because I'm white British, in my 40s, I grew up in a racist family/community. Not terrible, just normal levels of British racism. Example - a relative describing a cousins new boyfriend "black fella, lovely though". I often examine my own views, I know I must be racist (and sexist) in ways that I can't see, I don't think anybody can be raised in this background and not be. I'm not making some sort of hair shirt for myself either, I don't think I'm worse than anybody else, we all have our prejudices, all of us. If I was a Leave voter and saw who the other Leave voters are, it would unsettle me and make me stop and think.

And you don't think they (we-ish*) considered that?

You know Europeons are mostly white right?

*I spoiled in the end but gun to my head would have voted leave.

CambridgeAnaglypta · 14/07/2018 00:26

Kenn not everyone voted leave because of immigration. Why are you trying to cause trouble?

Tessliketrees · 14/07/2018 00:27

And how do they explain to their daughters that they have chosen to abandon their daughters' rights?

I read the feminist remain arguments, they were less than convincing.

Also it's a slap in the face to all the women in the UK who fought for those rights to imply they were handed down by the EU.

Tessliketrees · 14/07/2018 00:30

@CambridgeAnaglypta

Because it's super racist not to support an institution that allows freedom of movement for white people while engaging in diplomatic slap fights over who has to rescue drowning Africans.

Apparently.

abilockhart · 14/07/2018 01:57

Tessliketrees, the reason equal pay was introduced in the UK was in order to pave the UK's entry to the European Community (i.e. to conform with Article 141 of the Treaty of Rome)

Monty27 · 14/07/2018 02:04

I thought I was going to hyperventilate whilst listening to him.
He and Teresa on first name terms boak
She's a remainer. Or she deserves an hour Oscar.
As for him, he's revolting and so is may
Never mind us guys, but they are certainly in it together Shock

JessicaJonesJacket · 14/07/2018 02:21

I know a few Leave voters. None of them are Trump supporters.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/07/2018 06:21

@BischBaschBosch

Nope, what?

KennDodd · 14/07/2018 10:29

Because it's super racist not to support an institution that allows freedom of movement for white people while engaging in diplomatic slap fights over who has to rescue drowning Africans

And yet all the racist groups are concentrated on the Leave side. As for the migrant crisis, you do remember Farage's 'Breaking Point' poster don't you?

lostincake · 14/07/2018 10:31

Well, there were at least two racists at the anti-Trump march - I definitely saw photos of Corbyn and Livingstone protesting, so racists on both sides.

pfttt · 14/07/2018 10:32

Read the Daily Mail comments - the two groups are identical.

pfttt · 14/07/2018 10:33

Livingstone protesting racism???!!!!!

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Could one man have less self-awareness?!

Helmetbymidnight · 14/07/2018 10:37

The MN brexiteers are out in force on the 'Anti-Trump protests are a waste of time thread.'

There could be lots of reasons for agreeing with that notion besides supporting Trump, however it is interesting, if unsurprising, to note.

kalapattar · 14/07/2018 10:40

I'd imagine that most UKIP supporters are Trump supporters.

And most UKIP supporters voted Leave.

And that many UKIP supporters probably have a negative opinion on anyone who protested against Trump.

surferjet · 14/07/2018 10:44

So what?

kalapattar · 14/07/2018 10:46

So what

So that's where the correlation is between people who support Trump and people who voted Leave - it's probably mainly UKIP supporters.

Because that's the AIBU Hmm

Bearbehind · 14/07/2018 10:50

surfers one of the few Brexiters on MN who admits she voted Leave because of immigration and, based on the 'so what', I'm assuming she's also a Trump fan.

OP posts:
surferjet · 14/07/2018 10:51

Right.
The op is not being unreasonable.

And?

Blaablaablaa · 14/07/2018 10:55

I know lots of people who voted leave but who think Trump is absolutely despicable.

People who voted leave for intelligent, valid reasons would never support a racist, homophobic, misogynistic idiot like trump

kalapattar · 14/07/2018 10:56

And

And that's what happens on MN. As you know. Someone asks a question. People respond.

Do you think that if someone thinks climate change is a myth, that PC has 'gone mad', that they have no issue with sweeping statements about minority groups and linking them to crime, that women who complain about sexism should be ignored and undermined, that repeatedly gaslighting people is ok, that they have no issue with mysoginists - do you think that person is likely to be a Trump supporter AND a UKIP supporter?

They have a lot in common.

Meadowland · 14/07/2018 10:58

Is it just me or does anyone else get beyond angry when a Leave voter ( upthread) says 'I voted Leave but cannot stand Garage, Boris Johnson etc"
Please tell me they are not so dumb that they didn't realise those were the very people they voted for ,and who have now succeeded in making us the laughing stock that this country has become.

auditqueen · 14/07/2018 10:59

There's a clear correlation in the minds of those Remainers who like to think those in both groups are elderly, uneducated racists.

I'm a remainder and don't think this at all. There are a lot of young, uneducated racists as well.
