To wonder how high the correlation is between Brexit supporters and Trump supporters

The press conference with Theresa May and Donald Trump today was one of the most bizarre things I've ever witnessed.

There's no logic in what Trump says, whether that be a recorded newspaper interview was 'fake news' or that he'd been in power for 160 days.

It seems he literally doesn't care what the truth is, he just says things as they pop into his head.

I honestly can't see why people support him, but likewise, I honestly can't see why people support Brexit.

Both defy logic to me.

The common theme between the 2 is immigration though.

Do Leave voters agree with Trump?

Both Brexit & Trumpistas are parochial/insular, so of course tend to dislike foreigners and things foreign, as default position. That includes each other's movement and supporters.

"Trump is absolutely a Nazi (or fascist if you prefer - cba to get into a discussion of the semantical differences between Nazi and fascist) and a white supremacist.

OMG. Has Trump started rounding up and gassing Jews in their millions? Weird that none of the Jewish actors or actresses in Hollywood have been forced out of the profession yet and none wearing yellow stars. I guess I'll be able to read about all that in The Guardian though?"

Wow, you are stupid. Or a paid troll. Which is it?

Because you have no idea that Hitler had been in power for 9 years before he started gassing people? That he didn't do it the second he grabbed power?

The man (Trump) who said the marchers in Charlottesville who chanted "Jews will not replace us" and murdered a protester were "all good people" is clearly a fascist just as much as Hitler was.

Plus let's not forget that fascists don't only target Jews. They target all they see as "untermensch" so eg Trump's comments on Mexicans as rapists, on "shithole countries", on locking up asylum seekers and putting their children in cages.

TRUMP IS A FASCIST. This is obvious to anyone with any knowledge of history at all.

The only people to deny this are fellow fascists or paid trolls. Which category do you fall into?

Kursk · 14/07/2018 14:51

Don’t like Trump but I’ll vote for him or libertarian in the midterms.

Anything is better than Democrat

pfttt · 14/07/2018 14:55

UneMoonit

Oh bravo.

Well done for reading of your target source and identifying correctly that many women on MN are angry about those opposing self-ID being labelled TERFS.

However, you're really going to have to work a bit harder at convincing us that that means that all news is therefore "fake news" and the far right are just good guys, unfairly maligned. Grin

GC feminists are well aware that TRAs and MRAs are the same thing, and we know perfectly well that Trump stands on the side of the MRAs and definitely NOT on the side of women. Hmm

pfttt · 14/07/2018 14:56

So good try, but no bonus this week, Ivan.

Though I do admire you for your inventive use of buzzwords in place of logic. Grin

pfttt · 14/07/2018 14:58

Kursk

Wow - welcome.

A US Trump supporter who just happened to find yourself hanging out on a British site for mums on a Saturday morning.

What an amazing coincidence.

Kursk · 14/07/2018 14:59

I thought they were all benefits scroungers and other feckless types.

Well it was a work day....

Helmetbymidnight · 14/07/2018 14:59

It's actually happening in microcosm with the "TERF concept as well. If you don't want to debate whether women should have to have a moral basis for their consent, you're transphobic. It doesn't matter that you're not, you will be marginalized and decried for being so anyway, and eventually critical mass will be hit and people will view that accusation with scepticism, because they KNOW they and their friends are not hateful and horrible and they've been targeted as such. Same thing.*

Yes, I think there are similarities- trying to engage or talk facts with people who can only rant in meaningless slogans:
Brexit is Brexit’, or ‘we won get over it’ or transwomen are women’ means debate is impossible.

Facts are ignored- it’s all about ‘feelings’ now - you feel like a woman/you feel like Britain will have control back, then this is the important thing. Not reality.

What does it matter about Irish border/all those jobs/biology/women’s spaces? We’ll be Great Britain/whatever sex we want to be again.

unsubstantiated, unempirical, fantasy crap.

pfttt · 14/07/2018 15:00

What time is it in Russia the US where you are now, then?

A rather early start for you at the weekend, no?

Kursk · 14/07/2018 15:02

pfttt
I am a Brit living in the US
Libertarian, not a Trump supporter

Kursk · 14/07/2018 15:03

10:00, not that early.

pfttt · 14/07/2018 15:03

Fascinating how we have new supposedly US posters hanging out here first thing in the morning.

And supposedly GC 'feminist' posters who support Mr MRA himself, Trump.

I mean, it's totally convincing, isn't it.

Isn't it?

pfttt · 14/07/2018 15:04

Kursk, how long did it take you to work the time out then? Grin

pfttt · 14/07/2018 15:06

Kursk - "Don’t like Trump but I’ll vote for him or libertarian in the midterms."

Kursk, if you're a Brit living in the US, you don't actually get a vote.

Need to work on that cover story a bit, I think. Hmm

Kursk · 14/07/2018 15:07

I had no need to work out the time?

Apologies but I don’t follow your other post.

Kursk · 14/07/2018 15:09

pfttt

Ok I’ll clarify, I am duel national UK/US. I have however renounced my British citizenship. So I do get a vote.

Kursk · 14/07/2018 15:14

pfttt

I don’t see why I need to but would you like a photo or something?

UneMoonit · 14/07/2018 15:21

However, you're really going to have to work a bit harder at convincing us that that means that all news is therefore "fake news" and the far right are just good guys, unfairly maligned.

You see I haven't taken any such position.

You can't get 3 sentences in without imputing "far right", false accusations, emotive slogans, and at a macro level this is the ongoing problem with political discourse in the UK. People get marginalized and slurred, they exit the debate and use their vote to kick back.

The thing is, millions of people, not far right loonies but ordinary people, are "onto" this stuff and don't accept it at face value: it's fine if you don't want to accept that, it's a problem for you not everyone else, but there is your answer to these "mystifying" votes you think you can explain away by everyone suddenly turning into a nazi.

I suspect a similar phenomenon has happened in the US but I don't know because I'm not a US voter.

If it has, and Trump really is what you ostensibly think, some of the blood will be on the hands of people who have had their fun falsely accusing people of being Nazis for decades, because now the masses quite seriously don't take those accusations so seriously any more.

lostincake · 14/07/2018 15:26

pfttt, I was making fun of your appropriation of the term "Nazi" to inaccurately describe Trump. He may be a lot of things but he is not anti-Semitic (perhaps your small brain got him and Corbyn confused?).

Nazi refers to a very specific historical ideology. If you describe everyone as a Nazi, not only do you dilute the true horror of the word, offend Jews and other minorities who were specific victims of the Nazi regime but you also turn the word into a "boy who cried wolf" term which has less impact because it is overused by stupid people to prove a point. You also make yourself appear like a complete idiot spouting ignorant hyperbole.

lljkk · 14/07/2018 15:29

Scott Adams came out as Libertarian & genuinely supporting Trump b/c he was so aghast at the Dem's plans to tax his wealth. How dare the rich be expected to help the poor.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/07/2018 15:31

He may be a lot of things but he is not anti-Semitic

Whatever kind of racist he is, Jews in the us voted overwhelmingly for Clinton- nearly 70% and opposition to him is greatest where the Jewish community eg. Florida and New York. So I don’t know where you’re small brain is coming from with this but he’s really not regarded as a friend to the Jews in America.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/07/2018 15:39

Nazi refers to a very specific historical ideology. If you describe everyone as a Nazi, not only do you dilute the true horror of the word, offend Jews

Both Simon Sharma and Madeline Albright (among many others) have argued he is/behaves like a fascist. Better tell those Jewish ignoramuses they are diluting the word.

pfttt · 14/07/2018 15:43

Right.

Trump IS anti-Semitic (so is Corbyn, but let's not bring that into this thread, because it's irrelevant. But it's not as though anti-Semitism is a zero-sum game.)

Secondly, Trump is a Nazi. Far from that "offending" "Jews and other minorities who were specific victims of the Nazi regime", we (my family fall into that category) would categorically state that Trump IS a Nazi.

It's because the Nazis murdered so many members of my family that I know exactly what a Nazi looks like thank you.

I recognise Trump as a Nazi and I will call him out as such.

If you don't like that, that is because you are a Nazi, or a Nazi apologist (same thing) or a paid troll.

So which one are you? Nazi or troll?

pfttt · 14/07/2018 15:45

Here's Godwin of Godwin's law making exactly the same point about Trump:

TRUMP IS A NAZI.
