To wonder how high the correlation is between Brexit supporters and Trump supporters

The press conference with Theresa May and Donald Trump today was one of the most bizarre things I've ever witnessed.

There's no logic in what Trump says, whether that be a recorded newspaper interview was 'fake news' or that he'd been in power for 160 days.

It seems he literally doesn't care what the truth is, he just says things as they pop into his head.

I honestly can't see why people support him, but likewise, I honestly can't see why people support Brexit.

Both defy logic to me.

The common theme between the 2 is immigration though.

Do Leave voters agree with Trump?

Of course it was Tory dominated that had he majority of MP’s

But LibDems were part of that coalition and wouldn’t rule out another term

Many people’s standard of living did improve under Labour but many didn’t wages were topped up by tax credits and too many people their wages were stagnant while other increased hugely. the financial crises made things worse but things for too many people simply were not improving while in many cities the economy was booming

How can it be so difficult to understand why when given the chance for real change people decided to take it and the more they were told they would struggle if we leave the more they realised the more anger they felt at how out of touch our mp’s are for not noticing they are struggling

topcat1980 · 16/07/2018 15:42

Wages grew in real terms for every quintile ( without benefit top ups) every year of the Labour government until 2008.

In fact the number of people claiming WTC etc was at a similar level as it is now prior to the world financial crisis.

Comparing the data from the end of the Labour administration with later is not an accurate comparison.

topcat1980 · 16/07/2018 15:46

"How can it be so difficult to understand why when given the chance for real change people decided to take it and the more they were told they would struggle if we leave the more they realised the more anger they felt at how out of touch our mp’s are for not noticing they are struggling"

Because the change is not real nor beneficial, they were voting for pie in the sky dreams where every individual's interests were parpamount and leaving the EU would make things better.

There would have been no votes at all for leave if you'd told people that things would get worse for a decade or so before they came back to where we are now.

Voting out of the EU because MP's are out of touch is ridiculous.

As is blowing off your foot because you have a headache, I mean you aren't going to notice the latter any more but...

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/07/2018 16:14

I think it's naive to think most leave voters considered the economic consequences. Practically no one I know whi voted leave did and this thread has been a pretty good example of this and it contains those that are still interested.
People I know who voted leave did because

Their parents told them to
Their husband told them to
London is a bit crowded.
Believed the Turkey hyperbole
Don't like foreigners.
Wanted to kick out out EU doctors so more Indian ones could come in
Pathological hatred of the EU but when challenged can't substantiate it (for example the EU auditing of accounts which is no worse than how the UK does it)
Believed the 350m for the bus
Didn't like TTIP but actually knew nothing about it.

None of them were about the long term economic benefits that would make economic pain worth it. Actually one said it might be bumpy for a year or two.

I think Steve Baker has been the only truthful leave mp since the referendum, when he said, you say what's necessary to win.

Blaablaablaa · 16/07/2018 16:34

@theworld I know lots of people who voted leave and not one of your 'reasons' applies.
All are professionals, some working in academia and all intelligent politically aware individuals.

Meadowland · 16/07/2018 16:51

Totally agree with TheWorld.
When I had a discussion with a Leave voter, he had absolutely no grasp of the economic impact of leaving, and when I tried to explain that companies and investment would probably leave the UK if we left, he told me, and I quote" that is a load of bollocks." Such was the level of discussion.

Blaablaablaa · 16/07/2018 17:02

Well, your in-depth study of one person must mean all leave voters think/act like that 🙄

rocketpocket · 16/07/2018 17:02

There would have been no votes at all for leave if you'd told people that things would get worse for a decade or so before they came back to where we are now.

They did tell us that. And that there'd be WWIII and that house prices would crash and all the rest of it. There have been polls that suggested most people were aware they might be worse off before they were better off.

topcat1980 · 16/07/2018 17:05

" And that there'd be WWIII"

Nope they never said that, that was Boris who said it about a Cameron speech which was then taken up by the leave campaign. A real piece of disinformation

If the leave campaign had said we will be worse off, as they seem to be now, no one would have voted leave.

If we employ the Minford Model of unilateral free trade, which JRM at Daniel Hannan prefer almost all of our manufacturing and agriculture industries will be destroyed.

Why didn't they put: " You will lose your job but the rich will get richer" on the side of a bus?

rocketpocket · 16/07/2018 17:08

I would still vote leave now. Again and again and again. As many times as they decide we need another referendum.

BoneyBackJefferson · 16/07/2018 17:09

Theworldisfullofgs

I think it's naive to think most leave voters considered the economic consequences

Its naive to think that any voters of either thought much of the consequences beyond how it effected them.

ShackUp · 16/07/2018 17:24

PILs support Brexit but hate Trump they don't understand that one necessitates closer ties with the other

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/07/2018 17:53

blabla honestly all true reasons. Not met one person who researched it except a UKIP fan. And his reason was because of a very outraged view about how the EU audits their accounts.
The only economists I know of that are for Brexit are of the Minford type.

And I don't disagree that lots of remain voters did next to no research either. Which is why referendums are the stupidest blunt instrument of a failing democracy.

It was fairly obvious that if remain lost that Cameron would have to resign and that government would collapse. When I said this to my leave voting ukip supporter and we talked about the ensuing chaos , his words were 'oh well.

Helmetbymidnight · 16/07/2018 18:13

Just looking at a FB site I'm on now - (a hospital one) 'When we're not pouring millions into Europe we'll be able to afford lots of things that we can't now...'. That's getting loads of likes. Leavers who still believe the NHS is going to be fixed by Brexit. Grin

Of course, according to MN, these brexitteers are anomalies, since most leavers were fully aware that they were signing up for a generation of shite.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 19:32

Because the change is not real nor beneficial

But that can be said for many broken election promises

So why not wcpect people to take this chance may not work for but what we have been promised before never came about either

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/07/2018 19:34

So why not wcpect people to take this chance may not work for but what we have been promised before never came about either

This is a rather sweeping generalisation.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 19:43

I have never said all leave voters felt this way

But the the areas of highest poverty and lowest growth voted in higher numbers to leave

Something wasn’t working in those areas telling people that they would struggle if we leave and not acknowledging they already are they were ignored and were not listened to - well that doesn’t suit the narrative of many remainers but there was someone who was listening and engaging Farage

More fool all those that mocked him who didn’t take him seriously and many still don’t and look what we have now

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 16/07/2018 19:45

I’m pro leave, anti trump. This was reason I voted leave and it definitely gives trump more money
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_Trade_and_Investment_Partnership

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/07/2018 20:04

enthusiam because the chance not working out will be catastrophic for many many people and irreversible for decades.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/07/2018 20:04

Farage saw that he could manipulate a situation ie expoloit anti Eu sentiment for his own ends. More fool ordinary folk who were seduced by his slogans.

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/07/2018 20:07

And if you think Farage cares then now are naive.
All Farage cares about is himself. If actually cared he'd turn up to work.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 20:18

If Farage had been taken more seriously and MP’s didn’t ignore the fact that UKIP were the third largest party in number of votes in the 2015 election the referendum bill wouldn’t have gone through and then once Boris jumped on the bandwagon they still didn’t change tactic

I am well aware that leaving the EU isn’t good for the UK but I am open to listening to beyond many remainers rhetoric that all voters are dumb and racist

People need to be listened to they need to feel that their opinions and their fears are not ignored or dismissed as there is always someone around be it Farage, Le Penn who will be there who will give them hope who will displace their anger

It happens time and time again yet what is wrong with engaging with people trying to understand their fears open discussions and listening to their experiences

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/07/2018 20:20

I don’t think Farage cares

I think it was foolish to ignore and mock him

But then again there are many MP’s who’s self interest is what drives them

GhostofFrankGrimes · 16/07/2018 20:23

Leavers arguments about lack of jobs/opportunities are the result of neo liberal economics and globalisation. I’ve not heard Farage or any other leave MP say the want a more just economic system so more fool those who had faith in a new Dawn post Brexit.
