To wonder how high the correlation is between Brexit supporters and Trump supporters

The press conference with Theresa May and Donald Trump today was one of the most bizarre things I've ever witnessed.

There's no logic in what Trump says, whether that be a recorded newspaper interview was 'fake news' or that he'd been in power for 160 days.

It seems he literally doesn't care what the truth is, he just says things as they pop into his head.

I honestly can't see why people support him, but likewise, I honestly can't see why people support Brexit.

Both defy logic to me.

The common theme between the 2 is immigration though.

Do Leave voters agree with Trump?

I believe there is a high correlation of brexiteers who are anti khan. And a high correlation of brexiteers who can’t stand peaceful protests.

CambridgeAnaglypta · 13/07/2018 21:52

IvorHughJarrs you forgot DM readers, doh.

Buteo · 13/07/2018 22:00

You guys must be psychic or something. My Leave voting Trump loving mother reads the Daily Mail. And the Telegraph. If it isn’t in either of those papers then it’s Fake News.

hellsbells99 · 13/07/2018 22:02

I don't know anyone who is a Trump supporter.
I do know lots of people who voted to leave.

MrsChollySawcutt · 13/07/2018 22:04

I think no what you have noticed is that there is an extremely high proportion of gullible numpties in both the UK and the USA.

specialsubject · 13/07/2018 22:10

fake news, anyone? you geldof types are suckers for a tiny opinion poll. these are about as valid as the small print on beauty products.

leave = racist is as dumb as remain = worried about holidays in tuscany and kids not being able to deal in Magaluf.

kalapattar · 13/07/2018 22:16

What opinion poll are you talking about?

kalapattar · 13/07/2018 22:17

leave = racist is as dumb as remain = worried

Maybe it's racist = leave.

I wonder how many racists voted to Remain?

You do understand the difference?

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/07/2018 22:21

My leave voting sis says they hate Trump but actually agree with a lot of what he stands for particularly vehement anti immigration.
But they find him personally abhorrent even though they share fake (and they are ) anti Muslim posts.

Bearbehind · 13/07/2018 22:21

There's a bit more to Brexit than holidays in Magaluf though special

Even Trump was clear he won't make new trade deals with the UK if we are still beholden to the EU and given that's exactly what the White Paper has set out, were a bit screwed on that front.

Trump might get all his facts and figures wrong but he is clear on the fact he will protect US industry.

I'm eternally baffled as to where Leavers think the magic bullet is going to come from.

Voted leave.
Can't stand Trump. Utter prick.

Kingsclerelass · 13/07/2018 22:23

We have a mix of Brexit leave/remain/abstain in our office.

Unanimous on Trump prattishness though. Smile

DMCWelshCakes · 13/07/2018 22:35

I met some pro-Trump brits this afternoon. They were racist (as evidenced by their racial abuse of one of the speakers at the protest). I imagine they would have voted leave, but I could be wrong.

(It's a very strong hunch though.)

I'd say that the proportion of racists who then went on to vote leave or support Trump is very high. But that would be because hey were already racist, not the other way around.

Bearbehind · 13/07/2018 22:36

I think it does go to show that facts and figures aren't what modern politics is about.

It's just feelings and stirring up emotions.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/07/2018 22:37

Ime Many leave voters realise now that voting leave was a mistake. It’s the ones who still think it’s a good idea who support trump, the ones obsessed with immigrants.

LastTrainEast · 13/07/2018 22:40

This actually reminded me of the Flat Earth Channels on Youtube where if you tell them it's a globe they say "you must be gay! and... and .. I bet you love Hitler!" (sometimes they say Obama who they consider almost as bad)

Helmetbymidnight · 13/07/2018 22:43

Ah that reminds me of all those leave voters who genuinely thought they were ‘voting against the elites!’ You’ve got to wonder, right!

bellinisurge · 13/07/2018 22:45

I have a lot of US family and asked a few of them "did Brexit embolden people to vote Trump?"
They all said (in separate conversations) "No- most people don't give a shit about what goes on outside the US - it's just that Hillary was hard to vote for even though f you held your nose". Mix of Republicans and Democrats and independents.

woman11017 · 13/07/2018 22:45

I am puzzled about women who support our own (hard won) women's rights who would choose to have voted for leave and trump.

And how do they explain to their daughters that they have chosen to abandon their daughters' rights?

Seems a cruel thing to do to one's kids.

GrouchoMrx · 13/07/2018 22:49

Brexit and Donald Trump?

One and the same.

BischBaschBosch · 13/07/2018 22:56

@Helmetbymidnight Nope

Racecardriver · 13/07/2018 23:06

I am pro free trade. That makes me pro brexit and anti trump.

Bearbehind · 13/07/2018 23:09

Free trade is a naive concept though.

As soon as you start offering preferential rates that comes with conditions so it's not free trade.

Hence the issue we now have with leaving the EU.

OP posts:
Racecardriver · 13/07/2018 23:17

@bearbehind i mean free trade in an absolutist sense. The best way to create wealth is to remove obstacles from trade so that individuals (businesses and consumers) can choose the best deals for them. Obviously the world on general doesn't welcome free trade hence the preferential traffics issue but both trump and the EU is disgustingly protectionist in its trade policy. Neither party is interested in maximising human labour efficiency or ensuring that their citizens get the best value in terms of cost and quality of goods. I think that wealthy and well educated countries like Britain have an obligation to say no to protectionism and pace the way towards more free trade for everyone. Trump has greatly undermined this. As has the EU. Is simply cannot agree with it because it is keeping everyone concerned poorer.

Racecardriver · 13/07/2018 23:21

It's a shame because I am very pro free movement of labour but I think that eliminating trade barriers has to come first.
