To applaud Aldi and Lidl

For closing stores early if England reach the World Cup on Sunday?

I think it's great to allow staff to be able to watch a great sorting event. They normally work very unsocial hours over back holidays etc.

None of us are going to really suffer if they close an hour early are we?

I hope that the other supermarkets follow suit.

They could probably have easily found enough staff who don't give a toss about the football not to do this. Personally I can't see the point and I bet they're not paying their staff for that hour's work they're losing.

ToadOfSadness · 10/07/2018 12:41

It won't be anything to do with fans mobbing them for cheap booze I suppose.

I would applaud them if their ethics towards palm oil were the same as Iceland (the store not the country) but that's another subject.

Sirzy · 10/07/2018 12:42

I think it’s great and hope that other non essential businesses follow.

Eminybob · 10/07/2018 12:43

I think it’s a nice gesture for their staff.
Don’t know about Lidl but Aldi are supposed to be a great company to work for.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 12:44

I don't get the impression they will dock pay, it states they can go home early. I don't see why five days before the game non football supporting staff should swap shifts, because they don't give a toss? I think it's a nice touch and not to be thrown back in the face of Aldi and Lidl?

I'm sure one hour of them being shut isn't going to bother anyone really? It makes me think better of them actually. So many big supermarkets are wanting staff to work such unsociable hours.

Not enjoying the euphoria of the World Cup @Bluelady?

OP posts:
bluetrampolines · 10/07/2018 12:44

Oh please tell me the palm oil thing.

GabriellaMontez · 10/07/2018 12:45

Are they paying their staff?

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 12:47

@ToadOfSadness what an absolutely bizarre statement!! They DONT WANT TO BE INUNDATED FOR CHEAP BOOZE! 😂 I think they probably do, it pays the wages. I should imagine they won't lose out at all on Sunday in reality as they'll just be busier before 3.

No idea about their use of palm oil, great for Iceland, have they stopped selling horse meat that they call beef?

OP posts:
jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 12:48

@GabriellaMontez it certainly gives that impression, obviously if I find out it's compulsory and not being paid I will change my view.

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/07/2018 12:49

It's a lovely gesture. I'm not particularly into football but will watch with the family. It is a big competition and England have done well to get this far. Let's enjoy the moment.

Bluelady · 10/07/2018 12:50

No, I'm not feeling it at all, it's a load of bollocks. It's a shame they're not as generous on Boxing and New Years days.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 12:51

@Theimpossiblegirl totally agree! No doubt someone will be along outraged at the stores closing an hour early, how it's not fair on them as a non football supporter and they can't feed the family that day as it's the only time they have to shop. 😔

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 10/07/2018 12:53

It is football played by over paid men who have no clue what Aldi is people are just getting a bit too over excited.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 12:53

@Bluelady agree about Christmas Day and Boxing Day as I said in OP they work unsociable hours.

As for the rest of it you may think it's total bollocks (can't think why you do but still) but you must realise that tons of people are loving it. Do you really begrudge them time off?

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 10/07/2018 12:54

Btw I am not outraged I just think it is ridiculous.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 12:54

@MrsJayy sorry I don't understand the second part of your post?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 10/07/2018 12:59

Are they only doing it for English stores then? Hardly fair to those in the rest of the uk if they get paid for going home early. Scotland don't even have Sunday trading hours so they are open later than 4pm. It's a bit of nonsense really

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 12:59

I expect train workers to take the day off too, shame about the thousands of commuters who will have the day from hell because of a football match.

It's getting so over the top I am now wishing we lose the game. At least we would be done with it.

Shops can close early if they wish, and if last Sunday is anything to go by, they will be pretty empty anyway, so it's just good publicity. It's just getting boring though. Why should football take precedence over other sport events that have a huge following too?

ToadOfSadness · 10/07/2018 13:02

jobjobjob I meant the possibility of the stores being trashed, considering the reputation some of the fans have (Millwall recently, lady in her car ambushed and jumped on for example) and I have seen it first hand.

I don't know about Iceland and horse meat but I believe most supermarkets were affected due to using the same supplier of ready meals, and IKEA meatballs. Just as you think my comment was bizarre, so is yours so we are even.

bluetrampolines you mean the Iceland thing? They are removing palm oil from their own brand products.

Bluelady · 10/07/2018 13:03

Yes, let's close the entire country down. It's a GAME for God's sake.

RitaMIlls · 10/07/2018 13:05

Nice gesture, I’m Scottish and not into football but even I’m excited for England so I can only imagine the general feeling down there even if you’re not a football fan.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 13:05

@dementedpixie no idea to be honest maybe they are doing it throughout Britain, hopefully! It is typical though a nice gesture turns into cries of its not fair!

@CtrlCandCtrlV that's the spirit you hope they lose because it's getting silly now, what do you actually mean by that? Well I hope they win! I then hope they win Sunday as well.

And no one stops others celebrating other sporting events but as you may have noticed football has a big following.

mulberrymelody · 10/07/2018 13:05

What time do stores in Scotland close on a Sunday? Smile

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 13:06

@Bluelady Aldi closing an hour earlier is hardly closing the whole country down now is it?? Grin

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 10/07/2018 13:06

They close when they like tbh. Some are 24 hours
