For closing stores early if England reach the World Cup on Sunday?

I think it's great to allow staff to be able to watch a great sorting event. They normally work very unsocial hours over back holidays etc.

None of us are going to really suffer if they close an hour early are we?

I hope that the other supermarkets follow suit.

@poloshot Where did you get it from that Scotland have decided to not compete in the World Cup since 1998?

According to various sources on the internet, they have just never qualified since the late 1990's....

It states it clearly on 'Tournament Summary' further down the page.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland_at_the_FIFA_World_Cup

Nothing to be ashamed of. They are good at a lot of stuff. (Better than the English at some stuff....) Football is just not one of them.

mermaidsandunicorns · 10/07/2018 13:34

I am a former aldi employee they are great to work for! They will more then likely give workers an extra hour in their weekly contracted hours to make up the hour lost If they close. The staff won't lose out they love their staff

Poloshot · 10/07/2018 13:34

@chrisinthesun thanks. I just assumed they'd pulled out of international competitions since France 98......

Thanks for clarifying though.

CornishMaid1 · 10/07/2018 13:36

It is good for those staff who want to watch but I find it a shame. I have no interest in watching it, so had a lovely time out shopping last Saturday - left home just after kick-off and the roads and shops were quiet. It was so much nicer than usual.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/07/2018 13:37

I think it's an awful sport, brings the worst out in people

NC172938 · 10/07/2018 13:37

Closing early for a football final is one employee's idea of a great day off and another employee's source of resentment.

I would be resentful if I worked at Aldi and was offered this, because I don't like football. I would be annoyed that my boss made the assumption that that's when my time off should be. I would much rather have been offered an early finish on the day the last episode of Riverdale came out on Netflix but I wouldn't have been offered that because my employer could never possibly have known my preferences.

The reason holiday, flexi-time etc all exist is so that people can take time off when it provides the most value to them. The whole point of it is that it is individualised, customisable and non-communal because everybody has different priorities.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 13:39

And even if we don't even win the semi final tomorrow, the news about it and the euphoria over how well we did will go on for MONTHS!

not sure why you think people should celebrate and be proud of LOSING. We really are a mediocre country and we should stop pretending to our kids that it's the "taking part" that matters, or that being second is good enough.

SlothMama · 10/07/2018 13:45

Good for them, a nice bit of free publicity for them also!

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:46

@poloshot

That's OK. Smile

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2018 13:46

@CtrlCandCtrlV

Oh, totally agree with that, all those athletes that came between last and fourth during the olympics are nothing to be proud of, after all that represents a medicor country and doesn't give the best impression to the children....

CanineEnigma · 10/07/2018 13:46

I just assumed they'd pulled out of international competitions since France 98.... No no. Our national team is just notoriously shit Grin

eggsandwich · 10/07/2018 13:48

Oh great I’ll sleep easy now.

Jux · 10/07/2018 13:50

It's a marketing exercise.

It'll be bloody annoying for a lot of people who shop there habitually and can't get there earlier, and aren't bothered about football.

I bet they don't pay their staff for that hour. Why on earth would they?

Very easy to find staff to swap shifts. Why would it be hard?

WTFdidwedo · 10/07/2018 13:50

NC172938
God I love Riverdale.

I assume it's because they know most stores will be absolutely dead and the overheads won't be worth staying open anyway. The side effect is it does of course have the good publicity of looking like they care a lot about employees.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 13:52

I can't think of anyone who believe that missing out on a medal by reaching the fourth place is an achievement!

People don't train like mad and make huge sacrifices to "take part", sorry!

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:53

Nice try @CtrlCandCtrlV but England have done better than they done for 30 years, so yes most people in England WILL all be cheering and celebrating when they return, even if they get knocked out tomorrow.

We will be disappointed to have not won the world cup, (if we don't!) but will still be euphoric, and happy for them for getting so far. They will receive a MASSIVE heroes welcome when they get back.

You are more than welcome to keep up your miserable, negative, grumpy-curmudgeon persona. If it makes you happy. Smile I know you will HATE the heroes welcome they get, so it's probably best you stay off the internet, don't buy any newspapers, and don't watch any TV til about late August. That goes for all the other miserable, anti-fun fuckers on here too!

I would literally HATE to have your lives. Sad You sound so soul-less and dull.

Happypuppy · 10/07/2018 13:55

Wow! What a negative thread! I think it’s a lovely gesture FWIW.

Not sure about Boxing Day, but Aldi and Lidl in my town are not open on New Year’s Day.

Lweji · 10/07/2018 13:56

@CtrlCandCtrlV
I can't think of anyone who believe that missing out on a medal by reaching the fourth place is an achievement!

That's also true of the second and third places. No matter how many medals they "win". It's an arbitrary distinction.

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:56

Oh yeah the poor fucking Lidl and Aldi customers won't be able to get their milk at 3.05pm on Sunday if England are in the final.

SHAME!

Bet at LEAST 3 or 4 of you lot on here will complain VERY LOUDLY to Aldi and LIDL for closing early.

HOW DARE YOU I NEED MY AVOCADO!!!

Fucking grumpy bunch of fuckers! Get a life!

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:57

Hiding this thread now before I get banned!

See ya, you miserable gits!

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 13:58

@chrisinthesun brilliant post says it well! Miserable buggars!!

@CtrlCandCtrlV have you ever heard of the phrase it's not the winning it's the taking part! And England have taken part for a lot longer than usual! It's coming home. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

FFS! Its a match. Get a grip!

neveradullmoment99 · 10/07/2018 14:07

And even if we don't even win the semi final tomorrow, the news about it and the euphoria over how well we did will go on for MONTHS!

Yawn
This is exactly why I DONT want England to win.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 14:07

@neveradullmoment99 you're kidding! It's not? It's a match.......thanks for letting me know!

OP posts:
CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 14:07

chrisinthesun
you are being ridiculous, some of us can celebrate a football match for what it's worth without going overboard to fill some gap in our lives. Good for them if they win, they still hardly qualify as "heroes" if they do.

The behaviour of some of the players, usually not even made public, is a lot more admirable.

Most people watch the match, cheer or shrug and move on with their life. It's a bit pathetic to drag it for weeks, months or even years afterwards unless you were a player yourself.
