For closing stores early if England reach the World Cup on Sunday?

I think it's great to allow staff to be able to watch a great sorting event. They normally work very unsocial hours over back holidays etc.

None of us are going to really suffer if they close an hour early are we?

I hope that the other supermarkets follow suit.

@LivesToTravel the store normally closes at 4 because it's Sunday! Do you understand that? That means it would be closed by kick off!

So again explain how closing before the game changes anything in terms of the mob wrecking the store.

The Ikea story is total rubbish, show me something to substantiate it?

Someone is rather touchy about football. If your so adamant they are doing it for their staff explain why they didn’t close early for every other sporting event including when we hosted the olympics? If your so concerned with the legitimacy of the ikea incident google it, the news reported it at the time but you clearly missed that along with the smashing the emergency service car, falling through the bus stop and climbing lamp post incidents. Large corporations rarely do anything to benefit their staff without benefiting the company at the same time. By closing early it’s saying “look we support England too please don’t trash us”. They could be genuine and wanting their staff to watch the game but if that’s the case I hope they do the same for the rugby...

@LivesToTravel found it! Not good but hardly trashed not even police involved!

Now answer why you think Aldi is closing one hour early to avoid the shops that would be closed at kick off being trashed? How would people wreck it during or after the game? I was directly talking about them giving one hour pre kick off!

I'm not touchy about football I'm touchy about miserable people spouting absolute shite!

By the way we're 1-0 up and it's still coming home!

Just wanted to reply to those who say the shops are closed early anyway on Sunday so staff wouldn't miss the match. I know at my Aldi store even though the store closes at 4pm we don't actually leave at 4pm. For some shifts the staff are their until 11pm or later (usually 6pm or 8pm though).

Just because it's Sunday trading hours ( in England) it doesn't mean that staff will leave at 4pm Confused

LivesToTravel · 11/07/2018 20:29

Haha I am not miserable about football at all but glad you know me from 1 opinion Grin I would say they are closing 1 hour early to avoid people coming in their shops singing the usual German bomber song over and over and over and over as they always do when there is football on and possibly trashing it. (I am aware it is the minority that do this but still Lidl and Aldi would be an obvious target) I merely voiced an opinion but you seem to have taken it personally. If your on the board of directors by all means correct me with your wisdom as to why you have given staff time off for football but not the olympics or rugby or Wimbledon....

jobjobjob · 11/07/2018 20:33

@LivesToTravel ok change of reason, I understand Hmm

No not on board of directors but when I see such ludicrous statements I just feel the need to try and stop the poster making such a fool of themselves!

Let’s just agree to disagree. Like I say if they give the time off for other sports we do well in then I will retract everything I said but until that day happens I find it very hard to believe they are doing it for the benefit of the staff.

On another note it’s 1-1 now Sad

totolouise · 11/07/2018 20:50

I received an email today from Petsathome to advise that they too will be closing an hour early on Sunday, so staff can watch the match. Fair play to them I say!

jobjobjob · 11/07/2018 20:54

@totolouise and @LivesToTravel are pets at home German too?Grin

@frasersmummy I though Andy Murray was Scottish and very clear about that?

OP posts:
jobjobjob · 11/07/2018 21:12

@frasersmummy sorry posted too soon! So that would've been for the Scottish Aldi to decide, not sure they did anything?

Not German no. They are owned by a huge European organisation now with offices across Europe. I seem to have made an impression Wink

CtrlCandCtrlV · 12/07/2018 07:37

AND for the tennis fans who want to watch Wimbledon!

NC172938 · 12/07/2018 08:04

@purplebunny2012

"I'm curious as to why people think the missing hour should be paid, unless you believe they should also pay an extra hour to those who don't work Sundays? Surely that would have to be fairest."

It's because people have had a long-standing expectation that the time was going to be worked.

Say Person A usually works 20 hours Mon - Wed, Person B usually works 20 hours Fri - Sun.

Person A works their full 20 hours this week, Person B isn't able to because the manager takes their Sunday hours off them. If Person B doesn't get paid then they will lose money at the last minute for something they didn't plan for and for which they can't control, but it doesn't matter for Person A because it wouldn't have affected them anyway.

Monty27 · 12/07/2018 08:24

Interesting how sport can lead to a heated political debate Confused

NC172938 · 12/07/2018 09:20

@Monty27

It's because for a while the World Cup could potentially have affected people's livelihoods for a day. For some minimum wage workers on precarious contracts, losing three or four otherwise expected hours on Sunday would have meant they struggled to do their weekly food shop.

If that wasn't the case (for whatever reason), then there would be no heated political debates. It would just be sport and all would be fine. But because it is the case for some, it's important to talk about it. I realise it makes me/others look like a fun sponge, but me looking daft is less important than the way employers treat their workers.

(For the record: I watched the match last night with my mates and enjoyed it, until England lost of course. First time watching football since 2006!)

Monty27 · 12/07/2018 09:37
