To applaud Aldi and Lidl

For closing stores early if England reach the World Cup on Sunday?

I think it's great to allow staff to be able to watch a great sorting event. They normally work very unsocial hours over back holidays etc.

None of us are going to really suffer if they close an hour early are we?

I hope that the other supermarkets follow suit.

If I wasn't a footie fan (I am), I'd be pissed off if colleagues were getting time off that I had to cover for. Same is it is assumed that people without children are happy to do Christmas shifts etc.
Boycott Aldi if they piss you off.
Good on them.

chrysalis7 · 10/07/2018 13:07

If they don't then the staff won't turn up.

There were 9 of the 21 staff at Aldi 'off sick' last Saturday, when England were playing in the quarter finals.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 13:08

@dementedpixie not on Sunday's are they open 24 hours! They don't close when they like at all!

Iwantacampervan · 10/07/2018 13:09

The Sports Direct near us closed an hour early (at 7pm not 8pm)when England were playing Belgium on a Thursday evening.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 13:10

@Iwantacampervan that's great!

dementedpixie · 10/07/2018 13:11

My local Aldi and Lidl are open until 8pm on a Sunday

CanineEnigma · 10/07/2018 13:11

Aldi in Scotland is open from 9am-8pm on Sundays Grin

RitaMIlls · 10/07/2018 13:12

mulberrymelody shopping centres are usually around 7pm, supermarkets are usually 10pm unless 24 hours then they’re open all night, pubs and restaurants are usually same opening hours as during the week so range from 10pm - 11.30pm.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 10/07/2018 13:12

Ds' factory has been doing it for all the england games. Those in shift can watch it in work on a big screen and those coming off shift can go home early to be in time to watch it.

Tomatoesrock · 10/07/2018 13:12

They are known to be great employers. Surely most jobs will let the staff off to watch it. Years ago when we were in the world Cup the whole office would shut down, the CEO's TV came out and we even had some beers.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 13:12

@dementedpixie so not 24 hours then? Are they not governed by the trading hours on Sunday rule then?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 10/07/2018 13:12

Some stores,in Scotland are open 24 hours including on a Sunday (I don't mean Aldi or Lidl)

Stargirl90 · 10/07/2018 13:13

If only tesco would follow suit- i'm working sunday night :(

DiegoMadonna · 10/07/2018 13:13

Presumably they expect significantly lower trading at that time, which makes it an easy decision to close and make your employees/the public think you're just a wonderful, generous company.

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:14

If the LAST semi final England were in had been on a Sunday, they wouldn't have HAD to let shop workers leave early, coz their was no mandatory Sunday working for retail staff then. Hmm

Good for them for doing this.... Smile

And let's face it, there are going to be no customers LOL!

Hope they are doing it for ALL stores throughout the UK though. Bit unfair if not...

Seasawride · 10/07/2018 13:15

Think it’s great

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:15

What shift are you on @Stargirl90 (on Sunday)

GabsAlot · 10/07/2018 13:16

stargirl will all be over by then -i cant see them all doing it but who knows

jarhead123 · 10/07/2018 13:17

I think it's really good of them

Thissameearth · 10/07/2018 13:20

I didn’t know about this yes I agree it’s a nice gesture.

Nb Iceland have removed palm oil from their own brand products. They still stock and presumably make money from other brands which have palm oil. Still a big improvement and to be applauded in my opinion (although full disclosure I don’t shop there despite the fact they do that Confused)

Poloshot · 10/07/2018 13:21

@mulberrymelody Scotland decided not to compete in the World Cup and withdrew after 1998. I assume they did anyway

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 13:28

And no one stops others celebrating other sporting events but as you may have noticed football has a big following.

a LOUD following, I don't agree that the following is any bigger than the Olympics were.

Let's face it, it will thankfully be over very soon!

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 10/07/2018 13:30

I can’t see it being out of the kindness of their hearts. It will be to avoid loosing money when the stores are deserted during the games.
They will save on lighting, heating/ air con etc. I would be interested to know if their staff are being paid for that hour.

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 13:30

If England win, it will NEVER be over!

And even if we don't even win the semi final tomorrow, the news about it and the euphoria over how well we did will go on for MONTHS!
