To applaud Aldi and Lidl

For closing stores early if England reach the World Cup on Sunday?

I think it's great to allow staff to be able to watch a great sorting event. They normally work very unsocial hours over back holidays etc.

None of us are going to really suffer if they close an hour early are we?

I hope that the other supermarkets follow suit.

Quite ironic considering that both Aldi and Lidl are German companies... (though we’re obviously talking about their UK subsidiaries).

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 10/07/2018 14:17

The shop will be empty, they’re only doing it to save paying wages.

Jengnr · 10/07/2018 14:18

It’s a really nice thing for them to do. Can’t believe anyone is criticising them for it tbh.

Just goes to show, some people will complain about anything.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/07/2018 14:21

I work in a shop.

So many people come in on a BH and say 'oh, isn't it a shame that you have to work Bank Holidays...?'

To which I point out that 'you are the one shopping.'

The complaints we have because we are shut for Christmas Day have to be heard to be believed. Don't we know how much money we could make? Yeah, and none of us have families we'd quite like to see....

Foreverlexicon · 10/07/2018 14:21

Meanwhile, we’re having annual leave cancelled and being pulled off rest days to come in because adults can’t control themselves over a game. Hurrah.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/07/2018 14:21

Sorry, I just got the rage there for a moment.

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2018 14:22

Well Lidl, Delhaize and Mediamarkt have confirmed they are closing early tomorrow night in Belgium and will do the same if they reach the world cup final.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 14:31

@Iamtryingtobenicehere do you know they're not paying for the hour? Or it's that just your cynical miserable assumption?

bookmum08 · 10/07/2018 14:39

Daft. Really daft. I worked in retail for years but missed many an event I would liked to have the chance to attend because I couldn't finish early or swap shifts or days off or whatever. I am very meh about football personally. It exists. It's there. I know lots of people love it but not everyone is that interested so it really is daft to change peoples working hours for football when so much of retail jobs are still terrible zero hour contracts, crap pay, poor conditions etc. If the owners of Aldi and Lidl had real concerns about making life nicer for their staff an hour off to watch a footy match really won't be at the top of most staff members list.

Unihorn · 10/07/2018 14:59

It's an hourly paid job, there's no way they're paying people still. I work in hospitality and we often send people home unpaid in hot weather/during big sports events when it's dead anyway.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 15:04

@Unihorn have you read @mermaidsandunicorns post? She's a former employer and thinks that they'll be reimbursed?

Gosh, there are some very stressy comments on this thread. I wonder if the Wimbledon and Tour de France fans get this het up about their sport?

TheTapir · 10/07/2018 15:12

for those saying that the shops will be empty or dead, I went to Tesco last weekend during the England match, and yes it was slightly quieter than usual on a Saturday but by no means empty. It was full of women, and the odd man, who'd obviously had the same idea.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/07/2018 15:14

Yes, let’s close the whole country down That’s the spirit 😀

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 15:15

@ThroughThickAndThin01 Aldi and lLidl closed for one hour is hardly closing the whole country down now is it? 😂

It's the ones that aren't interested that are getting all stressed and throwing hissy fits. MILLIONS of people ARE actually interested in the football and intend to enjoy it while it lasts.

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2018 15:17

Are people only allowed to like one sport now?

Comparing a yearly event to once every 4 years does kind of show how you pigeon hole people though.

TheHobbitMum · 10/07/2018 15:18

I work for aldi and they are actually decent to work for. For this who asked we don't work Christmas Day & Boxing day, close early on Christmas Eve and we are asked who wants to work News Years Day (I do as I want double time).

Those who mentioned palm oil, they use sustainable palm oil Confused www.aldi.co.uk/about-aldi/corporate-responsibility/resources-for-our-products/sustainable-palm-oil

I will be very glad to leave early Sunday if they get through Grin

Kool4katz · 10/07/2018 15:18

My local Lidl and Aldi open till 9pm on Sundays and 10pm every other night. They won't be closing early because I'm not in England, hurrah!

TheHobbitMum · 10/07/2018 15:19

I doubt very much we'll be paid for going home early (we'll of clocked out) but none of us in our store are worried about that

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 15:20

@TheHobbitMum that's fantastic to hear! C'mon England it's coming home!

Many of us are interested but don't believe that the world should stop because of a football match. Even if we do win, many of us couldn't care less about "where we were and why", and don't consider it a historic life-changing event. It's a football match.

PinkHeart5914 · 10/07/2018 15:42

I think it’s quite nice really and let’s be honest nobody is going to die if they can’t get there loaf of bread.

No maybe not every member of staff cares about football but I bet most have a partner, children or family they wouldn’t mind spending a couple of extra hours with

bunnibearchi · 10/07/2018 15:44

It's one hour early, just pr and we've all played into their books.

I'll be happy when Lidl is open until 7-8pm like in Scotland.

tiggyt · 10/07/2018 15:53

Mine and my partners business will be finishing 3 hours earlier to ensure us and our employees get to watch the match tomorrow. If we didn’t do this then at least 15 of our staff won’t turn up to work tomorrow morning, as they want to make sure they get to watch the match, and not get stuck in traffic etc. We do have a few employees who aren’t planning to watch the match, but majority of our workers do as well as myself and my partner. My employees are self employed, and won’t be paid for those hours that we aren’t open tomorrow, however we do have weekend work for those who were relying on them hours.
