To applaud Aldi and Lidl

For closing stores early if England reach the World Cup on Sunday?

I think it's great to allow staff to be able to watch a great sorting event. They normally work very unsocial hours over back holidays etc.

None of us are going to really suffer if they close an hour early are we?

I hope that the other supermarkets follow suit.

I'm taking my cats to the cattery on Sunday. I will be less than impressed if they closed early for 11over paid and under talented mermen child's kicking a bag of wind around.

NurseButtercup · 10/07/2018 16:16

I think it's very very sensible and I applaud them. If we get through there will be very little traffic on the roads and the store will be practically empty from about 2pm.

It's a win win - excellent morale booster for staff and a small saving ££ on overheads for closing early.

RunMummyRun68 · 10/07/2018 16:19

we brought our tv down onto shop floor from our canteen for the game and will do so again

was great for management and staff relations....also meant nobody called in 'sick'!

MsHopey · 10/07/2018 16:25

Currently On maternity leave from aldi. But you get rota'd into shifts, peoples shifts will finish at 3, so no one will be paid for the hour, and it will be compulsory because the store will be empty and closed. I do agree they know the store will be empty so it saves wages, they send people home early and unpaid a lot when the store is taking in as much money as expected. It's nice people are going home, but it's a business and it's all about the bottom line. But I'm sure most people will be more than happy to go home.
Scotland don't have any Sunday trading laws, I've seen it on posts on here in the past. They're aldi's are normally open till 10.

NurseButtercup · 10/07/2018 16:28

@jobjobjob

C'mon England it's coming home!

I hate and detest football, but even I've got caught up in the football excitement. Grin

Since before the first match a women I work with randomly comes over to me and bursts into the "it's coming home" song. My response up until Sunday was "no it's not, they're rubbish".

She's been making me laugh and showing me clips of supporters doing silly things. I had to talk her out of her plans to jump into the canal after tomorrow's match on the basis that she's "got her tetanus". LoL

It might be coming home!!

swanlife · 10/07/2018 16:31

It's a business decision. These places are dead during the World Cup England matches. It makes no sense to lay on staff when there'll be almost no customers there

baxterboi · 10/07/2018 16:33

I think it’s great and hope that other non essential businesses follow.

Lol, yeah, all that non-essential stuff like eating and drinking

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/07/2018 16:35

Our shop will be open and busy. Contrary to popular opnion, not everyone watches football, and many people will choose to come in then because they think it will be quiet.

:Like they all choose to come in at quarter to ten at night because they think it will be quiet then, but because everyone thinks this, we're often serving ten minutes after we should have closed.

People, you have all day to shop in...

NC172938 · 10/07/2018 16:44

@tiggyt

You do realise they’re not your employees if they’re self employed contractors, right?

Out of interest what would happen if one of them wanted the day off for the Wimbledon final? Would they be penalised and provided with less work than all the other contractors, or would they get the chance to make it up like the football fans will?

Louiselouie0890 · 10/07/2018 16:51

I dont care so I volunteered to cover. I would loose hours if they closed early. Its one of my days I work. I wouldn't be happy.

cheeseoverchocolate · 10/07/2018 16:54

Well I suppose they know there would barely be any customers at that time anyway.

SlartiAardvark · 10/07/2018 16:55

I'm not a footy fan, but even I'm starting to get a bit excited now! There do seem to be a lot of Grinches on MN though.

If England do it, in years to come people will talk about the "Summer of 2018" when the UK had Mediterranean weather & England won the World Cup.

When your grandkids say "where were you" would you rather say "Watching the match in the garden with a Pimms" or "In Lidl".....

tiggyt · 10/07/2018 16:56

@NC172938 half of the people who work for us are self employed and the other half are not. Sorry if I got confused with my wording.

If somebody was to want the day off for Wimbledon, then good on them, they get the day off. For the self employed workers, they will be the first person we ask if they want to work the weekend. Not going to penalise people who enjoy the tennis am I? Out of all our workers, the ones who will be affected by this early finish are the ones who have little to no interest in their job, regularly don’t turn up to work, and will do anything they possibly can to get home early. Highly doubt they will lose sleep over us finishing early. Also, our decision has no affect on customers.

CrispsAndDip · 10/07/2018 16:56

Letting them leave early to watch football?

Do they let them leave early to vote?

WhiteHartLane · 10/07/2018 17:03

I think staff who are down to work that day should be paid til 4 (or later) regardless. It is harsh for those who aren't bothered by the match.

I work in a small shop and I am working Sunday. If England make the final my Manager has agreed that I can leave at 3pm. I am mad about most football though so am happy to lose the last hours pay.

jobjobjob · 10/07/2018 17:05

@CrispsAndDip is voting contained to just two hours? Ours is from 7-10, so a very large span of hours? Not really a real
Comparison is it?

^Yawn. So I take it you don’t follow or play any sports. Watch tv dramas or films etc?

CrispsAndDip · 10/07/2018 17:14

@jobjobjob You never know!

NC172938 · 10/07/2018 17:14

@tiggyt

"For the self employed workers, they will be the first person we ask if they want to work the weekend."

But that's the thing though - you don't always know when there's something significant that one of your self employed people wants to watch/attend, because the ins and outs of leisure time is not always discussed in a workplace. (Especially when half the office bangs on about football and you feel like you can't talk about your thing)

If one of your self employed workers wants to watch the Scrabble world cup final but they haven't told you that they love Scrabble, you won't know to put them first in the queue for weekend work. Given that they're self employed, it's not guaranteed that they will ask for it because they will then lose money if they don't work. There is a possibility they will just suck it up.

If I was in that situation and I then was told by the boss that automatic, fixed time off IS in fact available but it's on a date and time of the employer's choosing, I would feel very resentful.

I just think it's a bit presumptive on the part of employers to announce that everybody has to go home on a certain day because of an event that only some people want to watch.

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2018 17:32

I just think it's a bit presumptive on the part of employers to announce that everybody has to go home on a certain day because of an event that only some people want to watch.

It is our national sport so the comparisons to Wimbledon or Scrabble are not really comparative, the fact it is only if England are in the final is like it or not a huge deal for the nation, it is more a calculated business decision based on saving overheads as they know keeping a shop open for an hour for very minimal footfall would give them some feel good points.

They and other large supermarkets have announced the same in Belgium and are also shutting early tomorrow night for the semi final, with no angst whatsoever.

tiggyt · 10/07/2018 17:33

@NC172938
I’m baffled. So you’re telling me that I should know all my staffs interests, and to know when a significant event surrounding one of their interest I should approach them to see if they want time off to watch/attend the event as they might be too embarrassed? How about no. I couldn’t give a toss about my staffs interests, and if they want time off because of their interest then sure no problem, I’ll put in the diary and make a note to see if they want weekend work.

My company has roughly 70 staff members, 4 of them, including myself are female. With so many male workers, a large quantity of them want to watch the match including the 4 female workers, and are grateful for our decision in finishing early. I’ve been running this company for 15 years now, and from previous experiences I know whether it’s a good idea to finish early, as a lot of people enjoy to watch England matches and would end up just not turning up to work.

Sirzy · 10/07/2018 17:33

Iceland have said it is shutting at two if we get to the final and all staff will be fully paid

Fluffyears · 10/07/2018 17:41

We’re shite due to our very small population up here so much less of a talent pool to choose from. Many players who are eligible to play for other national teams if they have mixed parentage tend to go for the non Scottish team so they can at least get a shot at Europe or thebworldbcipmagsin this decreases the number of talented players. We don’t care as we party on win or lose (we kind have to). I wish England well but if one more person says ‘it’s coming home’ I might punch them in the tit as it’s annoying now!

bunnibearchi · 10/07/2018 17:45

Gosh Scotland you sound bitter!

I don't give a fuck about any sport, I would just like to do my weekly shop on a Sunday evening

Sirzy · 10/07/2018 17:49

Oh and Iceland are including Scotland, Northern Ireland and wales
