Did I set a bad example for DD

Maybe an AIBU, maybe more WWUD?

Popped into a cheap shop today. Planning a day out tomorrow. Got 2 umbrellas, got 2 travel coffee cups, got 2 little lunch bags and a few other crafty things my DD7 picked. Went through the checkout, girl had packed everything into bags and total came to $23. Straight away I knew it was an under charge. The umbrellas were $12 each.
I paid and was checking the docket as we walked to the car. As I suspected she had only charged all the double items once.

I said to my DD "We got some stuff for free, she only charged us once for all the double items"
My DD said "You mean we accidentally stole things"
I said "No, we didn't steal anything, it was her mistake"

My rule is, if it's my mistake I'll fix it. If it's their mistake, I'll leave it.

Just got me thinking though - Did I set a bad example for my DD?

I wouldn't have owned up but I wouldn't have said anything to my child.

pointythings · 05/07/2018 17:03

Yes, you absolutely did. You should have gone back and pointed out the assistant's mistake and paid the correct price. This happened to me not long ago - it was only the cost of a bag of candy floss - but I bloody well made sure I paid what I owed.

BoldKitties · 05/07/2018 17:16

My rule is, if it's my mistake I'll fix it. If it's their mistake, I'll leave it.

Other posters have asked this, but I don't think you have answered, OP. Would this rule still apply if their mistake had been to overcharge you?

Bibesia · 05/07/2018 17:20

What do you mean by saying you are "trying to own it"? Are you going to go back to the shop and pay the difference?

cloudyweewee · 05/07/2018 17:22

That is disgraceful. If ever I'm undercharged in a shop, I always point it out just as i would point out an overcharge.

Lovemusic33 · 05/07/2018 17:22

I’m sorry but I don’t believe most people on here would have said anything to the cashier? I know I wouldn’t have, it’s happened quite a few times with me but often items have just scanned at a much lower price, I have never looked up and said “oh, that was meant to be £10 not £5”. Cashiers mistake, they should have been more careful whilst scanning things.

likeacrow · 05/07/2018 17:24

I'd have done the same. Most people I know would. But maybe not tell DD.

Fresta · 05/07/2018 17:25

If it's a small independent shop or business I always point out any mistakes. However, if it's a big store like Next or Tesco that have made tons of profit out of me I don't! They can shoulder the loss- it's their own fault!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/07/2018 17:25

So if they scanned something twice by mistake, would you not bother to point it out?

Pengggwn · 05/07/2018 17:28

Lovemusic33

I have frequently done so.

jarhead123 · 05/07/2018 17:31

YANBU I'd do the same

Mookie81 · 05/07/2018 17:38

Bollocks would most people say something, lots of people would keep quiet.
The stupid thing is telling your child.

Pengggwn · 05/07/2018 17:42

My rule is, if it's my mistake I'll fix it. If it's their mistake, I'll leave it.

But the police have a different rule.

likeacrow · 05/07/2018 17:42

@Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar

"So if they scanned something twice by mistake, would you not bother to point it out?"

Hell no. I'd be thinking, nice one, hope they don't notice. People on this thread are either talking shit or really are like no one I know IRL.

Obvs would say something if a charity shop/small independent business. Tesco/Iceland etc? Couldn't care less. The staff probably don't either! I certainly wouldn't have when I was a teenage cashier.

Get real folks.

Pengggwn · 05/07/2018 17:44

Get real folks.

This is real. I don't steal from shops.

likeacrow · 05/07/2018 17:44

But the police have a different rule.

Can guarantee the police absolutely would not waste paperwork on this and, shock horror, a copper probably wouldn't own up either.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 05/07/2018 17:44

likeacrow?? Hope they don't notice? I don't think you quite understand...

Pengggwn · 05/07/2018 17:45

Can guarantee the police absolutely would not waste paperwork on this and, shock horror, a copper probably wouldn't own up either.

Utterly irrelevant. It is against the law.

likeacrow · 05/07/2018 17:46

@Pengggwn Good for you. I sometimes say I haven't used any bags when... I actually HAVE! 😫 Mind blown?

Pengggwn · 05/07/2018 17:47

likeacrow

Why would the admission of a stranger on the internet they are guilty of (extremely) petty theft blow my mind? I just think 'what a scruff' and move on, to be honest.

December2018 · 05/07/2018 17:48

It's not like you went in and stuffed a load of stuff up your top and ran out without paying.... that would be a bad example
if I get undercharged I skip out the shop feeling very happy!
I don't think I would have paid £12 for a brolly to be honest!
I go to Poundland lol

likeacrow · 05/07/2018 17:49

@Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar. I misread your post. I would obviously point out them charging me twice because I give a shit about that and can't afford to pay twice. The MD of Tesco is going to be just fine if I don't point out being undercharged however.

Mummadeeze · 05/07/2018 17:49

I think it was bad and I would always tell someone in a shop or restaurant if they have undercharged me by accident. It is tempting not to but they might get in trouble for the tills not balancing and I know how grateful I would be if someone told me and I was in there shoes. I think it is sad that so many people try to get away with being dishonest if they have the opportunity.

likeacrow · 05/07/2018 17:50

@Pengggwn 😂

Arum51 · 05/07/2018 17:56

I have been undercharged or given too much change many times over the years. Never in my life have I failed to point it out, and pay the correct amount. I am not a thief. I dragged the kids back into shops when they were little if they'd picked some sweeties up without me noticing. If they found money on the floor in shops, I made them hand it in at customer services.

This whole "Oh, everybody does it..." attitude really annoys me. No, no we don't. There are an awful lot of people who are not thieves. Honestly, it's true, I swear.
