To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

Why must you be in a thuggish backwater, Newface? I was merely pointing out that football brings the thugs out, even in the naicest places. Though that's not why I find the World Cup boring. It was just an aside.

HollyGibney · 08/07/2018 19:16

Thuggish backwater far more likely to harbour disgusting football thuggery obvs; all those commoners! Just like earlier on with the repeated expression of surprise that we weren't all off "celebrating" the win because obviously us rough supporters would surely be off using it as an excuse to get hammered and anti social.

Such disgusting snobbery and most of them don't even realise Grin

Newface · 08/07/2018 19:21

Enjoy your exclusivity, as decreed by The Times 🙄

I’ll be enjoying the footy.

Onwhitehorses · 08/07/2018 19:24

I'm not in some thuggish backwater: this is one of the most desirable and expensive places in England, according to The Times

That did make me Grin Are you Margo?

TheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 19:24

Good-oh. I will be hiding from the thugs. Grin

MargoTheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 19:26

Onwhitehorses, No, I am definitely not. Grin

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 19:45

@HollyGibney

If that's aimed at me...
My surprise that you weren't out celebrating was related to the fact I kept being told I was jealous and bitter about something. Yet you were just doing what I was doing, dicking about on MN. So what is there to be jealous of?!

I've not once even alluded to any kind of yob/thug/rowdy behaviour or made any comment on the "type" of people who are into football. I've just passed comment on finding the game dull.

So perhaps you could not put words in my mouth or ascribe meaning where there isn't one. Thanks.

RoseWhiteTips · 08/07/2018 19:48

It’s coming home? By “It’s”do they mean the World Cup itself?

The slogan is not terribly impressive.

Newface · 08/07/2018 19:55

Given it was released for Euro 96, no it does not refer directly refer to the World Cup.

It refers to England hosting the tournament.

It now has a metaphorical meaning too - that we’re brining the World Cup trophy back to football’s spiritual home.

HollyGibney · 08/07/2018 19:58

I didn't say you were jealous and bitter. Others may have but I didn't.

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 20:00

HollyGibney

Regardless, that's what my comments about celebrating were in response to. I'm so far from being a snob.

egdehsdrawkcab · 08/07/2018 20:01

OP one of the few with you who kind of can't wait for it to end... I love the Olympics, I love Wimbledon, I just can't get on with football. Those in the profession, plus many of the super-fans leave me reeling. Few more days.....

HollyGibney · 08/07/2018 20:03

See, you definitely come across as though you are. Might be worth looking at that.

flapjackfairy · 08/07/2018 20:09

Op you must know sweet FA ( see what i did there ? .) about football if you think England are a mediocre tem.
Dont you feel a bit of a fool now they have made it to the semi final?

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 20:14

HollyGibney

You're being very unpleasant and very personal. I've not been. Might be worth looking at that.

MargoTheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 20:18

Quite apart from the boringness of football, "football's coming home" makes no grammatical sense at all. Which is arguably worse than anything else.

RainySeptember · 08/07/2018 20:25

Oh Margo this has already been addressed so very many times.

HollyGibney · 08/07/2018 20:38

You're being very unpleasant and very personal.

I don't actually think I am tbh. I think I have been pretty mild in comparison to many other posters (perhaps a re-read of my posts might help?). You on the other hand, I think have been extremely adversarial on this thread and clearly don't like being disagreed with or challenged on anything. However I feel very sure you'll robustly refute that opinion so I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree aren't we?

MargoTheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 20:39

Jolly good, Rainy.

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 20:41

HollyGibney

You've said I come across as a snob and I should look at that (despite me having said nothing that could reasonably be regarded as snobby). I've not made one personal comment towards you. So yeah, I fucking disagree.

moaningminnie123 · 08/07/2018 20:47

Can’t wait till it’s all over. I can’t stand the way you cannot get away from it at all, everybody goes so loopy about it and people who don’t know you very well just assume you care about it and so start talking to you about it, usually I will make small talk on any subject to be polite but i’m Afraid the mention of football sends me off on a rant.

I know that’s an unpopular opinion but to be frank I just don’t care!

Three Lions by Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds
Produced by Dave Bascombe, Simon Rogers & Ian Broudie

LYRICS

[Spoken Intro: Alan Hansen]
I think it's bad news for the English game
We're not creative enough, and we're not positive enough

[Refrain: Ian Broudie]
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home (We'll go on getting bad results)
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home

[Verse 1: Frank Skinner]
Everyone seems to know the score, they've seen it all before
They just know, they're so sure
That England's gonna throw it away, gonna blow it away
But I know they can play, 'cause I remember

[Chorus: All]
Three lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
Thirty years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

[Verse 2: David Baddiel]
So many jokes, so many sneers
But all those "Oh, so nears" wear you down through the years
But I still see that tackle by Moore and when Lineker scored
Bobby belting the ball, and Nobby dancing

[Chorus: All]
Three lions on a shirt
Jules Rimet still gleaming
Thirty years of hurt
Never stopped me dreaming

[Bridge]
England have done it, in the last minute of extra time!
What a save, Gordon Banks!
Good old England, England that couldn't play football!
England have got it in the bag!

I know that was then, but it could be again

[Refrain]
It's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home
(England have done it)
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home
It's coming home, it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home

[Chorus]
(It's coming home) Three lions on a shirt
(It's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming
(Football's coming home
It's coming home) Thirty years of hurt
(It's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming
(Football's coming home
It's coming home) Three lions on a shirt
(It's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming
(Football's coming home
It's coming home) Thirty years of hurt
(It's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming
(Football's coming home
It's coming home) Three lions on a shirt
(It's coming home, it's coming) Jules Rimet still gleaming
(Football's coming home
It's coming home) Thirty years of hurt
(It's coming home, it's coming) Never stopped me dreaming
(Football's coming home)

MargoTheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 21:05

Who TF is Jules Rimet? (Not to mention Nobby. Did I really just read that?)

Wondering why I am on this thread, so perhaps need to fuck off and get onto another thread about something interesting (like ironing).

AuntieStella · 08/07/2018 21:05

They're Coming Homey is beyond brilliant as a slogan this year.

OK, the full fate of the Wild Boars FC is still to be known, but I am cheering for the four who are out and coming home, and - like posters on many a laddish website - it's a rallying cry for the prayers (for this evening that do) and the hopes (form those who don't) for all the rest of the boys and their coach.

GlacindaTheTroll · 08/07/2018 21:11

Margo

Jules Rimet is explained on this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3298793-To-have-misheard-this-football-reference-for-so-long

And yes, all fingers firmly crossed for the all the Thai footballers coming home. Definitely an extra resonance this year.
