To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

autumn57565 · 04/07/2018 19:47

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

MargoTheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 22:26

Thank you. Jewels remain... That's what I had remembered from yonks ago.

Glad I didn't call my DS Norbert. Grin

strawberrisc · 09/07/2018 06:33

AlecT - I prefer the ‘98 version with Psycho screaming!

Shockers · 09/07/2018 06:50

It’s funny how the name Norbert/Nobby didn’t catch on after the ‘66 World Cup.

Mousetolioness · 09/07/2018 08:05

I'm not a huge football fan but when I look at the shitfest chaos happening around the now 'soft' Brexit fiasco I'm heartened by anything positive at the moment.

I don't know whether 'It's coming home' re the football but Messrs Southgate & England are a welcome relief on the home news front, as is the story so far on the heroic rescue attempt of the boys and their coach trapped in a cave system.

The chickens may be coming home to roost re Brexit, Russia/Putin may be happy to crap wherever they please, but a man in a waistcoat who bears a startling resemblance in both looks and honest decency to my nephew is the good news today. So yes OP, YABU to even raise the quibble!

SleightOfMind · 10/07/2018 13:19

Levels of domestic violence go through the roof during big football matches. Whether the home team win or lose.

Years ago I read a study claiming that the worst matches for DM were those with lots of end to end play, not many goals, ending in a draw.
Apparently fans’ levels of frustration are such that they need to kick ten bells out of their wives and children.

They suggested pitches be made shorter and goals wider to literally save lives but the football industry shouted this down as heresy.

SaucyJack · 10/07/2018 13:35

You can't blame male violence on the width of football goals.

Nasty, sadistic men can find any old excuse to give their wife a smack should they so desire.

I honestly had an ex threaten to stab me on Christmas Day one year because he decided that me wanting to watch the Xmas TOTP was an insult to the recently-dead Joe Strummer (!) There's no method in the madness.

Violent men are the reason for male violence.

SleightOfMind · 10/07/2018 13:51

I completely agree Saucy, it’s more the attitude of the footballing establishment I was disgusted by.

Itscominghomeyesitis · 10/07/2018 16:29

DV increases amongst already domestic violent men. Same as at Christmas or during pregnancy.

It's male violence that is the problem, not the football.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/07/2018 18:16

Anyway @autumn57565 , you know it's coming home right? Wink

Nogymjustcake · 10/07/2018 18:19

Who cares, we are in such a negative time at the moment ... let them have fun and even enjoy it

WrongOnTheInternet · 11/07/2018 20:38

Who cares, let them enjoy beating up their wives and children?? I'm not sure that you really wanted to say that just there...

If you absolutely insist in concentrating on the 'first cause' rather than the obvious football correlation, what is it that turns men to violence in certain situations? Is it purely men= violence? Is it purely certain types of men= violence? Or is it the combination of men and hivemind, perhaps with added over-excitement = violence? The latter might be a common point with the way women suffer in war, whoever wins: and if that is the crucial factor, then we should all be resisting this hivemind capability an awful lot more.

Battleax · 11/07/2018 20:44

Wow.

What’s wrong with you @nogymjustcake ?

likeacrow · 11/07/2018 21:39

Looks like it didn't come home then...

mathanxiety · 11/07/2018 22:01

So England and Belgium to battle it out on Saturday.

HollyGibney · 11/07/2018 22:11

No but they did their best and had so many chances that didn't quite make it and they didn't resort to dirty, violent play like Croatia did. I think they were great and they played their hearts out, but you'll always get the smarmy cheap shot comments after though, its to be expected.

RoseWhiteTips · 11/07/2018 22:13

Dirty violent play? Huh?
Were we watching the same match?🙄

Slartybartfast · 11/07/2018 22:17

At one pint Croatia had 14 fouls compared to England 7

RoseWhiteTips · 11/07/2018 22:18

Poor losers.

Was it not the England goalie who went in studs up, knee high?
Shoulda been a red card.

HollyGibney · 11/07/2018 22:21

I'm sure we were RWT. Maybe you just don't know much about what you were watching. The match analysis bears the amount of fouls out. What exactly has been said that indicates poor losers. I think they played brilliantly and took a bashing, it's an observation not a lament.

JacquesHammer · 11/07/2018 22:24

@RoseWhiteTips

No, just someone who by qualification is taught to (a) examine a game and (b) by deign of the officiating course I did know a decent amount about the rules.
