To be sick of this 'it's coming home' nonsense

It's not coming home. Who ever said England is home? It makes us look idiotic to the rest of the world. Someone on the radio said they really believe England is going to win this year. The rest of the world must be pissing themselves looking at England cheering over such a mediocre team and having such delusions of grandeur.

It also seems to make people behave like hooligans. I've seen some crazy driving before the matches start, and people were making noise until the early hours last night.

It's just a game! We never get this excited about the olympics, Wimbledon or even Rugby.

Ah well, you're going to have to put up with it for at least another 3 days, OP, and maybe more.

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 12:27

When does "unity" and feelgood become enforced conformism?
Such a good point.

It's interesting to note that I've not personally attacked any so-called football fans, I've just said I find the sport itself dull and irrelevant and don't feel the need to join in, yet I've been called nasty, mean spirited, uptight, boring, miserable... I could go on. I wonder why some people feel so threatened by the fact that others don't enjoy what they do that they feel the need to shout them down so aggressively?

Jorah · 08/07/2018 12:27

With the greatest respect to hockey players, only about 200 people in the entire country give a toss about it

That made me do a proper lol.

(disclaimer I do like hockey!)

Jorah · 08/07/2018 12:28

@MikeIngdom that's exactly right

wendiwoowho · 08/07/2018 12:34

While there's no doubt alcohol is a contributing factor, you would assume this isn't the only time these people are out and there's not that much damaged getting caused every other weekend.

There is absolutely no coincidence it happens when the football is on.

The England fans have actually been praised this tournament - there would be no need to praise them if it wasn't an issue - but even at that they are still up to their usually antics. (see picture)

This can also be used to show the Scottish, Welsh and NI discontent, branding the English fans as UK 🙄

HollyGibney · 08/07/2018 12:57

You clearly don’t understand it Holly

No I just don't agree with you. You do see the difference don't you?

Seasawride · 08/07/2018 12:59

It’s coming homeits coming home though

Jorah · 08/07/2018 13:10

It absolutely is mean spirited to try and spoil this wonderful sporting achievement. To pretend you are doing it from a moral high ground is even worse!

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 13:30

Trying to spoil it? How about just not clicking on the thread. I've not clicked onto any pro-football or sport-related threads because I'm not interested. Non fans are perfectly entitled to have a place to moan if they want. If you come and get involved knowing the thread is "anti" football you're clearly intentionally looking to take offence. Pointless.

user1471596238 · 08/07/2018 13:31

The debate is never going to get anywhere. One is either enjoying the tournament or one is looking forward to it being finished. Yes, there is violence associated with football and blokes (because let's face it, males are overwhelmingly part of that world) who run about beating each other up or vandalising pubs, shops, trains, buses etc. are scum. Football however is not something that is lost to hooliganism even if it looked like it was going to be back in the 70s up to the late 80s. The majority of football fans are law abiding and just out to enjoy the tournament. Personally, I am not nationalistic and cringe at the tabloid idea of what it means to be patriotic but I am enjoying the rare break from the bickering over brexit and the positive mood that I am picking up on in my community. That's not to say that everyone is enjoying it or to dilute the issue of domestic violence or violence in general, which is unfortunately an experience that is only too real for a lot of people.

RainySeptember · 08/07/2018 13:58

Ilikeacrow, tbf if you reread the op it's a load of rubbish about the Three Lions song, the world pissing themselves at us, our mediocre team. It wasn't a 'phew I'll be glad when it's over' it was indeed a mean-spirited and factually incorrect post that anyone, fan or not, would feel compelled to address.

HollyGibney · 08/07/2018 14:25

you come and get involved knowing the thread is "anti" football you're clearly intentionally looking to take offence. Pointless.

Replace "football" for anything else and that could apply to pretty much every thread in AIBU.

likeacrow · 08/07/2018 14:53

@HollyGibney
The last aibu I commented on was about annoying stuff your toddler had done that day. It wasn't about taking offence at someone else's preferences or dislikes. It was just fun.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/07/2018 15:20

I agree @RainySeptember the op was mean spirited and goady. And based on absolutely no knowledge of the subject.

I don't like crafts. Or baking. Or soaps. Or rugby. Or heavy metal. Or coconut. Or x men. Or opera. Or jazz. Or loads of other stuff that people love. I don't start threads saying "all people who like knitting are self absorbed twats" or "all heavy metal fans are mindless meat heads" or "all rugby fans are public school chinless wonders". Because that would make me a twat. But apparently it's ok to slag off certain (working class?) stuff without redress. And stereotype those that like it with impunity.

It makes me eyes roll out of my head.

FWIW I love football. I've been going to matches for more than 30 years. I am also a middle aged woman who runs her own business, likes a decent glass of red, listens to archers, has a propensity for shoes, has two teenage daughters and an unhealthy obsession with Bryan ferry. Just like most footie fans, I've not a wife-beating yob with tattoos and a lager problem.

Jorah · 08/07/2018 15:35

bitoutofpractice you sound like my kind of woman!

BitOutOfPractice · 08/07/2018 15:43

jorah let's meet in the pub on Wednesday and put the world to rights! Smile

Jorah · 08/07/2018 16:16

Done

Onwhitehorses · 08/07/2018 16:52

Could I join you for a glass of something as a supporter of many years? I've been closely involved with a FL club and seen all the fantastic community work that goes on to reduce domestic violence, to support people's mental health, to improve reading, to address racism, to tackle obesity, to improve social inclusion and to offer some fantastic apprenticeship opportunities. Actually, the list could be many paragraphs longer but thought I'd pick out a few highlights. The sneery OP really is quite depressing.

RainySeptember · 08/07/2018 17:18

That's a nice positive message onwhitehorses, I'm not a fan really and don't know the first thing about football (except I'm loving this World Cup), but it's good to know that there's work going on in the community to address social issues.

Jorah · 08/07/2018 18:10

Tbh, the OP sounds ridiculous after England's performance yesterday.

GameOfMinges · 08/07/2018 18:14

It sounded ridiculous before England's entirely predictable performance yesterday, but yeah.

It’s coming home.

TheFormerMrsPugwash · 08/07/2018 19:08

Vandalism, GBH, and numerous arrests where I live (and I'm not in some thuggish backwater: this is one of the most desirable and expensive places in England, according to The Times). All in the name of "it's coming home". Hmm

Newface · 08/07/2018 19:09

Guess it must be me in the “thuggish backwater” 😂 Get a grip.
