AIBU to feel upset (and a little bit shit) at being told I’m “dangerously overweight”

Today I’ve been told I’m at risk of obesity and I’m “really quite overweight” and “dangerously overweight” and I’m absolutely gutted.
I’ve had a hideous year and I know I have put on weight but the mentions of “dangerously overweight” and “obesity” have really shaken me up.
I’m 10st 12 and a size 10 (occasionally an 8 in generous shops like Gap and Next) from 9st 6 with similar sized clothes but leaning more to an 8, this time last year ( this was pre pregnancy and tbh I was trying to get down to 9), . but over the last year I’ve carried a pregnancy to almost 20w, become quite unwell and lost said pregnancy, been depressed as a result of aforementioned loss, moved house (quite a significant move), has an awful arthritis episode that was prolonged And therefore stopped me excersising and started a new full time teaching role that has had me on my knees.
I’ve recently re joined the gym am eating much much better and have lost 3LBs so was feeling quite good.

I’m not sure what I wanted from this post but i just wanted a handhold because it all really shook me up and whilst I knew I was much plumper than before I didn’t really get the magnitude of my weight gain.
I don’t need flaming or anything but I just was so shocked and confused because I didn’t think you could be so dangerously overweight at a 8/10/12 and wondered if any of the MN massive could cheer me up or share their weight loss stories!

Thanks

Believe me you want to be in the slightly overweight range when any of he above land you in critical care .
Offset by the fact that those who are not overweight are less likely to end up in critical care

I'll stay slim and healthy and stay away from hospitals thank you

Nothing to do with nursing or medical care. Failure to offer wholesome, delicious food that ill people want to eat, and that will power recovery. But that really would cost.

CSIblonde · 03/07/2018 22:03

5ft 5 & size 10 sounds fine. Have u checked online BMI charts? She could be wrong . My previous Dr was obsessed with weight: when I was size 12 & 1O stone 7. I'm 5ft 10. After being pressured into being weighed during 2 appts made for my usual anti d's and ( which have never made me gain weight) I just ask for other Dr there, who never asks!
I'd lost 1.5stone over a year before she started there by cutting endless snacking on cake & biscuits. I hate exercise so the snacks had to go. I drink once in blue moon which prob helps - according to friends who like a social tipple.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 22:04

These people can’t eat often OCsock so end up on TPN often hence the problem .

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 22:04

My bmi is currently around 28 at 29 weeks pregnant. You do tend to put on more weight than just the weight of the baby.

Iceweasel · 03/07/2018 22:07

GreenCoffee It's not just a baby, there's the placenta, amniotic fluid, the increased size of the uterus, increased blood volume...

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 22:08

ichifanny
So you went from 23.3 BMI to 30 BMI in 30 weeks which is 140-179lbs which 40lbs so a 1.3lbs a week which is 4550 extra calories a week.

You lost muscle that weighs more than fat once you stopped working out hence the higher BMI for Athletes so you really gained more than 1.3lbs a week which is not the normal baby weight gain.

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 22:10

Grandmaswagsbag
There will be a a few lbs water but not 40lbs of water and placenta

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 22:11

It’s not extra calories at all educate yourself a bit on what pregnancy weight gain constitutes , 3 stones is fairly average . And do fuck off while you are at it .

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 03/07/2018 22:11

@greencoffee

Calories Confused? It’s a human being in there, plus placenta, blood, fluid etc. It’s not calories per lb like gaining fat.

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 22:12

4550 extra calories a week.

Thanks greencoffee for that breakdown. Brill. I’ve managed to consume THAT many extra calories per week, mostly in magnums. I’m pretty proud of myself actually.

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 22:15

Not worried. I gained over 3 stone in my 1st pregnancy and I was back to normal within 3 months. With my healthy bmi. You’re programmed to lay down extra fat reserves in pregnancy for breastfeeding afterwards too you know.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/07/2018 22:15

I don’t get all these different weights, dress sizes and BMI. From what everyone is posting there seems to be no correlation whatsoever.

I am 5 ft 6 and weight 9 st 6. Size 12 usually. So I have no idea at all how someone who is the same height but much heavier than me can be a dress size smaller.

How can that be?

Is it boob size?! Grin I have 2 fried eggs instead of melons.

Wonder how much a big boob weighs...

OCSock · 03/07/2018 22:18

I only tracked one pregnancy closely, my own. I gained 29lbs total, in 41 weeks, and had an 8lb baby. Which was, so I was told, pretty close to textbook. For an elderly primagravida at any rate.

Timefortea99 · 03/07/2018 22:18

I am 10stone 9,5 foot 2, size 12. Fit me up for a coffin now.

And yet I look okay. I am fit, walk at least 5 miles a day. Love a hill. Eat healthily.

Ignore who ever told you that.

noeffingidea · 03/07/2018 22:18

Hi OP Smile
If you want a sucessful weight loss story, I've lost over 3 stone over the last 18 months or so, got another stone or so to go.I'm an inch shorter than you and 11 stone at the moment. I've just done it through sensible eating and a fair amount of exercise. I'm a big believer in exercising, love feeling fit and healthy. I know my weight loss will seem slow to a lot of people, to be honest I haven't been even trying most of the time, just getting on with living really.
Best of luck to you, you can do it. Just remember your mental and physical well being is the most important thing.

OCSock · 03/07/2018 22:20

Boobs weigh lots, or mine do! Always fairly ample.

www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/pregnancy-week-by-week/in-depth/pregnancy-weight-gain/art-20044360?pg=2

*In the first trimester, most women don't need to gain much weight — which is good news if you're struggling with morning sickness.

If you start out at a healthy or normal weight, you need to gain only about 1 to 4 pounds (0.5 to 1.8 kilograms) in the first few months of pregnancy. You can do this by eating a healthy diet — no extra calories are necessary.

Steady weight gain is more important in the second and third trimesters — especially if you start out at a healthy weight or you're underweight. According to the guidelines, you'll gain about 1 pound (0.5 kilogram) a week until delivery. An extra 300 calories a day — half a sandwich and a glass of skim milk — might be enough to help you meet this goal. For overweight and obese women, the guidelines translate to a weight gain of about 1/2 pound (0.2 kilogram) a week in the second and third trimesters. Try adding a glass of low-fat milk or an ounce of cheese and a serving of fresh fruit to your diet.*

You are in the overweight cat so should have being doing the 1/2 and in the second and third, you added it all in the first this is not baby weight

Normal weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9) 25 to 35 lbs. (about 11 to 16 kg)
Overweight (BMI 25 to 29.9) 15 to 25 lbs. (about 7 to 11 kg)*

At the end of the 42 weeks you should have added around 25 lbs as you went into the Overwight BMI but most of that weight comes after week 28 so you have added way more then the goal already and you are just entering the part of pregnancy where you gain the most weight.

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 22:23

OCSock

That pretty much exactly by what is expected.

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 22:23

@GreenCoffee thanks I consider it one of my great achievements.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 22:23

Oh here comes the expert Hmm how much did you gain in pregnancy Green coffee ?

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 03/07/2018 22:25

It’s quite variable from woman to woman @greencoffee. That’s why the nhs doesn’t generally tell pregnant women how much / little to gain. It isn’t considered especially helpful or accurate. And based on your previous ignorant posts and tbh the slightly weird obsession you seem to have with making a pregnant mother on here feel as if she’s gained too much weight, I’ll take whatever you say with an enormous pinch of salt. You sound like a not terribly nice individual if I’m honest and you’ve really got a bee in your bonnet about proving a pregnant woman is too fat. That’s seriously fucked up. Hope you get some help with that.

noeffingidea · 03/07/2018 22:26

Curlyhairedassasin it's partly different body shapes and fat distribution, but it's also partly down to different shops and even styles of clothes.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 22:26

Absolutely bizarre individual . ( goes back to drinking milkshake )
