AIBU to feel upset (and a little bit shit) at being told I’m “dangerously overweight”

Mightymelon · 03/07/2018 18:44

Today I’ve been told I’m at risk of obesity and I’m “really quite overweight” and “dangerously overweight” and I’m absolutely gutted.
I’ve had a hideous year and I know I have put on weight but the mentions of “dangerously overweight” and “obesity” have really shaken me up.
I’m 10st 12 and a size 10 (occasionally an 8 in generous shops like Gap and Next) from 9st 6 with similar sized clothes but leaning more to an 8, this time last year ( this was pre pregnancy and tbh I was trying to get down to 9), . but over the last year I’ve carried a pregnancy to almost 20w, become quite unwell and lost said pregnancy, been depressed as a result of aforementioned loss, moved house (quite a significant move), has an awful arthritis episode that was prolonged And therefore stopped me excersising and started a new full time teaching role that has had me on my knees.
I’ve recently re joined the gym am eating much much better and have lost 3LBs so was feeling quite good.

I’m not sure what I wanted from this post but i just wanted a handhold because it all really shook me up and whilst I knew I was much plumper than before I didn’t really get the magnitude of my weight gain.
I don’t need flaming or anything but I just was so shocked and confused because I didn’t think you could be so dangerously overweight at a 8/10/12 and wondered if any of the MN massive could cheer me up or share their weight loss stories!

Thanks

What do you want to hear OP? "Sure, carry on eating pies"
Helpful ethyl. OP is barely overweight and already losing weight.
The overweight category, Green Is not subdivided. In fact, as I’ve said, research suggests it’s the healthiest place to be. Link

cardibach · 03/07/2018 20:36

Talkin I call bullshit. Nobody at that weight needs ‘major surgery’ whatever their happy weight is.

Raisinshoes · 03/07/2018 20:39

I went from 6 1/2 to 15 stone in a year due to prescribed steroids. I had actually been sent to a dietitian to gain weight urgently. I managed to get down to around 12 stone, but have hovered at that weight for years.

I see a specialist twice a year who was horrified when I told him that I planned to drop further weight to bring my bmi down. As in his words ‘you are currently one of my healthiest patients, and that extra weight could save your life if you become ill again.’ (Crohn’s)

Last time I was at the doctors surgery to have bloods done, the practice nurse kept going on every couple of minutes about losing weight, and I just smiled and nodded. (eyeroll)

Island35 · 03/07/2018 20:40

Hi OP

Sounds like a nurse with a mental flow chart of things she needs to say. I've recently had this with a midwife as I am 1 point over BMI to be midwife led. The only time I have been upset is when I see a certain midwife, specialist has a totally different outlook.

Teaching and winding up to the end of the academic year is a killer. I hope you have scheduled some much needed 'me time' in the holidays.

If you've lost a bit of weight already then you know how to lose weight, sounds like an exhausting year, I really am very sorry for your loss.

DuchyDuke · 03/07/2018 20:45

I know a woman who’s 5 ft 1 and your weight and only fits into certain size 12s at Monsoon. In most other high st shops she can’t even get into a 16. So we need to know your height really

Mightymelon · 03/07/2018 20:46

@ethylred are you deliberately trying to fucking goad.

I had a shit time
Got a bit chubby
Made a plan with other medical professionals (physio and consultant psychiatrist) to get myself sorted and to follow a plan set by them.
I begin following said plan and lose 3 lbs in a fortnight
I attend routine nurse apt feeling positive and with direction
I leave feeling defeated

I write a post on mumsnet ASKING FOR POSITIVE WEIGHT LOSS STORIES.

of course I don’t want people to tell me to keep on eating fucking pies.

Jesus Christ help me. 🙏

I’m well aware I’ve put on weight. I’m not blind I’m not stupid -
I was feeling a bit sad. But I really just wanted to know if any other MNs had positive experiences of 2 stone weight loss.

Cheers for your 2 pence though.

She posted it earlier duchy.

Elementtree · 03/07/2018 20:46

Op said she was 5ft5 up thread.

Hidillyho · 03/07/2018 20:47

As someone who suffers with bad arthritis just make sure you do watch your weight. I used to go the the gym daily until I got this shitty disease and was similar dress size to you. Now I’m a bloody whale and I’m so much pain I can barely move off the toilet without help.

Out of interest, what medication are you discussing with the nurse?

Elementtree · 03/07/2018 20:49

Don't let the fuckers get you down Mighty. You know what you are doing, you have a plan. Flowers

missymousey · 03/07/2018 20:53

Flowers sorry for your loss OP. What a year you've had - I'm sorry they have kicked you when you were down.

Well done for starting to get on top of things again with eating better and re-joining the gym. You sound like a very strong woman and you will get through this.

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 20:55

Hidillyho
Weight is mostly diet not exercise, not sure you might be down because your not as active so are eating all the pies. But if you count calories you can lose weight without does exercise.

cardibach · 03/07/2018 20:55

Duchy I don’t believe this: only fits into certain size 12s at Monsoon. In most other high st shops she can’t even get into a 16
Monsoon sizing is about in line with other stores. Certainly not 2 whole sizes adrift!
Why are people talking so much shit about size and weight when the OP wanted support?
I lost 3 stone a few years ago by eating healthily and considering portion size (but no calorie counting), Walking at least a mile, usually two, every day (sod 10k steps - it’s the sustained walk8ng that does it, whatever the step count) and doing weight/resistance training ince a week. It’s very doable. I need to do it again now as I injured my knee and stopped walking and everything went to hell in a hand cart.

OCSock · 03/07/2018 20:55

Seriously, I think most of you are in denial that you are overweight. I think I am plump, at 62, at a 10/12 dress size and 9st 4lb and 5'5". Fat has been normalised in a fashion that is dangerously harmful to health. I know loads of cardiologists and they are as thin as racing snakes. The older we get, the thinner we need to be, for health reasons. Obesity is a bigger contributor to cancer than smoking now so many have given up. In fact, I have only seen one fit NHS professional in 15 years, so I really wouldn't take most doctors and fewer nurses' opinions seriously. Healthy critters are lean.

Grabs tin hat and disappears to air raid shelter.

DiddimusStench · 03/07/2018 20:56

Well... if you’re dangerously obese then I am a whale.

DuchyDuke · 03/07/2018 20:57

Monsoon is huge compared to Warehouse or Mango or Zara or H&M. Some 12s are like 16s! I’m a proper 12/14 and even I have to get an 8 in some styles.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 20:59

What a load of bollocks OCsock I work in critical care and skinny rake like people with no reserves are the first to fall when the body suffers serious illness like sepsis or infection .

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 21:01

ichifanny
Ah more HAES bullshit stuff, not sure you weightlifting BMI is true now as you have being posting a lot of HAES fatlogic.

marymoosmum · 03/07/2018 21:02

Well you have ruined my night. I'm 13 stone and a size 16. I am currently trying to loose weight, although had a lot of stress recently and have just sat and gobbled a load of chocolate. I have lost a stone size February and 4 inches off my waist.
It makes me feel shitty when I hear people that are at the weight I want to get too are obese, there is no hope for me at all.
Just keep going and ignore, if you take it to heart you will set yourself back.
I am now going to go and try to take my own advice.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 21:03

No actual real life experience of critically ill patients who waste away in front of your eyes because they don’t have any reserves whatsoever , slightly overweight people have better odds when the shit hits the fan ad that FACT .

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 21:04

Don’t forget that skinny people can have lots of visceral fat. Focusing on a healthy lifestyle and diet is far more important than weight and size.

Rattysparklebum · 03/07/2018 21:05

I’ve got really skinny arms and legs OP, small bust bmi 25, size 12, thought I could lose a few pounds but felt healthy until I stood on these fancy scales at a health review, I carry all my fat just around my middle and this machine measured my %body fat in this area in the obese category whereas if the fat had been more evenly distributed it would not have been a concern, it was a shock but encouraged me to eat a bit healthier and I’ve lost over half a stone with no effort at all.

mmmgoats · 03/07/2018 21:06

@marymoosmum well done on loosing the stone! Comparison is the thief of joy, so take your joy in YOUR achievements and don't give a flying feck about what others are up to. You've already made an amazing start - it's not easy!

User467 · 03/07/2018 21:06

OP BMI is toir weight in kg divided by your height in m2. Your BMI is 25 and not overweight. Your nurse has looked at her chart incorrectly and given her unqualified advice based on an error, not based on what she saw in front of her. You need to forget what she said and don't let her work out your BMI again

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 21:09

ichifanny
Slightly overweight so 25-26 BMI so not the obese people, what reserves are you talking about fat? As at 29 BMI from lifting weight you must be all musle near Schwarzenegger levels as you have pretty much the same BMI's so would have a way lower BF% than even a average 25 BMI person.
