AIBU to feel upset (and a little bit shit) at being told I’m “dangerously overweight”

Today I’ve been told I’m at risk of obesity and I’m “really quite overweight” and “dangerously overweight” and I’m absolutely gutted.
I’ve had a hideous year and I know I have put on weight but the mentions of “dangerously overweight” and “obesity” have really shaken me up.
I’m 10st 12 and a size 10 (occasionally an 8 in generous shops like Gap and Next) from 9st 6 with similar sized clothes but leaning more to an 8, this time last year ( this was pre pregnancy and tbh I was trying to get down to 9), . but over the last year I’ve carried a pregnancy to almost 20w, become quite unwell and lost said pregnancy, been depressed as a result of aforementioned loss, moved house (quite a significant move), has an awful arthritis episode that was prolonged And therefore stopped me excersising and started a new full time teaching role that has had me on my knees.
I’ve recently re joined the gym am eating much much better and have lost 3LBs so was feeling quite good.

I’m not sure what I wanted from this post but i just wanted a handhold because it all really shook me up and whilst I knew I was much plumper than before I didn’t really get the magnitude of my weight gain.
I don’t need flaming or anything but I just was so shocked and confused because I didn’t think you could be so dangerously overweight at a 8/10/12 and wondered if any of the MN massive could cheer me up or share their weight loss stories!

Thanks

That sounds like utter nonsense TalkinPeace. There are no scales for different "frames". Are you suggesting people have vastly different skeletons and so vastly different "happy weights" . Either you have the complete wrong end of the stick or your surgeon had been telling you crap. Did you pay for this scan by any chance? And what major surgery did you nearly have to have?

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 21:13

Rattysparklebum
Those scales are not accurate for BF% and in no way can tell you where the fat is located. Get a dexa scan or a caliper measerment at your gym.

The BF% from those scales are really only to be used to track a trend over time but you should get a real measerment done.

Hidillyho · 03/07/2018 21:13

GreenCoffee oh I know but I got myself in a rut of depression. I eat when I’m bored and used to just go to the gym when I was board. I know it’s down to my diet but not being able to move doesn’t help. I didn’t want it to come across as a woe about me post, just to tell the OP that she’s better watching it now and keeping it in check than being the size of me a few years down the line

cardibach · 03/07/2018 21:13

Green have you read my link earlier?
‘Healthy’ BMI is not what you think, or what the medical establishment will tell you if you look at research and if you define ’healthy’ as good long term prognosis.

Chattymummyhere · 03/07/2018 21:18

If you have arthritis then being borderline overweight will have a huge impact. I went to the doctor because of knee norm long after giving birth. His answer was it was because I had gain a lot of weight what did I expect behind now overweight (2lbs over). It was very depressing to hear as a 17year old who had given birth 8weeks prior who’s knee hurt so much I cried when I moved. However blunt he was though he was right, my weight had a huge impact on my already bad knees enough though I was only just overweight it was dangerous for me. I’ve lost over two stone since my first pregnancy and having more children since and although I still feel overweight ( “mummy tummy”) I’m actually a healthy bmi and my knees don’t flare up anymore part from when it’s really cold.

DuchyDuke · 03/07/2018 21:21

Healthy bmi isn’t 25 it’s in the middle of the healthy bmi range. A person with a bmi of 25 is borderline overweight and probably is on the days their weights fluctuate up.

tootiredtospeak · 03/07/2018 21:24

Ah shit I am 10st 12 and 5 foot 3 and a size 12. Thought that was pretty ok!!!

PlainPiglet · 03/07/2018 21:26

The healthy weight range for your height is between 7 stone 13 pounds and 10 stone 11 pounds which means you are currently 1 pound in the "overweight" category and have a BMI of 25.2. Nurse was going through the motions instead of using their eyes and common sense to realise she had got calculation wrong.

Good luck with your new eating and exercise regime .

yogaginrepeat · 03/07/2018 21:28

OP you're definitely not morbidly obese but I am confused about your dress sizing - I weigh two stone less, am same height but am an 8/10 too in the shops you mention?

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 03/07/2018 21:28

That’s not what the bmi range means @duchy. Not that I’m at the higher end myself just now or anything... ahem.

But it’s a healthy range. Your healthy weight will be different depending on lots of different factors, like your body shape, fat percentage etc. It’s not just “the middle is healthy. Either side is less healthy”.

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/lifestyle/what-is-the-body-mass-index-bmi/

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 03/07/2018 21:29

But in my case, I definitely should be somewhere near the middle. Or maybe even the low end. I’m happier there at least.

TalkinPeace · 03/07/2018 21:29

For those calling bullshit .....

I had a full body Dexa scan at a hospital as part of a medical study ...
at BMI 25, my body fat percentage showed me as significantly overweight
which is why my consultant was threatening major knee surgery (I have the MRI results)

some 5'5" people look right at BMI 25, others at BMI 18.5
hence why there is a healthy RANGE
my healthy weight is lower end

when I'm at BMI 25 I'm ill
when 'm at BMI 20 I am well
if I dropped to BMI 18.5 I'd be ill

I use a "Boditrax" machine once a week and it agrees with the Dexa

BMI 25 is overweight for many, many people

OCSock · 03/07/2018 21:35

My rule of sensible weight, one widely followed by good farmers and people who deal with live stock (and what else are humans), is that one should be able to feel, with light pressure, but not see, the three lowest ribs. If you can't then weight loss should be a priority, for your own health.

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 21:37

When I started working out I went to 20 BMI with cardio then up to 24 BMI where I stay at with lifting and cardio BF% of 18. I am pretty muscular at that BMI from lifting so wonder how massive ichifanny musles must be at 29BMI of lifting I have never seen a woman IRL as muscular and BMI range as Arnie.

SinkGirl · 03/07/2018 21:42

Well that’s a ridiculous statement OC

Due to a medical condition and certain medication, I have a BMI of 28.7 these days and you can feel all my ribs with very light pressure, because of the angle of my rib cage. Doesn’t make me a healthy weight though!

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 21:47

Green coffee my BMI is 29 at 30 weeks pregnant not normally when lifting and I don’t have an up to date body fat percentage , where the fuck are you getting this idea from ? It was 19% pre pregnancy

OCSock · 03/07/2018 21:52

Ichifanny, What % of your patients are in for cardiac care, and the relative % for geriatric care? In older patients, I'd agree that the more weight (relative to a healthy weight) is a good sign. IN our parish, we have very poor outcomes for 50-60 obese people, even marginally obese, because their other risk factors are poor. This is a deprived area with low educational achievement scores, and it is routine to see deaths, especially men, between 50 and 60 years of age.

OCSock · 03/07/2018 21:54

It's a guideline, not an absolute rule. But reasonably reliable, in the absence of an underlying condition.

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 21:55

A 3lbs fetus at 30 weeks wouldn't bring your BMI to 29 from around the mid 20's you must have been around 28 BMI of muscle when you found out you where pregnant which is huge near Arnie big, at 24 BMI and 18%BF my muscle mass is considered excessive for a woman I have never seen a woman go your big 28 BMI of muscle mass I am in awe.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 21:56

We don’t tend to deal with geriatric patients who aren’t the sort of patients who escalate to intensive care the majority are Sepsis , complications from haematology cancers , pneumonia , about 20-30% are cardiac issues . Believe me you want to be in the slightly overweight range when any of he above land you in critical care .

Elementtree · 03/07/2018 21:57

3lb baby? Are we ignoring the placenta, the extra blood, water retention and ever expanding norkage?...

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 21:58

BMI was 23.3 pre pregnancy actually green coffee , with a Body fat of 19% your calculations and assumptions are wrong .

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 21:59

Where the fuck are you getting a BMI from 28 from ? It’s 29 just now and I’ve put 3 stone on , you sound like a seriously unpleasant person .

OCSock · 03/07/2018 22:00

I have a view that some of that shortfall in recovery is down to the catering arrangements Itchifanny.
