AIBU to feel upset (and a little bit shit) at being told I’m “dangerously overweight”

Today I’ve been told I’m at risk of obesity and I’m “really quite overweight” and “dangerously overweight” and I’m absolutely gutted.
I’ve had a hideous year and I know I have put on weight but the mentions of “dangerously overweight” and “obesity” have really shaken me up.
I’m 10st 12 and a size 10 (occasionally an 8 in generous shops like Gap and Next) from 9st 6 with similar sized clothes but leaning more to an 8, this time last year ( this was pre pregnancy and tbh I was trying to get down to 9), . but over the last year I’ve carried a pregnancy to almost 20w, become quite unwell and lost said pregnancy, been depressed as a result of aforementioned loss, moved house (quite a significant move), has an awful arthritis episode that was prolonged And therefore stopped me excersising and started a new full time teaching role that has had me on my knees.
I’ve recently re joined the gym am eating much much better and have lost 3LBs so was feeling quite good.

I’m not sure what I wanted from this post but i just wanted a handhold because it all really shook me up and whilst I knew I was much plumper than before I didn’t really get the magnitude of my weight gain.
I don’t need flaming or anything but I just was so shocked and confused because I didn’t think you could be so dangerously overweight at a 8/10/12 and wondered if any of the MN massive could cheer me up or share their weight loss stories!

Thanks

Knowing you need to lose a few pounds having already lost three, is quite different to being told you’re “dangerously overweight” I feel?

Yeah, I think dress sizes can be a red herring. I’ve been on the cusp of underweight (low end of normal bmi) before and still a size 10-12. I’m on the cusp of overweight now (high end of normal bmi) and I’m a 14. I just don’t seem to change my overall size all that much. I’m tall with broad shoulders, so I’m never going to be weeny 🤷‍♀️.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 19:52

Jesus I’m sick of posts like this 10st 12 is my skinny weight , honestly some seriously warped thinking out there regarding body image and weight .

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 19:54

I know we are so used to obesity we now see fat poeple as normal and weights 10st 12 as being healty.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 19:54

Not you op just the whole angsting over weight if I’m 10 stone I’m a size 8 I’m currently 13 stone and a size 14 , height is 5ft 5

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 19:55

I’m a size 8-10 at that weight so how on Earth is that overweight ?

Aridane · 03/07/2018 19:56

Dangerously overweight is a BMI of 27-30 - no, that’s just overweight, doesn’t even get into the medically obese category.

Aridane
Dangerously overweight is overweight getting close to obese, if you reach obese you past by Dangerously overweight.

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 20:00

PurpleDaisies

It's just a way for doctors to let you know you are getting closer to obese than normal weight.

Elementtree · 03/07/2018 20:02

Surely the over weight category between normal and obese fills that gap neatly?

Dagnabit · 03/07/2018 20:03

OP, were you wearing lead boots and a big parka when you got weighed? Sounds like the practice nurse got her figures wrong if you pardon the pun Most of the nurse at my practice are overweight themselves!

Sorry for your loss Flowers

PurpleDaisies · 03/07/2018 20:03

I have a medical degree green. I havd never heard of the classification “dangerously overweight”.

PurpleDaisies · 03/07/2018 20:04

Dangerously overweight is overweight getting close to obese, if you reach obese you past by Dangerously overweight.

According to whom?

GreenCoffee · 03/07/2018 20:05

Elementtree
25-26 BMI you are overweight look into it, 27-30 you are dangerously getting close to obese you must do something for your health now.

Obese - You probably are a HAES idiot.

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 20:06

BMI was neber Intended to measure health it was originally brought about to indicate body frame , it’s an outdated concept and doesn’t in any way indicate how healthy someone is . I was a heavy weight lifter with a large muscle percentage meaning my weight was heavier but I was still fitter than someone in the perfect BMI bracket . I say that as an NHS worker BMI really has no use apart from identifying underweight patients who need nutritional support .

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 20:07

What’s a HAES idiot?

ichifanny · 03/07/2018 20:08

What a vile person greencoffee I bet you enjoyed jumping on this thread and winding up the fat people eh ?

mmmgoats · 03/07/2018 20:08

This thread really isn't about singling out posters and calling them obese @greencoffee in fact it's the opposite! OP was looking for positive stories of weight loss to boost her confidence.

Mightymelon · 03/07/2018 20:09

@purpledaisys I didn’t stick around to find out definitions I scurried home and felt sorry for myself 😂
I’m .3 of a Bmi point into overweight and I’m planning to lose almost 2 stone so I’m sure I’ll be fine !

Link for this please? “Dangerously overweight” is not accepted medical terminology.

Birdsgottafly · 03/07/2018 20:09

"I have a medical degree green. I have never heard of the classification “dangerously overweight”"

I don't think it's a classification, as such, but a face-to-face statement. It was said to me. My weight was adding to the nerve damage in my hands. Dangerously, can be used, if it is impacting on your medical conditions.

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 20:09

Yes. You don’t need to be an athlete for it to be inaccurate, just a relatively fit and active person with a good bit of muscle will throw it.
