DD1 is in year 9. Going into year 10.

Thursday her History teacher took up a meter stick and smashed it on the table into tiny pieces in rage as he yelled at the whole class for someone not shutting the door.

The teacher has hallucinations and anger issues and has taught at the school since September.

DD1 came home in tears as she was terrified since he was telling that the tigers were coming to get them!

AIBU to bring this up in school? DD1 and her entire class were so scared.

It is terrifying to be in a room with someone who is violent, particularly if it's someone who's supposed to protect you. I feel for your daughter, but maybe this is a lesson to her that adults can suffer from mental health issues.

A teacher and a TA told 2 parents minimal information

Teacher and TA should be fired for telling the parents anything.

If he is back then it will be because he has been assessed as being fit to do so. They will have extra support for him, maybe less classes or TAs in class etc.

Why are they emailing students about illnesses? Do they not go in if the teacher is ill?

sailorcherries · 02/07/2018 23:24

Hollowtalk it is, but would you then come to the end of that period in time and then either go back for a photograph, or wait around at the end for one?

TheBigFatMermaid · 02/07/2018 23:24

If his illness is generally wll managed and this is just a blip, then 5 days i ample for him to be well enough to return to work.

You need to manage your child ability to cope with this in a sensible and mature way, not a reactionary way, as is the nature of teens! You are not a teen, don't get sucked in!

FrillySpidersWillies · 02/07/2018 23:25

I find it really strange that you get emailed staff absences. That’s private information and your school’s LA shouldn’t agree with this especially with GDPR

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:26

It's only to know what cover they are getting. No personal information is leaked.

OP posts:
chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:28

Story's true.
Headteacher I'm sure is aware by now but after an episode like that I don't think 5 days is really enough personally

I had a teacher that had weird rages and mood swings. We all used to say he was psychotic and take the piss. He died of a brain tumour not very long after I left school. That was about 30 years ago now and I still think about him. Poor man.

Sorry don’t know that this is relevant exactly just made me think of it.

Littlechocola · 02/07/2018 23:30

I’m concerned that the parents and students supposedly know so much about a teachers private life.
Speak to the school if you are concerned op, not other parents.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:31

That's very sad.

I don't think this teacher is really "psychotic" but maybe not suitable in the classroom

Im concerned teachers and TAs are so willing to discuss another teachers private medical information with random parents.

slashlover · 02/07/2018 23:32

When did I ever state I wanted to know?

Here

However on the cover board it only says " ILL " in block capitals for " reason " so it doesn't state the full explanation

It doesn't need to give the full explanation on the board. What do you want?

"Teacher X has had some MH issues in the past and was in the process of switching to new medication which did not agree with him. He has stopped this and gone back to his previous medication and five days is more than enough to this to happen."

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:32

Two parents are a teacher / TA.
They know a lot and give out minimal information to the parents sometimes. Bad I know. But at least I know it's not teen gossip.

OP posts:
FrillySpidersWillies · 02/07/2018 23:32

You get the reason though, that’s personal information. I wouldn’t be happy if my reason for absence was sent for people to discuss.

As for 5 days he will be expected in after 5 days ( Thursday was 1st day apparent incident - could have been sent home sick, Friday 2nd day, Sat and Sun they’re included as continued absence and Monday final day then he could continue for another two days via self cert before he submits a sick line)

8sleepyducks · 02/07/2018 23:33

I'm sorry but so much of this story seems like complete rubbish. The cover board stuff makes no sense at all.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:33

I was using that in defence because someone said that it was a breach of privacy.

Never even asked anything.

OP posts:
MarthaArthur · 02/07/2018 23:33

No its adult gossip which is worse and a more serious offense. A sackable offence

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:34

What? How does it not?

They have the cover board up in the reception for the students to see which teachers are absent so they can check what substitute they have...

OP posts:
8sleepyducks · 02/07/2018 23:34

And the TA and teacher talking to parents seems like rubbish as you would be sacked for that in my school.

8sleepyducks · 02/07/2018 23:34

How many pupils are in the school?

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:36

700-800. In the range.

OP posts:
8sleepyducks · 02/07/2018 23:36

How is updated in time for pupils to see if a member of staff rings in sick that morning?

And why would they need to know about cover before they arrived at the lesson?

Also the majority of cover will be by supply so the names would mean nothing to them anyway.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:36

However Year 7-11 is 450.

OP posts:
8sleepyducks · 02/07/2018 23:36

So not massive but you would still need supply in to cover, so it makes no sense at all.
