DD1 is in year 9. Going into year 10.

Thursday her History teacher took up a meter stick and smashed it on the table into tiny pieces in rage as he yelled at the whole class for someone not shutting the door.

The teacher has hallucinations and anger issues and has taught at the school since September.

DD1 came home in tears as she was terrified since he was telling that the tigers were coming to get them!

AIBU to bring this up in school? DD1 and her entire class were so scared.

Did you make a thread about it after it happened OP?

Feijoa · 02/07/2018 23:05

How distressing for those kids. The school should have communicated directly with the parents of the children involved about the incident. I’d suggest that you make an appointment to go into school to talk to someone about this, the students welfare is paramount. Sounds like given the mental health issues of the teacher, he might need longer than 5 days recovery.

MarthaArthur · 02/07/2018 23:05

Does anyone remember that teacher who lost it in class and beat a student around the head with the metal thing? Yeah his mental health suffered and largely it was due to how many feral shits are in schools now. I declined teaching as my dbo is in a high school full of animals now.

Uptheduffy · 02/07/2018 23:08

Martharthur why would your diabetic teacher not have been allowed to teach you again? That sounds very extreme since they were, after all, unwell.

HollowTalk · 02/07/2018 23:08

I am always amazed that it's the pupils who go crazy and attack others, and not the teachers.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:09

No. I made this thread cause he's returning to class tomorrow fgs. I think he needs longer than 5 days off in that state

OP posts:
MarthaArthur · 02/07/2018 23:10

uptheduffy it was what he did during his hallucination that meant he couldnt come back to teach.

sailorcherries · 02/07/2018 23:10

Just because he's scheduled to be in does not mean he will be, christ.
His original sick note may only cover a few days.

MarthaArthur · 02/07/2018 23:10

I should specify he wasnt fired. He still worked at school he just wasnt allowed to teach anymore.

nellieellie · 02/07/2018 23:11

Bit surprised at these replies. If my DD was adamant this happened then I would definitely discuss with the school. If it’s fabrication then presumably investigation would reveal this to be the case. If it’s the truth then it’s not a case of OP wanting the teacher punished, but behaviour like this indicates a problem and given the reported behaviour indicates a loss of control, some kind of intervention is clearly necessary to prevent any escalation - to protect both the children and the teacher. A teacher behaving like this should not be in a classroom.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:12

Students in year 9 or above get sent an emailed 7:30PM sharp stating if it is confirmed they are scheduled and coming in the next day. DD1s email said he would be back.

OP posts:
FissionChips · 02/07/2018 23:12

The school will not talk to you about his health.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:14

Yes.
However on the cover board it only says " ILL " in block capitals for " reason " so it doesn't state the full explanation .

OP posts:
sailorcherries · 02/07/2018 23:14

It's the fact that the DD first told the OP one thing; then there was a little more added in to the story.
Then the smashed metre stick photograph; despite the DD being traumatised from the event.
Then the teachers admitting to students he is odd.
Then teachers and ta's discussing matters with other parents.
Then the gossip from other classes about similar/extended events.

Uptheduffy · 02/07/2018 23:14

You get emails about staff absences? That's insane! If you are going to be off sick you usually don't know that till the morning of the day in question, never mind that it seems an unnecessary breach of confidentiality.

Rednaxela · 02/07/2018 23:14

What @SemperIdem said.

OP do you know anything about bipolar or schizophrenia at all? Or even what severe sleep deprivation can do to a person?

Do you think that a person would act like that for fun? Do you think he was in control of his actions?

Yes you are concerned for your DD's safety. That's all there is to say really!

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:16

What I thought. But it's not really a breach since it only says " ILL " " EXAM " or " TRIP "

OP posts:
sailorcherries · 02/07/2018 23:17

Because he's fucking ill.
Next time a teachers off with a d&v bug should the reason state "uncontrollable shitting" or "ill"?

They do not need to tell you what that illness gives.
And yes the poxy email might say that but unless you are privy to the conversation between this teacher and his management and gp you've no idea when the next sick line is due in and until that time they need to base their information on what they already have.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:17

A teacher and a TA told 2 parents minimal information. It was spread very quickly.
DD1 showed me the photo as soon as she got home. She was crying.
She seemed bloody traumatised.

OP posts:
sailorcherries · 02/07/2018 23:19

But okay enough to snap a picture in the mean time?
That teacher and ta should be disciplined.

HollaHolla · 02/07/2018 23:20

Is his name the opposite of Mr East? I had a similar experience with a History & Geography teacher, about 25 years ago.....

SemperIdem · 02/07/2018 23:20

chatty

Why do you think you have a right to know the ins and outs of this teachers medical issues? Unless you are his employer or an occupational health officer working for the latter, it is none of your damn business.

You are coming across like a busybody. An ignorant one at that.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:20

She was hysterical in the lesson.
She calmed down a little after the lesson which is when she took the photograph.
Then she started again as she got home.

chattybee · 02/07/2018 23:22

When did I ever state I wanted to know?
