So in light of the fact we are experiencing a heatwave & still have a few months of Summer to go please tell me about your favourite UK beach resort/destination.

Unfortunately my knowledge is pretty limited as my parents whisked us away to their respective countries for every holiday & we therefore only had the odd day/weekend trip to the beach.

One of my favourite places on the planet is Kynance Cove & I have heard great things about Porthcurno too ( apparently fab for snorkelling). I love some of the beaches in Dorset too, including Lyme Regis because of its old fashioned charm.

Embleton Northumberland - white sand and turquoise sea

planetclom · 03/07/2018 23:18

Several people have mentioned my favourite and for that I hate them! Stop telling people! It used to be half deserted when I was a child now the whole internet knows they have even done sodding McDonald's ads there!
But... I live in Kent and quite frankly it is awash literally with amazing beautiful beaches and unlike Cornwall we don't have rain as a permanent feature. Great food, pubs, history, attractions and just all round fab but stay away it's ours 😂 no please come honestly it is fab and we also have some great venues for theatre and live shows round the coast and it's not commercial, real good value.

Move to Folkestone! We did last year from London and thanks to HS1 DH can still be in work at St Pancras in less than an hour. The coastline here is to die for, property is still reasonably priced and every day really does feel like a holiday. The kids love it (as do we) We wish we had done it years ago 😁

Missbrick1 · 03/07/2018 23:25

LurksNoLonger I actually fell in love with a property in Broadstairs last year but we just aren’t ready to make the move yet. It’s harder because DH is also a Londoner so both of our families are here & they are both actually within walking distance which is handy with small kids.

Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Seahouses; the whole Northumberland coast down to South Shields. I was born to extremely frugal parents in Scotland and we would always "go to England" on holiday (100 miles max) and be very impressed. They are gorgeous beaches! And marginally warmer than in Scotland! More castles also.

I just head to Withernsea. No one else does and the M62 is preferable to theA 64 on a busy day! It has its own (tacky) beauty. Echo previous posters in regards to Witterings. My parents lived there and it is hell to get to on sunny days.

colouringinagain · 03/07/2018 23:52

Great thread!

Echoing other posters,
Devon Bantham Bay No1. And Bigbury No2.
Cornwall Crantock, sennen, st Ives.
Isles of Scilly for the best in England - fine white sand, shells, turquoise sea
Northumberland Embleton and many more

Many stunning white beaches of West and North of Scotland (but I find Scillies are sunnier!)

Beeziekn33ze · 03/07/2018 23:56

Mill Bay opposite Salcombe

Time40 · 04/07/2018 00:12

The UK has so very many fantastic beaches that I don't think I could choose. Ireland's beaches are absolutely amazing.

Time40 · 04/07/2018 00:12

... too.

yawning801 · 04/07/2018 07:13

Bournemouth, hands-down. Crowded, yes, but a lovely atmosphere and a five-minute stroll from the town centre.

SirRodneyEffing · 04/07/2018 07:44

Croyde, North Devon
Widemouth Bay, Cornwall
Barmouth, Wales

All just as lovely as any beach I've been to in Thailand

DoYouLikeHueyLewisandTheNews · 04/07/2018 08:00

Went to porthcurno yesterday, absolutely stunning.

Waterloo, Llandudno and Blackpool

CammieKennaway · 04/07/2018 08:19

We have a few favourites - best one being Talacre beach in North Wales (although parking is an absolute nightmare, but there's a larger carpark further up the lane and you can cross over the sand dunes) Very clean, very spacious, dog friendly and there's the lovely derelict lighthouse on the beach too (but beware of the mudflats!).
Then we love Gronant Sands which is the beach behind Presthaven (it's actually the same coastline as Talacre and both Gronant and Talacre can be walked along during the same trip without leaving the beach at all.
Benllech Beach is lovely too and finally I actually love Blackpool Beach these days. I used to hate it but it's so much cleaner than it used to be.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/07/2018 08:19

Another vote for the Scillies. Spent many childhood holidays there

thegreylady · 04/07/2018 08:29

Low Newton Northumberland (pub and a few cottages nothing else) some great walks too.

DozyDoates · 04/07/2018 08:37

So many great ones already listed so I'll just add one that I don't think I've seen anyone mention which is Whipsiderry Beach in Newquay. It's down some epic steps but once on the beach it just feels magical. For the intrepid, at low tide you can clamber over rocks and go through to Porth Beach.

44Dillon · 04/07/2018 09:03

The Isle of Wight has lots of lovely beaches - dramatic ones, family ones and romantic ones. Plus, being an island, you can easily visit more than one beach in a week.

xJessica · 04/07/2018 09:15

St Andrews beach is gorgeous. Also love the Northumberland coast and Scarborough too.

BlessBlessYawn · 04/07/2018 09:22

Nothing original here but another shout for Morfa Nefyn. Stunning at any time of year and of course the pub is a huge bonus.

If I could turn back the clock, Fistral Beach and Crantock in the mid 1970s were both stunning. I haven't been back for almost 40 years, sure they're both ruined by now.

BlessBlessYawn · 04/07/2018 09:23

Posted too soon.
Also was going to say that this thread has made me realise how little of the UK I've visited. Reading the posts some of these places sound amazing.

runningkeenster · 04/07/2018 09:32

Blackpool Sands, south Devon. It’s not sandy but it’s stunning

Blackpool Sands in South Devon. Not sandy so the name is a bit weird - it has tiny pebbles by the water and slightly larger ones further up. SO pretty. Fab cafe. When I die I am going to have my ashes scattered there

This is my mum's favourite and she also said she wanted her ashes scattered there although I think she's changed her mind about that now.

I wish people hadn't mentioned the ones on the Channel Islands! SHHHHHHH!!! :)

fecketyfeck · 04/07/2018 09:37

I absolutely love that Tresaith and Aberporth have been mentioned. Llangrannog beach is also gorgeous but the drive down to it is not for the faint-hearted.! New Quay Ceredigion is also great. So many people go to Pembrokeshire and it is lovely there but the next county along Ceredigion is also great with amazing coastline and beaches and a bit quieter than Pembrokeshire.

I lived there for 23 years but moved away 5 years ago. We now visit as much as we can and just can't wait retire back there.
