Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

If you use the bbc class indicator you will probably be elite

If you think class is based on possessions/lifestyle then you aren't high enough to understand how the class system works.

goinglopsy · 27/06/2018 18:44

Upper middle Class. I always thought of upper class as aristocracy.

starsinyourpies · 27/06/2018 18:45

Middle class. You can't buy upper class and talking about class is anyway extremely vulgar!

flowersandcake · 27/06/2018 18:45

Haha! Probably :) Hence why I am curious to know what others think.

Working class.

flowersandcake · 27/06/2018 18:46

Yes, I consider myself middle class. DH's family are most certainly upper class and my dad's family are too. My mum's parents are similar to me and are probably middle class.

Haha, you won't get a consensus here.

What do you do?

busybarbara · 27/06/2018 18:47

Middle middle class. Private school would push you a bit higher but since it's only sixth form I'd say not.

Quiettiger · 27/06/2018 18:47

IMO, I'd say you were "showing off" class.

Caaarrrl · 27/06/2018 18:47

If you work for your money, you must be working class!

flowersandcake · 27/06/2018 18:47

In additon, I would never mention this in real life at all. One of my friends brought it up and the majority of us were rather taken back but didn't want to come accross as unkind.

Not terribly classy boasting on and on about having LOADZA MONEY!

What paper do you read?
What do you use to wipe your mouth whilst eating?
What’s your most used swear?
Hand me down furniture or high street bought?

Those are the true markers.

MrsMotherHen · 27/06/2018 18:47

What does it matter what class you are? All that just makes you sound a pretentious twat.

ScreamingValenta · 27/06/2018 18:48

'Class' in the UK is a very complex concept, and can't be defined solely by lifestyle and income.

Why does it matter to you? It sounds as though you have a comfortable life; can give your children the education and leisure they need, and can afford to give to charity. There is nothing to be gained by trying to stick a label on yourself that says 'Working Class' or 'Middle Class' or whatever.

unicorn56 · 27/06/2018 18:48

in my mind it depends where you live slightly, in some places a 900k 5 bed house would be a mansion, in other places it might be a house in need of renovation. In my opinion you are definitely not working class. Either upper or middle, but I'm not really sure what I'd personally class you as. I think your a bit inbetween if that makes sense, either at the top of the middle spectrum or bottom of the upper spectrum. But then I'm not an expert!

arethereanyleftatall · 27/06/2018 18:48

Middle. Same stats ish as me, and I'd say I'm middle.

HellenaHandbasket · 27/06/2018 18:48

Middle.

SaucyJack · 27/06/2018 18:48

Slytherin.

unintentionalthreadkiller · 27/06/2018 18:48

Working or working that have earns money to buy middle. Very vulgar to talk about class.

flowersandcake · 27/06/2018 18:48

Yes! carl I agree in a sense. I think the majoity of the upper middle classes are techincally working class as well, we all work or our DPs do.

busybarbara · 27/06/2018 18:48

Possessions don't define class but things like private school, private pensions, private healthcare, horse ownership, university attendance (a good one ideally), golf club membership etc certainly do.
