To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

Do you have children that have access to your flat via key/yourself? I only ask as it sounds like the sort of thing my brother would come across and hide as a joke. Could you ask them?

Dopplerineffect · 24/06/2018 14:43

Tucked!

TheLittleThingsLikeVodka · 24/06/2018 14:46

After looking for months (and having to dig out my birth certificate when starting a new job) I found my passport in between two dvds on my dvd shelf. Still don’t have a clue why I put it there.

Mogleflop · 24/06/2018 14:49

I keep hoping to see an update from you saying it's found OP! Hope you do.

Fretfulparent · 24/06/2018 14:49

Under your mattress?
In knicker drawer?
In a shoe?
In jewelry box
Inside a sock?
In a toilet roll

KurriKurri · 24/06/2018 14:51

Might be worth phoning local police station lost property in case you dropped it somewhere. If I found an envelope with money in I would definitely hand it in to the police (obviously some people might keep it, but I'd like to think the majority are honest)

I hope it is somewhere in your house, it is so frustrating to lose things.
I've spent the last two weeks searching for my watch (checked everywhere I'd been, looked everywhere in the house. I eventually found it inside a book I;d read and put back on top of the shelf Confused

StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2018 14:51

Lurking, really hope you find it. Vhevk your handbag again and the car?? Shoes or boots by the front door?

eddielizzard · 24/06/2018 14:52

take all cushions off sofa, check in bookshelves, down back of bed, back of furniture, in bathroom cabinet, airing cupboard, in the car, coat hoods, pockets, handbag. everywhere. leave nothing looked under or behind. go slowly with some music and a cup of tea. keep calm. don't think about the loss, think about what the envelope looked like and picture it in your head.

As other’s have said, a quick prayer to St Anthony is needed. It’s worked for me in some very stressful situations.

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 15:00

Thanks so much everyone for the advice - I haven't found the money yet and I have to go to work now. I have looked in the fridge but not the freezer, which I'll do.

Thanks also for the tarot reading to the poster who did this! I used to read tarot many years ago, so I appreciate it!

Thanks to all of you lovely posters for caring and suggesting ideas. I'm going to try all of them!!!

I'll keep looking. I'll ask security again at work tonight if anything's been handed in.

Wish me luck everyone!
As for dementia.... I'm off to the US in 2 weeks and don't want to have to pay more for my travel insurance if I declare yet another medical condition so I'll look into it after I get back, for sure.

Thanks so much everyone - I really appreciate it and hearing your stories is helping me a lot. So sorry to the PP - I think it was Coats -whose rings worth 4k were taken. Totally devastating.

We had bought a new (old) car & I couldn't find the registration document - to record change of ownership - for weeks. Eventually it turned up next to the washing machine - I'd gone there as I came into the house apparently.

Could you have popped somewhere unexpected in the house just before going out, with it in your hand? Bathroom or spare room or something?

Or hidden it in a coat pocket in a cupboard or wardrobe?

wiilowmelangell · 24/06/2018 15:04

Saint Anthony of Padua. Patron Saint of lost things.
For £500 I would light a tea light, bow my head and respectfully ask for the help and guidance to find the missing envelope.
Keep us updated!

loveliesbleeding1 · 24/06/2018 15:10

Dear st Anthony
Please come around
Something is lost
And cannot be found.

When you find the money light a candle of thanks.

BarbarianMum · 24/06/2018 15:14

All my mum's best jewellery - she gave it to me to look after whilst they went on holiday. Put it somewhere safe but couldn't find it again. Blush It turned up again 2.5 years later when we moved house.

When you're calm try searching the most obvious places again.

On a separate note, go see your doctor about your memory. Menopause seems more likely than dementia so they maybe able to help.

ScreamingValenta · 24/06/2018 15:14

One that has occasionally worked for me is to start looking for something else that's missing. Because I'm looking in different places, the first thing sometimes turns up.

ScreamingValenta · 24/06/2018 15:15

One of the handsets for our cordless phone went missing for 18 months. It turned up in the box room.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 24/06/2018 15:19

My only tip is that when you are looking for it be in a positive mindset. If you are thinking "it won't be here" your brain will blank it out. If you are thinking "it's definitely here" you will spot it.

You didn't actually bank it and forgot that you did? Or leave it in your car? There's loads of nooks and crannies in a car that an envelope can get lost.

diddl · 24/06/2018 15:21

I lost my engagement ring-it was usually on a small chest of drawers.

Emptied all drawers, took drawers out, checked floor, looked in pile of books.

It was actually between the pages of one of the books!Confused

What happens to me is that I look for something in the original packaging but forget I have transferred it into something else. Is that possible? Are you looking for the envelope and forgetting that you put it in your handbag, bank book etc? Hope it turns up!

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 24/06/2018 15:28

*Was you at home when it was given to you?

Do you remember having it after saying goodbye to the person? (Could they have taken it back when you wasn't looking?)

Have you had any visitors since you received the money?

does anybody live with you or have keys to your home?

What rooms were you in that day?

Search each room (and I mean every part of the room)...if it's at home it will be found if you search every draw, pocket, bag etc

DeputyBrennan · 24/06/2018 15:29

I'd be gutted too, and I'd be able to think of nothing else for quite a while, regardless of my financial circumstances. That said, I think the chances of you finding it again are pretty good! Bins would not be emptied until I'd sorted through them at least a couple of times, and looked inside of EVERYTHING (especially other envelopes and papers, particularly ones that 'seem' empty).

Thingywhatsit · 24/06/2018 15:30

Have you put stuff away in a place that you don't usually? I lost my car and house keys the other week. Turned the house upside down, retraced my steps for hours looking for them. I then checked all my Ikea kallax (I have 40 cubes of it on one wall) and found them in a box I could have sworn I hadn't been in!

Moore6701 · 24/06/2018 15:32

Hope you find your money. I would search each room systematically. Maybe contact local police station in case handed in.
Not quite the same but I once had a goat that used to get into people's cars - my husband sold a tractor and was payed in euros- the goat ate the euros. As you can imagine neither I nor the goat were very popular. (Am not suggesting there are any rogue goats around but thought it might give you a laugh!)
Good luck.

We found a passport right at the last minute before our trip was ruined, in the photocopier. Had copied them all previously and forgotten to remove the last one.

Couldn't find a camera for a year or so. Couldn't remember losing it on my last trip out but eventually presumed I had. Claimed on the insurance and lo and behold it turned up a few days later in my walking boots.
