To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

I lost £150 once (lost my wallet with it in) , not a huge amount as such but it was to last me 2 weeks for food and electricity.

I was gutted, had to borrow money from a friend to make it through.
A week later my local shop called me to say it had been handed In. I was happy as a Larry Smile

PattiStanger · 24/06/2018 15:37

I'll say what I always say on lost things threads, keep looking even if you think you've looked everywhere, it's likely to be in the place you think you put it.

I don't know if you are joking about demetia but tbh I would be a little concerned if I couldn't remember exactly when I counted something out less than a day before.

Thanks

Good luck 🤞

Animals are a pain. The dog ate 3 £20 notes once.
DH chucked a large cheque into the recycling once. Luckily I was going to the bank that day to pay it in and managed to retrieve it.
I hope you find it OP, but I can't help wondering about the friend.
It would be extra hassle to repay someone in cash rather than just doing a bank transfer IMO.

Kate223344 · 24/06/2018 15:52

It is still possible the builder took it. That is: day 1 AM left envelope on shelf (for example), day 1 PM realised envelope was missing but didn't look on shelf, day 2 builder arrived and saw/took envelope on shelf.

I think it's more likely you left it in the flat for safekeeping (particularly as you hid your credit cards) than took it to work etc.

I suppose the options are:

  1. It's still in the house somewhere so keep looking (fingers crossed)
  2. Your friend took it (unlikely but depends on the circumstances of the loan)
  3. The builder took it (see above)
  4. It was left at work/dentist/pharmacy (unlikely - see above)

Was the envelope sealed/could you see the cash? Did it have your name on it?

I found my lost driving licence in my dressing gown pocket - about 6 months after I applied for a replacement. At least with cash you will still be able to spend it if it turns up later though obviously hope you find it soon

cate16 · 24/06/2018 15:59

Found £200 tucked inside my she-wee in the wardrobe, I'd totally forgotten I'd put money in it.

BaconCrispsGone · 24/06/2018 15:59

did you post it?

WeareStardustWeareGolden · 24/06/2018 16:02

Hmmm, I'm also with the people who think your friend may have taken it back home with her. Most people nowadays would either give a cheque or pay it via Internet banking back into your account...

ToadOfSadness · 24/06/2018 16:02

I had a 'good friend' steal from me too. She lived downstairs from me and would ask me in to join her of an evening. A few times she would pop out to use the toilet, and a couple of times I went back to my room and later something would be missing.

I didn't twig until one night I got home and went to my room first, left my bag on the bed, then she called me. While I was in her room she popped out, I went back later and my purse was not in my bag. She spent ages helping me look for it, went out with a torch etc. Of course it didn't turn up, and I had just been paid so all my wages were in the purse.

I realised it was her because thinking about it I had my purse when I got home. She also showed me a box of toys she was keeping for when she had a baby and in the box were several purses, I realised then that not only had she been stealing the toys from work, she had also pinched the purses and next time I went to her room, and she went to pop out I said 'Oh I will just lock my door'. Strangely she never asked me in again and shortly after a huge row broke out when she stole from the girl downstairs and everyone in the house knew.

She has also had my post, my mother would send me cash and stamps.

So easy to trust someone, it can make you very wary.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/06/2018 16:07

Totally not the same but I'd been on a night out once and lost my purse with cash, cards and driving licence in. Cancelled my cards but hadn't yet replaced my driving licence. About 3 weeks later i had a sudden flashback of putting my purse somewhere after that night out.. I checked the drawer, lo and behold it was there! I'd checked the drawer originally but it had fallen down a little gap and I'd missed it.

Fingers crossed!

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 24/06/2018 16:07

Hope you find it soon - how annoying your friend really should've done the transfer or walked and put it in your bank esp as that's how you asked for it what were you meant to do with £500 cash???

Oysterbabe · 24/06/2018 16:08

I really hope you find it op.

Ryder63 · 24/06/2018 16:16

Very best of luck OP Flowers

brizzledrizzle · 24/06/2018 16:22

Is there a split in your handbag lining that the envelope has slipped through?

NC4T · 24/06/2018 16:25

Read some good advice here which I have used many times.... your brain knows where this money is. There is somewhere you keep going back to and checking and rechecking..... the money is there, within 6 feet of the place you keep returning to. Do a forensic search of that area. The poster on that particular thread followed that advice and found her lost passport stuck in the inside frame of a drawer.

Make sure you take all the drawers completely out when searching chests of drawers, and look behind and underneath every piece of furniture. You'll find it.

nokidshere · 24/06/2018 16:33

It's so irritating to know you had it and can't find it.

We have "lost" 4 things in the house

Dh's wedding ring - he took it off, bedside cabinet and it's gone. Nowhere to be found despite no-one but us ever being in the room and removing furniture etc to look

A 10 pound note that I handed to dh in the office and hasn't been seen since

Dhs birth certificate and our wedding certificate which have completely disappeared and neither of us can remember why or when we would have needed them for something.

On the plus side I lost a watch 10 yrs ago and it reappeared last year when we moved a fitted cupboard in the bedroom, it had somehow gone down the back. So,there is still hope for the other things.

I hope you find your money

DickTERFin · 24/06/2018 16:33

Say a little prayer to the fairies of the universe.

You need to tell them that you accept that if the money is lost, it is lost and that is the end of it but if it is findable, please will they bring it to you in a swift manner. And then stop thinking about it, distract yourself as best you can with something unrelated.

It acts as a mental trick to allow your mind to relax. I find that when I do this, the inspiration for where the lost item just comes to me within an hour or two.

MulberryPeony · 24/06/2018 16:37

We once had to get a substantial amount of cash out in a foreign county. We were naturally very nervous about carrying he cash back to the apartment and everyone’s eyes were on the bag. Got back from the bank and DH couldn’t find his passport, which was last seen in the bank. It wasn’t in the bag with the cash, nor in any pockets, rang the bank and hadn’t been left there. After at least an hour or searching it was found down the side of the settee cushion. We can only presume he’d put it in his pocket (which he’d never normally do in case of pickpockets) and thankfully hadn’t fallen out anywhere in between. Classic case of loosing something important when distracted!

Of very little importance and on a lighter note I have lost a mooncup! Dreading it turning up in the toy room or somewhere random when visitors come round lol.

brizzledrizzle · 24/06/2018 16:40

OK, this is freaky. I just read this thread and then looked on FB where a friend (overseas so wouldn't refer to £500) has lost an important envelope and is invoking St Anthony.

FluffyPancakes · 24/06/2018 16:40

Have you looked down the sides of your car seat? The chances are more likely that it will turn up than not. Maybe you were wearing a different jacket that you forgot about? Try the police station too, because some people would hand it in. I definitely would. I really hope you find it Flowers

FindoGask · 24/06/2018 16:41

Who wouldn't be devastated to lose an envelope with £500 cash in it? This is the least U AIBU ever.

JohnnyKarate · 24/06/2018 16:43

Similar happened to me a a few years ago with my passport. Started a new job and took my passport in. They gave me back my passport in an envelope. Me and DP were going on holiday in a month so I remember bringing it home and putting it somewhere I would find ready for holiday. Week before holiday I was getting stuff ready and I couldn't find it. I had to go get a new one. We tore the house apart looking for it, before and after the holiday, because we just couldn't work it how it had disappeared.

Since I lost it we have been through a whole house renovation and never found the bloody passport. At the start of this year I was up in the loft moving some bits around and I was drawn to an inflatable lilo tucked away in the corner. I picked it up and out fell the envelope containing my passport. What on earth possessed me to think that was a safe place I will never know!!

You will find it OP I'm sure!!!
