To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

Surely the lesson is that you put it safely in a cash box that is always in the same place and write yourself a note as a reminder.

I don’t see why other people should be inconvenienced just because you can’t keep track of your stuff.

AJPTaylor · 24/06/2018 13:51

between matress and bed?
are you looking for the correct size and shape of envelope?
did you take it out of the envelope?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:52

Wow, lots of messages since I last posted.

Thanks for caring everyone. I am just devastated. Even more so because it's my own stupid fault.

I went through the rubbish and recyling twice, picking out each item and putting it into a new garbage bag. (EE-uw!) Then after this, I discarded it as the rubbish and recycling were two sources I was able to exclude.

I've looked in all the obvious places I might have put it. Now I'm started to go through the flat (I sometimes say "house" when I mean flat) room by room, section by section.

Nobody else was in the flat between me getting the money and realising it was gone.

Before I realised it had gone I went to the dentist, to work, and to the pharmacy in that order. I rang security at work too and they hadn't had anything handed in.

Is the lining in a bag ripped?

stayathomegardener · 24/06/2018 13:52

Just check all the bins first before you throw anything else in them.

I'm confident it will turn up at home but perhaps ring the dentist tomorrow to check.

QuentinSummers · 24/06/2018 13:52

Someone on here once said imagine you are being given the money again and go to the place where you would hide it now.
I have done that before and it works.

stayathomegardener · 24/06/2018 13:53

Cross post!

Scoopofchaff · 24/06/2018 13:55

Re-check places you have already searched too. I once lost something very precious and eventually found it in a place I had already searched three times.

Good luck op!

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/06/2018 13:55

I lost £900 in cash once; I don't use cash and had nowhere to put it, but got paid in cash unexpectedly. I walked home and swear I kept touching it; but got home and didn't have it. Walked the whole route twice in the pitch black looking for it - and then a nice man said it'd been found on the pavement but someone else had already claimed it. Nobody knew who; so there was nothing I could do.

Horrible feeling even now; a long time later - I hope you find it!

Dash38 · 24/06/2018 13:56

Inside a book? Or desk diary? With your post?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:56

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will take your advice. There's no way my friend has taken the money - she's upset that I've lost it and came round to help me look for it yesterday.

It's down to my own stupidity.

Better carry on hunting anyway.

or in the car?

CollyWombles · 24/06/2018 13:57

That is terrible OP, I would be absolutely gutted. I lost £300 on a bus before and have never forgotten it.

Lighthearted, but I read tarot cards and did a little spread. Every card had water on it, the first one in particular made me think of a bathroom, like an open cistern, there was also snow in all of them, which made me think fridge (ice, water). I'd say it's fallen down behind something as all cards except the last one were dark.

Can't hurt to have a look huh!

WerkSupp · 24/06/2018 13:58

I lost the deposit on my car when some twat struck it and totalled it and he had no insurance. The insurance paid the value of the car but it was so little I ended up losing a lot of money.

LolaLilo · 24/06/2018 13:58

Don't panic. It's in your house

Have a cup of tea or a bath then relax,

Go downstairs and search everywhere.

You'll find it x

Loonoon · 24/06/2018 13:58

Not cash but I once lost a £2000 pair of diamond earrings. I was in shock for days.

I hope your envelope turns up. Pray to St Anthony.

FaithEverPresent · 24/06/2018 13:59

When I lose things (often), I find things if I do an general tidy up rather than looking for things specifically. It’s unlikely you’d have left it behind somewhere, so it’s probably in your flat. Start tidying and see if it turns up.

For memory loss, it’s definitely worth a trip to the GP. I have STM issues (long term, along with dyslexia). I find I’m better when I take an omega-3 supplement.

Cassimin · 24/06/2018 13:59

I once found £200 in the inside pocket of a coat I hardly wore.
We were getting building work done so there was a lot of cash floating round.
Have you checked all the clothes you wore.
Was it a cold day so you had cardie/ winter coat on?8

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/06/2018 13:59

DH misplaced £2k once. It was a gift from FiL so no repucussions, but obviously we were gutted. Lots of kids' friends in and out all the time, we did wonder if someone had picked it up.

Then we found it by chance on top of our wardrobe 6 months later Grin. DH had no recollection of putting it there. So don't lose hope.

agedknees · 24/06/2018 13:59

Have you checked the fridge? I found my purse in the fridge once (also in my 50s and getting forgetful).

Rocinante1 · 24/06/2018 13:59

Have you checked all the pockets in your handbag?

I'm a very organised, meticulous person and I know where everything I own is at every minute. If someone came in and asked for something I can say "second drawer in the green unit, in the back left corner" or whatever. Used to work in a bookshop with 5 floors, and if someone came in looking for a book and I had seen it once I could say "it's on the third floor, back right corner, third bay from the corner and two shelves down". Just have that kind of brain, so I don't lose things.

I moved house, and emptied my safe last. I have a zippy wallet with £5000 emergency cash in the safe and when I got to the new house, it wasn't in the box in my car with all the other stuff from the safe. I've never lost anything and I was a mess... it wasn't about the money really, for me it was the complete unknown feeling of losing something but it was awful. I then found it in a compartment of my handbag - I still don't know why I put it separately from the rest if the safe contents but so glad it turned up.

Just keep looking. Its there somewhere, or it's in a bag you used when you went out.

Hygge · 24/06/2018 13:59

OP I'm so sorry. I haven't got anything useful to suggest but we're having some money worries ourselves at the moment and I know how sick and anxious I feel right now, so I empathise with how this must have upset you, especially as you say you're worried about your health as well.

I really hope it turns up for you.

LivingOnAPear · 24/06/2018 14:00

My husband and I have both misplaced passports before. mine was in a pile of papers in the folds of a letter and his was in filing cabinet again folded into a bank statement. I searched for hours both times and it was really hard to see at first. So check piles of paper, magazines etc. I also lost mobile phone which fell down side of bed into a suitcase and was impossible to see. I’ve heard the secret to finding something is to look in the first place you looked but more thoroughly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/06/2018 14:00

It will turn up. I have done the same with jewellery before and not found it for a few years. Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself. What I usually find is when I relax and am just on the “keeping an eye out” these things turn up. It’s happened to me several times. Dh and I were burgled a few years ago and some sentimental pieces were stolen. I’m now obsessed with my pieces not being stolen so I hide them in the most ridiculously obscure places as I’m too ill to wear them.

QTQueer · 24/06/2018 14:00

I usually put things (and forget about them):

In between books

Under things in drawers

Behind photoframe

In cupboards

In boxes. Like sewing boxes/trinket boxes
