To be devastated at losing an envelope with £500 cash in it?

northernlights0710 · 24/06/2018 13:37

Short version: On Friday a friend gave me £500 they owed me in cash, in an envelope. Within the space of 24 hours I have no idea where it is.

My memory is terrible and I often wonder if I've got early onset dementia (I'm in my 50s).

I was nervous getting this money in cash as I don't like having large sums on my person. I would have preferred it put straight into my bank account. But the person who gave me the money didn't want to do that.

I had a feeling that I was going to lose the money. Perhaps I manifested this thought into reality.

I'm gutted and feel sick.

What's the largest sum you've ever lost and how long did it take you to get over it?

I'm sure you're not interested but if you are, here are further details:

When my friend gave me the money (in my home) I was rushing to get out of the house and so I think I left it at home (I live alone) then went to the dentist and then to work.

I remember counting it so that must be when I came home from work. But I just cannot remember where I put it! I had a builder I didn't know coming the next day so started to put credit cards away etc. I still don't know what I did with the cash.

Next morning I looked for the cash in the place I thought I'd left it and it wasn't there. This was before the builder got here, so he's not responsible.

I have looked in all the places it might be, and even went through the rubbish and recycling but it is nowhere. I rang the dentist and the pharmacy but they said nothing had been handed in.

Finally, lesson learnt. I will never again accept cash payments in a large sum. I will insist on a bank deposit.

We have all done something like this so you are not alone. Mt friend swears by this and I have tried it and it does appear to work.

Close your eyes and empty your mind and ask your angel (in your head) to help you find your lost money - you ask three times and then thank them for their help. Might sound bonkers but will cost nothing to try.

Best of luck finding the money Flowers

Wow @TatianaLarina - harsh much?

I don’t see why other people should be inconvenienced just because you can’t keep track of your stuff.

If I'd done what the OP did, and very kindly lent someone 500 quid, I'd expect them to pay it back in whichever way was most convenient for me - not for them.

viques · 24/06/2018 14:26

I put stuff in the cup and plate cupboard, I quite often take down a cup or a bowl and find it has a little treasure inside. I lost my 21st birthday necklace for years, it turned up unexpectedly in an odd place, can't remember where, I was so pleased to see it again. but don't ask me where it is this minute because I couldn't tell you.....

Di11y · 24/06/2018 14:27

Nearly lost my passport. Turned up in the middle of a stack of cds. I'd hidden it from house viewers. Not had time to put it away properly.

IsAnyoneElseMissingCheese · 24/06/2018 14:28

I put things in the coffee cupboard or the crockery cupboard sometimes if I just want it out of view! Have you tried the kitchen cupboards?

Oblomov18 · 24/06/2018 14:29

It's likely it is at Home. Because you counted it. You will have to sit, be calm, then search, room by room.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/06/2018 14:29

Check your purse/bag very carefully. Years ago I thought I had lost some money and couldn't understand it because I KNEW I had put it in my purse. Four months later I discovered a compartment on the inside of the purse that I never knew was there - it was basically "invisible." The top of the compartment lines up exactly with the top of the inside of the bag where the fabric hit the zipper. I'm sorry I can't describe it better! So somehow, on that one random day, I managed to stick money in there.

WeAllHaveWings · 24/06/2018 14:30

I opened a bulk pack of plasters (used when ds had molluscum) we hadn't used in a while kept in a cupboard in the kitchen and found £260 in it. Neither dh or I remember putting it there and still can't remember where it came from. We were probably in a rush to get out one day and stuck it in a box of of the way.

Flooffloof · 24/06/2018 14:30

Ah I do this a lot with small inexpensive things. At least I can buy new. However if you do sonething like this again, send yourself a text with where you put it. Usually writing it down or seeing it written can jog your memory, also you then have a text with the info.
Only useful if you never lose your phone obviously Smile

buttonz · 24/06/2018 14:31

I lost a valuable ring in my house, several years ago. Never found it Sad

Hope you find your £££

Upthewoodenhill1806 · 24/06/2018 14:31

You say you were just about to go out. Were you dressed or did you have your dressing gown on. If so, check the pockets. Even if I’ve done my hair, makeup etc, I usually have my dressing gown on right to the last minute before getting dressed. Good luck, I hope you find it

DolorestheNewt · 24/06/2018 14:34

I don’t see why other people should be inconvenienced just because you can’t keep track of your stuff.

The friend was paying back £500 that she owed to the OP, so perhaps a little inconvenience is a small price to pay if you've either borrowed money, or someone else has paid for something and you need to reimburse them? It doesn't even seem an inconvenience to say that you'd prefer a transfer. In fact, to me, it seems rather 20th century to repay a £500 loan with cash, and rather inconvenient of the friend not to just get the OP's bank details.

DarlingNikita · 24/06/2018 14:35

Has it fallen down behind/between furniture? Cracks in the floor? Is it in between piles of papers? In your pocket?

AcrossthePond55 · 24/06/2018 14:35

Places I have found things of value I've hidden:

Pockets of random clothes in my closet
Wrapped in random clothes in my drawers
Under the mattress
In a tampon box
In a random purse up on the closet shelf
In the back of a bathroom drawer
In china cabinet in/between random dishes (found extra set of keys in a teapot once)

Other places I've found lost things;

On chairs pushed in to the dining table (fell off the table)
Back of the couch or under the cushions
On the mantle behind an ornament
In the dog's crate (don't ask!!)

Collaron · 24/06/2018 14:35

Gutting Sad

I'm betting it's going to turn up somewhere daft in the flat. Really hope you find it.

hididdlyhoneighborino · 24/06/2018 14:37

Are you stressed OP? I get a mental block for things like this and my pin number etc when I'm stressed.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 24/06/2018 14:37

Fridge, pockets, under a pile of crap on the dining room table?

If it’s indoors it will turn up sooner or later.

Justanotheruser01 · 24/06/2018 14:40

No chance dh saw it in your handbag moved it for you and has forgotten to tell You? Similar has happened to us before.

crumpeteer · 24/06/2018 14:41

I’ve lost about that amount of money at work(!!!) when I was cashing up. It was later found in a bag full of stuff where I put it in with loads of other things for ease of carrying it downstairs at the end of my shift. I had no memory of it until it was found because panic had set in...so in my opinion there’s no point trying to retrace your steps, just methodically checking every bag, stack and corner! Good luck, it’s an awful feeling!

MyKingdomForBrie · 24/06/2018 14:41

How absurd to suggest it's 'inconveniencing' the friend she lent £500 to!!

It's in your house OP, try physically retracing your steps maybe at the same time of day with your friend there too x

MyKingdomForBrie · 24/06/2018 14:41

Ignore the 'x' - texting at the same time!!

chocolatesprinkle · 24/06/2018 14:42

Which room were you in when you were counting it? Were you standing up or sitting down?

Dopplerineffect · 24/06/2018 14:42

I was once given £100 in a card from my uncle, I tooked it into my knickers hiding it from my sister. I was 18. I forgot and went to the toilet.

Panicked later and realised it had been flushed.

My Dad took up the manhole and we flushed the toilet , he managed to catch it with a stick.

So lucky, it was a bit wet though.Confused

Hope you find it op.

ScreamingValenta · 24/06/2018 14:42

I don’t see why other people should be inconvenienced just because you can’t keep track of your stuff.

Confused Did you miss the fact that OP had done her friend a favour here by lending her £500? If someone was kind enough to lend me £500 at a time of need, I'd repay it in whatever format they wanted!

CaledonianQueen · 24/06/2018 14:43

Have you retraced every step from your friend giving you the cash OP? I agree to check every pocket in your handbag, yesterday my parents were panicking as a very large cheque was meant to be in their bag and they couldn’t find it. They both looked twice, then I looked and found a conceiled zip which when opened contained the cheque. Do you live with anyone OP? What coat/ jacket did you wear to go out? Did you change first - in which case it could be in a jacket pocket or hidden in your wardrobe/ drawers? Have you tried down the back of the sofa/ the sides? Underwear drawers? In between towels? Tumble dryer? Under the chairs in car? Down the side of chairs in the car?

I would contact the builder and ask if he saw an envelope sitting about when he visited. You don’t need to mention the cash. He might have seen something that can trigger your memory.
