Children kept in cages - Texas

This article in the Guardian today: Children in cages.

What can a non-US citizen do? I know there are undoubtedly worse atrocities happening somewhere in the world, but this article has shocked me.

When I was younger I was involved in anti-apartheid demos, CND, Greenham etc. Now I feel hopeless.

Im really confused about this left right bussiness! I am not on left or right i am just on the morally right way

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:32

A471 for someone who doesnt think trump spilting families is a goof u r spending lot of time defending the whole thing by commenting on whatabboutisms

A4710Rider · 19/06/2018 16:34

As a guide, Trump is doing the same things Obama did, to a certain extent. If you're angry about what Trump is doing now but not angry with what Obama did then then you're probably on the left.

Semster · 19/06/2018 16:37

It's odd that right wingers are so desperate to justify what they're doing by saying 'WELL OBAMA DID IT' while also claiming he's a Muslim Kenyan-born god-hater.

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:37

Im not American i dont have a side, i am commenting on what i see now , and what i did see of obama he certainly did not do the same things trump is doing. I can list them if ur not sure

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:38

Whatabboutisms makes me angry they r so dangerous

Semster · 19/06/2018 16:38

Obama actually imposed a travel ban from muslim countries during his tenure. No fuss made then either.

There was no fuss made because he didn't impose a travel ban from muslim countries during his tenure.

No need to get hysterical now, is there?

Semster · 19/06/2018 16:41

No need to get hysterical now, is there?

Ah no - thousands of children have been separated from their parents. The world is horrified. Republicans are horrified.

But no need to get hysterical.

A4710Rider · 19/06/2018 16:41

Yeah, it was only Iraq.

A4710Rider · 19/06/2018 16:42

But no need to get hysterical

Why bring Kenya, etc into it when it hasn't been mentioned?

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:43

No need to get hysterical is quite a poor response, as i am horrified whats going on and if that makes me hysterical so be it

A4710Rider · 19/06/2018 16:44

Ah no - thousands of children have been separated from their parents

10,000 British kids have been raped and abused by gangs all over the country. What did you do about it? Did you start a thread? Did you get hysterical then?

Did you

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:45

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:45

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 16:49

whataboutism

ˌwɒtəˈbaʊtɪz(ə)m/

noun

BRITISH

the technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue.

JerushaAbbott · 19/06/2018 16:52

@A4710Rider

Obama actually imposed a travel ban from muslim countries during his tenure. No fuss made then either.

He didn’t impose a travel ban. Entry requirements were tightened in order to implement enhanced screening procedures, which remained in place in January 2017.

“The Obama administration passed the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 after the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris. The Act, however, unlike Trump's much more broad order, only affected people eligible for the visa waiver programme, rather than suspend all citizens' travel from one of those seven countries.“ BBC, January 2017

This was widely reported.

No he is not. That is simply untrue.

It is true that Obama was fairly tough on illegal immigration (despite Trump lying about Obama being a pushover on illegal immigration). Many democrats and liberals did not approve of this aspect of his policy and said so at the time there was lots of news coverage of it.

But not sure if it is worth arguing with people who think that separating children from their parents (and also from their siblings - boys are kept apart from girls in many of these camps) is all just part of enforcing the law don't ya know. Many republicans, major church leaders, and the first lady herself have have expressed their disapproval. To think like this requires you to think of those children not as children just like yours - but as something essentially "other".

ScipioAfricanus · 19/06/2018 17:07

Ah yes, the tu quoque rhetoric, @A4710. Always solid!

Mistigri · 19/06/2018 18:40

A lot of what A4710 is saying isn't whataboutery, it's just plain old lies. Obama didn't impose a Muslim ban, or remove the children of adults who committed misdemeanours, and saying that he did is either (a) ignorant or (b) deliberate deception. Take your pick.

chicken2015 · 19/06/2018 18:42

I was meaning this

CoolCarrie · 19/06/2018 18:54

No one is above the law in the US ! That’s a laugh! If you can afford a good lawyer, like OJ Simpson, or pay off people off like Michael Jackson did , you can definitely be above the law in the US.

CoolCarrie · 19/06/2018 18:56

And many people started threads about the grooming gangs.

CoolCarrie · 19/06/2018 19:06

Britain has detention centres as well, so do any of us on here know what happens in those?

JerushaAbbott · 19/06/2018 19:34

Not a great situation according to the papers: Guardian and here.

Here’s the inspection report, however, which shows a largely improving picture inspection report.

Not fantastic for children generally here but I don’t think they’re being ‘caged’...
