I took on the mantle to start another thread. If that is not allowed, Mods delete the thread, I am not sure of the protocol. But it certainly is an interesting discussion!

If allowed to stay as my OP, let's go!

OP posts:
Rosstac · 09/07/2018 13:01

bellinisurge So the gov gives the public the vote, accepts the result of the vote and now can’t implement the result and it’s the voters who are stupid, don’t ask a question if you don’t like the answer

Rosstac · 09/07/2018 13:02

bellinisurge And over 80% of the people vote for a party who said we are going to leave the SM and CU

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:04

They can implement the result. It's called a hard Brexit.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 13:05

"So the gov gives the public the vote, accepts the result of the vote and now can’t implement the result and it’s the voters who are stupid, don’t ask a question if you don’t like the answer"

It was the leave voters who ignored all the information provided.

"And over 80% of the people vote for a party who said we are going to leave the SM and CU"

This was a general election not a single issue vote, claiming this is incorrect and shows the paucity of your arguments.

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:05

@ShatnersWig Me too.

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:12

Do I think the EU has all the answers to our economic and social woes? No, of course not because I'm not stupid.
Do I think ripping everything up in a fit of pique and threatening chaos is good for our country is good? No, of course not because I'm not stupid. And that's why I voted Remain.

ShatnersWig · 09/07/2018 13:21

@bellinisurge I'm hoping to win the Euromillions and buy myself my own island. You seem sensible, wanna come?

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:25

@ShatnersWig sounds like a plan. Grin. As good as any other plan going.

Rosstac · 09/07/2018 13:39

topcat1980 It was the government who accepted and acted on the result

longwayoff · 09/07/2018 13:41

Wait for me!! Ive got some tins now

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:42

@Rosstac - do you seriously think any government would have said "oh, it's just advisory. We know best. Let's not bother ". ?
Don't blame the government for this. Blame Leave voters for dismissing the warnings as Project Fear.

54321go · 09/07/2018 13:44

A 'Hard' Brexit will be VERY hard if actually implemented. Starting off with NO flights or ships into/out of the UK.
This means all industry moving anything in or out of the UK will stop.
After about a week the shops will be largely empty of food.
That is just the start.
Setting up new negotiations for trade with anyone in the world will take months.
That is a reality that 'leavers' voted for and everyone else will suffer from.

Rosstac · 09/07/2018 13:44

If TM knows that Brexit will destroy the U.K. she should revoke A50, then watch the con’s rot for a decade or two, party or country up to her, if she carries on with Brexit then she must think it will be ok, surely no serving PM would knowingly destroy the UK

Rosstac · 09/07/2018 13:45

bellinisurge Why in your eyes is the government blame free ?

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:45

@longwayoff - tins are a great start. We can use them on @ShatnersWig 's island.
P.S. there's a prepper topic on MN. Give it a look if you haven't already. Tinfoil hat is optional.
PPS. Look at Prepper Pot Pourri on Youtube. All the scary camo loving guys are in awe of her.

ShatnersWig · 09/07/2018 13:46

Oh the naivety

54321go · 09/07/2018 13:46

This is not 'project fear' it is project 'legal reality.'

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:47

@Rosstac - the Leave voting public does not get off the hook on this by blaming the government. I blame the government for all sorts. But this is on the Leave voters.

bellinisurge · 09/07/2018 13:51

My non-prepping DH (also a Remain voter) who likes to tease me about the tin foil hat stuff said the other night that "maybe we should look at getting a few extra tins in" And he doesn't moan at me any more if I come back with a few extra bottles of bottled water .

longwayoff · 09/07/2018 14:01

Thanks bellini. I'll have a look. God what a bloody nightmare screw up this is. And lovely Donald due to visit too. There's only one thing missing, someone with "I blame Jeremy Corbyn, its all his fault pinko commie rat". Think thats covered it now.

TheMonkeyMummy · 09/07/2018 14:05

All of my family and friends voted out. It's a regional thing. I have worked through my anger and despair at them. Otherwise I would actually go insane. (Esp at my DM, who thinks the daily mail is factual. Confused)

So, I stand firmly by my earlier statement, putting the blame on Cameron. He started the ball rolling and never thought it would go as far as he did. He didn't need to call it. He should have stated it was not an actual vote. He should have put a c) don't know option. He should have seen it through.

I am now just hoping for an actual people's vote.

I live in Switzerland which has an actual true democracy. They voted in 2016 as well on limiting free movement whilst retaining access to the EU, and at the end of the two years, realised it couldn't work. And they owned it. Not sure why no one in the UK is willing to do that...

abilockhart · 09/07/2018 14:11

At least, it's comforting to know that Jacob Rees-Mogg will ensure his firm and its wealthy clients are shielded from the repercussions of a Hard Brexit.

His City firm is setting up an investment fund in Ireland after it emerged that its clients were warned about the risks of a Hard Brexit.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/06/13/tory-mp-jacob-rees-mogg-defends-setting-hedge-fund-branch-ireland/

Of course, the rest of us will just have to soldier on.

ShatnersWig · 09/07/2018 14:22

Wonder what Cameron thinks of this of his from 4 May 2015 now...

"It's the start of a week when Britain will decide its future. By Friday you’ll either have Ed Miliband, or me as your Prime Minister. It's that simple - an inescapable choice: me leading a strong and stable Government, or with him: the chaos of being held to ransom by the SNP. Your vote can and will make a difference. It's that close.

"The risks are real and present. If Labour wins with the SNP’s help, Britain and its economic recovery will grind to a halt. The SNP will hold the Government to ransom every time there is a vote in the House of Commons - demanding more borrowing and higher taxes to pay for more welfare.

"The alternative is to vote Conservative on Thursday to ensure George Osborne is back in the Treasury and I am back in No10 on Friday. We'll continue the long-term economic plan - ensuring stable Government, a strong economy and a brighter future for you and your family."

If only he'd known it would be DUP not SNP holding the sway!

{Flückiger also warned science contracts in Switzerland were already being lost due to the uncertainty about the future status of free movement. He said that before the 2014 vote each Swiss science contract had two or three times the chance of being retained than other European projects. He said: “We had this success because we are capable of attracting the best researchers in the world.”}
Referenced from the Guardian article a couple of posts back.
The realisation if you upset the applecart your credibility drops and you lose contracts. Far more damaging than most of the other aspects which gradually pale into in significance.
