To correct my work colleague

We’re having bangers mash beans and onion gravy for tea.
She insists peas are superior to beans and gravy should never be combined with beans as you can’t have two sloppy things on the plate. She is so very very wrong.

OP posts:
acornsandnuts · 14/06/2018 17:00

I think op is feeling the shame..rightly so.

ScarletLouise · 14/06/2018 17:00

Ewww

Lalliella · 14/06/2018 17:00

Peas definitely superior to beans.

Peas + gravy = yum
Beans + gravy = 🤢
Onion = 🤮

I also don’t like gravy with mash, too sloppy!

SallyOMalley · 14/06/2018 17:00

Blush ignore me .. I misread your Op..

lottiegarbanzo · 14/06/2018 17:01

Baked beans? Not green beans? With gravy? Yeuch!

JuicySwan · 14/06/2018 17:02

Yabu. Bean juice all mixed up with gravy. Bleugh 🤮

yawning801 · 14/06/2018 17:03

Green beans and gravy? Yes.
Baked beans and gravy? HELL NO.
I'm allergic to peas so I can't comment on them.

RatherBeRiding · 14/06/2018 17:05

I have gravy with everything. I like the sound of your tea. Grin

Bettyfood · 14/06/2018 17:06

I'll just correct you for a moment OP. Work colleague is a tautology.

Other than that I don't mind beans and gravy as long as there is enough sausage and mash to soak them up.

iklboo · 14/06/2018 17:06

Beans and gravy? Ewwwww.

Can I ask about the consistency of said gravy? Watery pish or 'Could double up as wallpaper paste / practically a life form' thick gravy?

CookieSue222 · 14/06/2018 17:07

Make way for a professional take on this dilemma...….
In our kitchen (at work) the rule is simple - it's EITHER baked beans OR gravy - never the twain should be served on the same menu. I believe there may be a law against it.

fourquenelles · 14/06/2018 17:07

I like beans and gravy.

Bangers, mash, onion gravy and peas would be my preferred option though (she adds hastily in case the villagers are reaching for their torches and pitchforks)

KitKatCHA · 14/06/2018 17:08

I'm from the NE - we have gravy with EVERYTHING but even for me, beans and gravy is taking it a step too far. Colleague is in the right!

BoneThugs · 14/06/2018 17:09

Bangers and mash with peas and gravy is the only way! Beans and gravy together 🤢

mogonfoxnight · 14/06/2018 17:13

agree peas, but mushy peas would be superior (not sure if that has already been said)

PlatypusPie · 14/06/2018 17:14

Peas and mashed potatoes are perfect plate mates - a little mash glues the peas onto the fork so very neatly without having to overly squash them or risk pinging off.

Sausages and beans ( especially over a camp fire ) are also a duo that work well but not with mash as well and certainly not with gravy ( unless it’s like my late MIL’s gravy, so solid it almost needed to be sliced eek)

critiqueofeveryday · 14/06/2018 17:16

Your friend is dead right. Are you northern? Because I live in the north of England and they put gravy on chips here too, and said chips are never ever fluffy on the inside and properly crispy on the outside. It's just wrong.

TattyFrench · 14/06/2018 17:17

One of the oldest pie and mash shops in London do beans and gravy. When I lived in London I had lunch there every day. Pie, mash beans/peas and gravy for £3. With cherry pie and custard for £1. I would move back to London just for the pie shop.

Disclaimer, the gravy must be on the pie and mash, not put directly on the beans.

Now I'm really hungry for pie, mash and beans!

Dobbythesockelf · 14/06/2018 17:17

Beans and gravy together is horrible. And I will eat gravy with pretty much anything.

Winniefred · 14/06/2018 17:17

What are you getting into arguments over another persons idea of social convention? Pray go tell Americans that Gravy, Grits, Ham and Beans is not acceptable! Its not up to anyone else what you eat, or how you like your plate laid out! Geez Rhubarb and Custard nothing more than a wet mess on a plate and the same pea fetishists will tell you that is conventional! In fear for my life would I set a pea in front of my children, school did all the work for me in banning both peas and corn from the dinner plate. Beans with sausage gravy and mash is a treat for some. Just go for it.

FuckPants · 14/06/2018 17:17

She's right, you're wrong.

MillieMoodle · 14/06/2018 17:18

Baked beans and GRAVY?! No no no. Never. Ever.

Bangers, mash, baked beans = the best.
Bangers, mash, peas and gravy = an acceptable substitute.
Bangers, mash and anything else =
an abomination.

lifechangesforever · 14/06/2018 17:18

I'm with your co-worker on this one! You can't have 2 'wet' things on a plate, they'll just congeal. I would choose peas with bangers & mash. This is coming from a Yorkshire girl so I believe I'm right in all things gravy related Grin

TattyFrench · 14/06/2018 17:18

Oh yes, the peas should be mushy.

I'm now contemplating driving 120 miles to get pie and mash for dinner.

enjoyingscience · 14/06/2018 17:18

both are excellent options.
