to think it's not normal to leave washing up over night?

Had to have words with DP tonight...

Can anyone please tell me if I'm being unreasonable or not in thinking that:

  • surfaces should be wiped after use (not 3 days later)
  • if you cook on the hob and get oil everywhere you should clean it (same day)
  • you don't leave washing up overnight to get smelly and gross
  • nor do you leave bits of food floating in the drain catcher in the sink when you can just put them straight in the bin
  • it's not normal to do not one bit of cleaning in the week and to just mop a floor or give a surface a wipe on a Sunday

AIBU in expecting DP to do the above? I'm not a clean freak but I like the house to be clean. I'm torn between leaving his shit for him to do and it building up all week for him to half heartedly clean on the weekend, or to just clean it myself and be happy my house is clean but to want to nut him for being so lazy....

Leaving dishes, meh. But tuna tin hiding under a plate in the sink, and the whole place stinking of tuna oil because he cba to rinse it down the drain, you are DNbu! Gross!!

"I'm not a clean freak"
Yes you are.

Clean freak, that would be excessive c,earning schedule & thinking about
Getting the hump about manky dishes left in sink, for days on end, that’s understandable
I get steeping dishes overnight and washing when you return home.thats ok
Days on end in sink, not ok

YABU

I always wipe down the surface after I cook, have the main saucepans etc. cleaned before I sit down to eat, and get the dishes done and put away afterwards.

DP would leave them for days, and would never even notice! I know I'm probably a bit OCD but he's getting better... Smile

  • Sorry - YANBU! Not at all!

When it was just the two of us, we played house jointly cooked, washed and wiped the dishes each evening and left things tidy before bed.

When I was a SAHM, I did the majority and DH pitched in in the evenings as we juggled dinner and DC bedtimes. We always ate relatively early, six-ish, which gave us some leeway.

Once DC were old enough, washing up became their job, in exchange for pocket money.

Later, we got a dishwasher. The relief of not having to do dishes at all meant we were happy to routinely tidy up and clean as a family effort. It's really not a chore.

Overnight yes. Days? No.
