To ask you all just HOW painful is a Brazilian wax?! (and other questions)

So, after 10 years of trimming my lady garden, I'm considering trying a bikini wax for the first time out of curiosity (I don't shave down there because I get ingrown hairs). I have a few questions...
How bad is the pain - both initial and the aftermath?! Like on a scale of 1 - 10?
How long does it take for the hair to grow back?
If you get it done regularly, does the hair eventually stop growing back?
Any bikini wax tips/funny stories/horror stories?
Thanks in advance!

The fact that when you go for a piss afterwards and it sprays everywhere is really annoying too.

Erm what??

Wussypants · 08/06/2018 07:33

Thank you for all your replies! I have to admit I'm a little bit scared after hearing about how painful it is (I'm a bit of a wuss BlushGrin).

I'm thinking of booking a 'hot' wax (apparently the wax is a bit thicker and they peel it right rather than using paper strips? Meant to be less painful!) - and will probably just start with a regular bikini one to see how I go instead of jumping straight to the Brazilian.

I also forgot to say that I've got a home laser thing (phillips lumea), so I don't really get much body hair anywhere else as I've shaved/lasered everywhere apart from down there (cos I'm a wimp!). Didn't realise you can use it on your bikini area, but says you can on the website, and can also do it after waxing, so will give it a go!

For everyone going eh to my comment about pissing.
So did I - then I googled it and it isn’t just me.......
Something to do with swollen labia......
But seriously, I had to sit on the toilet seat for at least 4 days afterwards. No squatting.
TMI!!

showgirl · 08/06/2018 07:46

It's painful but over so quickly. Make sure you have hot wax used not strip wax a lot less painful. First couple of times the hair grows back quite quickly but after that it really.slows down. I now have bald patches.

JingsMahBucket · 08/06/2018 08:28

@Mari50 why would you not sit down anyway?

Sorry, off topic. Grin

Rather than regular manscaping, I just get a full back, sack and crack every 7-8 weeks, which includes full pubic wax. I’m guessing that the skin in women’s and men’s intimate areas are similarly sensitive, and it really isn’t bad at all.

From what I hear, going to a salon that specialises in intimate waxing is to be recommended. The women in these places - and it’s always women - see dozens of fannies, arses and willies every day, and they really know what they’re doing to make it as quick, painless and embarrassment free as possible.

JacquesHammer · 08/06/2018 09:05

and it’s always women

It really isn’t!

I didn't find it hurt as much as underarms. I had them done once, never again, they were red for ages too, probably due to the waxing technique. I was so disappointed how fast they grew back.

Nquartz · 08/06/2018 09:21

I would recommend you keep trying, my first time was incredibly painful (thick, dark hair), bled a bit & sore for days BUT it's never been as painful since & after 2 years of every 2/4 weeks (summer vs winter) hardly any grows back & I just epliate the few that do.

Re: bikini, I was very hairy when I started, after waxing for years so little grows back I only need it once a year now for the big holiday & just trim to keep it neat.

Nquartz · 08/06/2018 09:22

Bold fail! The underarms comment was to fintress

itsbritneybiatch · 08/06/2018 09:23

It hurts but it's a really quick pain. I used to get them regularly. The top front hurt me more that's the underneath.

I've moved cities now so just immac the lot off now as I don't know any decent waxers and none of my friends have had Brazilians or get regular waxes.

For me the worst part was not the pain it was having to pull my arse cheeks apart so she could do my bum. The shame. She saw parts of me I haven't even seen.

But then if you go the same waxer everytime you get used to it and aren't bothered anymore.

Worth it.

mishfish · 08/06/2018 09:25

Make sure the hairs aren’t too long before. I go over mine with some beard trimmers to trim then right down. And ask for hot wax! I usually get a Hollywood

Snowspeckledeyelashes · 08/06/2018 09:30

I once (very, very stupidly) asked my dh to give me a bikini wax. Oh the pain 😳

Salavart62 · 08/06/2018 09:34

Yes the wax that sticks to the hair but not the skin makes a huge difference, probably Lycon pp mentioned.
I went with a bush to a new place (new city) and she got the kitchen scissors out to trim me, I swear I thought I was gonna be down a lip. Get recommendations!

Joey7t8 · 08/06/2018 09:39

*and it’s always women

It really isn’t!*

Really? I’m genuinely surprised. I’ve been getting various waxes at salons in different cities for over 10 years now, and I’ve never been anywhere with a male waxing therapist.

I’d have thought that women, who probably still account for at least 80% of business, would be quite uncomfortable with that.

MissCharleyP · 08/06/2018 09:43

It’s not THAT painful, I have Hollywood (everything off) and have done so for about 15 years. Just make sure it’s hot wax and not strip, that was a very painful mistake. I prefer Waxperts, wasn’t that chuffed with Lycon but that could have been that it was too hot. OST good therapists will test the temp on their own arm first, if they don’t and it’s too hot when they put it on then say as that is very painful. My hair comes out really easily now but every therapist who’s ever waxed me is surprised at my pain tolerance!

MissCharleyP · 08/06/2018 09:43

*Most good therapists

lynmilne65 · 08/06/2018 09:44

It is someone ripping out your pubes!!!😵

JacquesHammer · 08/06/2018 09:45

@joey7t8

My salon has a male therapist. He does everything. I’ve seen him for waxing, he also has a large male client base.

Salon makes it obvious when you book, never been a problem as far as I know.

lynmilne65 · 08/06/2018 09:49

I'm not sitting on toilet for 4 days ! 😬

StellaWouldYouTakeMeHome · 08/06/2018 09:50

I’ve had leg waxes, bikini line waxes, multiple tattoos, and I’ve given birth twice with only paracetamol (not by choice obviously) which I then dealt with a second degree tear, so I’m probably pretty tough and I had a Brazilian once. Goodness never ever again. Just no

Luckystar1 · 08/06/2018 09:50

I get a Hollywood every 4 weeks religiously. I book them all in advance so I don’t slacken off (I’m very lazy!)

It hardly hurts at all, but I have very little there now really. I recommend getting bikini clippers to your pubic hair before you go and get it quite short as that means less pulling. Get a hot wax, not strips. Do not go before your period. I did once recently. It was SOOOOOO much sorer (and that’s even getting waxed on my due date)

I would urge you to continue getting it done. There’s no point going through the first (and worst!) one to them jack it all in. I think that’s mostly why I keep going 😂

Joey7t8 · 08/06/2018 09:53

@JacquesHammer

Interesting to know. I’ve got so used to it being a women that I don’t think I’d have a orbetter preference either way now. They have always been so professional.

TheBogWitchIsBack · 08/06/2018 09:54

The first couple of times it hurt, but the more regularly you go the less it hurts. It's a case of gritting your teeth the first time. I thought getting my legs waxed was worse!
Be aware that certain times during your cycle it will hurt more than others.
I went when I was pregnant once and that was a huge mistake 😖

AhoyDelBoy · 08/06/2018 10:34

Are 'Brazilians' and 'Hollywoods' the same thing? I'm confused? Also those saying 'It's worth it' in what way?
