To allow DD (10) to watch Love Island

Laceystace · 04/06/2018 20:39

So last year me and my older DC became addicted to the show love island. DH watches it from time to time however we felt our youngest DD ( 9 at the time) was too young to watch it. I personally believe that it's not really appropriate for any of my DC to be watching plus 2 are taking their GCSEs so I don't want any to be distracted. However I doubt it will stop them.

The problem is DH had promised that DD would be able to watch it this year. I knew it was a bad idea for him to promise this however DH thought DD would forget so I went along with it.

Now a year has passed and DD is getting prepared to watch the show. I feel really uncomfortable with the whole thing. The show isn't for children her age. 10 o'clock is too late for her to be staying awake watching trash on TV. I told her yesterday she wouldn't be able to watch it which led to a big tantrum which only clarified my feelings towards the situation. She was crying all last night about how I promised etc. I apologised to her, however she wasnt taking any of it. She felt it is unfair how it was only her that couldn't watch it in the family. I tried to persuade the older DC to maybe give this series a miss or watch it in their bedrooms as DD feels left out. They now feel its unfair to them and that they prefer watching it together as its the only show we all seem to like watching together. DH thinks I should let her watch the first episode as she most likely won't like the show and won't watch it again in the future. However I don't think it's about her liking the show it's about her feeling left out.

I really don't know how I'm going to deal with this it's starts in a few minutes, I'm thinking of maybe allowing DD to maybe watch a few minutes then put her to bed. I just think its a shame that the only show we are happy to watch is trash TV it's embarrassing. I think it would do the family good giving it a miss this year. I just don't want to come across as a 'party pooper'.

Very unsuitable. It's all about sex!

Exposing a child to sexualised content is abusive. This is a little girl. You says she's 10, so either the baby of the year group making her a young year 6: or even worryingly a year 5 child.

Janus · 04/06/2018 21:44

I have a 10 year old girl (and 15 and 17), no way, at all, is 10 year old allowed to watch it.
Last year kids in year 6 watched it and the headmistress actually rang their parents and told them she thought it was totally wrong for any of them to be watching! Probably a school year older than yours? Only last year did I let my, then, 14 year old watch and still felt uncomfortable.
I would have absolutely no worries having a row with my husband and see how he could justify a 10 year old watching couples having sex.

Rhiannon13 · 04/06/2018 21:47

So tonight a 10-year-old girl has learnt that men are in charge and it's acceptable for them to treat women like meat. Well done Mum.

cherrytrees123 · 04/06/2018 21:49

Not appropriate at all

happymummy12345 · 04/06/2018 21:50

I think 10 is too young for that kind of programme. I say it as someone who is a big fan of the show.

Laceystace · 04/06/2018 21:53

Went downstairs and talked to DH. Told him that's it's inappropriate to allow DD to watch this. He laughed in my face told me that it's OK if he is watching it with her and told me that he will just not allow DD to watch the inappropriate parts. I told him the whole show is inappropriate for her. I then told DD it's time for her to go to bed as she has school tomorrow. She refused to listen to me. DH was allowing her to watch it and said I should allow he to watch it tonight. It just turned into an argument where I was completely shut down by DH.

I just feel like a need a bit of a cry. I have no control over my family. My dd has no respect for me. The show is completely inappropriate. I can just hear the stupid comments coming from the contestants makes me worried for my DD. If DH allows her to watch it tomorrow I'm just going to take the plug for the tv. This isn't happening again.

I think you need to do more than take a plug.

I think you need to make an appointment with Relate and possibly Women's Aid

Poptart4 · 04/06/2018 21:55

I have a 10yr old and no way in hell would I let her watch it. The idea that no one should watch it so as not to upset dd is absurd! She has to learn there are things older people can do that she can't.

As for your husband, it absolutely sounds like your scared of him. You say your not yet your hiding in your bedroom while he watches people having sex with your 10yr old daughter and you won't stop it as you don't want an atmosphere!!

Grow a backbone put your 10yr old to bed and if your husband doesn't like it show him the door. Afew days sleeping on a mates sofa might teach him to respect you abit more because he clearly has no respect for you at all.

MaisyPops · 04/06/2018 21:55

It's not for 10 year olds.

Why even compromise. If you're going to say 15 mins is ok, why not the whole show? 10 year olds don't need to watch desperate perma tanned 20something socialities shag people on TV.

Laceystace · 04/06/2018 21:55

Janus

Dd is in year 6. I really hope she doesn't go bragging about it in school. It's going to make her and my family look bad. It will also end up leading other kids lot go to their parents and persuade them to watch aswell. I don't want them going through this shit.

OP posts:
ChristmasTablecloth · 04/06/2018 21:57

I'm really unhappy that my 17 year old wants to watch this trash - and so far she hasn't been able to as we only have 1 TV in the house - so she might only watch it when we are out. Surprised you even had to ask.

MaisyPops · 04/06/2018 21:58

Sorry. Cross posted with you OP.

You have a massive DH problem.
How on earth can he think a 10 year old should be watching something so sexual?
The thing is, if I heard our y7s were watching it then we would probably have to raise it internally as inappropriate sexual content in school.
Sorry you're in this situatoon Flowers

autumndreaming · 04/06/2018 21:58

OP, there will be people having sex on this show. It's not suitable for a 10 year old.

Poptart4 · 04/06/2018 21:58

Cross Post op. After that update fuck your husband out ASAP as he has no respect for you at all and your children are following his lead.

This isn't about a TV show, this is much bigger than that.

Ellieboolou27 · 04/06/2018 21:58

Op please tell us that 10yo is in bed and you’re not letting her watch this!

I’d go mental if my dh even suggested our dd’s watch this crap, let alone let them watch it!

Rhiannon13 · 04/06/2018 21:59

'It will lead other kids to go to their parents and persuade them to watch aswell'? Are you serious?? You know in a family it's the adults who are the decision makers don't you? That it's the PARENTS who decide the rules?

Scoogle · 04/06/2018 21:59

Bloody hell OP.

I think you know she shouldn't be watching it. What a horrible situation to be in and how awful that your DH isn't supporting you. Is it worth having a chat with DD tomorrow when you're alone to discuss how inappropriate it is. Obviously your DH is a separate issue. In what way does he think it's correct for a child to watch Love Island? it sounds like you're up against it

mizu · 04/06/2018 22:01

Haven't read the whole thread but my DDs are 12 and 13 and no way will they be watching this.

BastardMs · 04/06/2018 22:03

My 15yo watched it til 10 tonight, for the first time. I can't say I was entirely comfortable with it.

Laceystace · 04/06/2018 22:04

I can't just drag dd to her room. The problem is she's getting a different message from me and dh. If DH told her to go to her room she would.

OP posts:
Clutterbugsmum · 04/06/2018 22:04

well he can get her up and ready for school tomorrow, and he can explain to the school if it is brought up as to why he thought is was a good idea.

Figgygal · 04/06/2018 22:04

Your husband is a dick sorry

AgentProvocateur · 04/06/2018 22:05

It’s quite creepy that a 10 year old is watching this show with her dad. It’s all about sex - nothing else. I think you can expect a call from the school tomorrow, OP.
