To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

So apparently we're now at very high risk of exiting the EU in March without a trade agreement with the EU. The government wanted to keep it secret, but it's been leaked that the middle of the 3 outcomes they're discussing, so not the bad one, is the port of Dover collapsing on day 1, immediate food shortages and almost immediate petrol and medicine shortages - as in, no food in the supermarkets. It's in the Sunday Times. AIBU to start stockpiling?

Ooh, do I see some more volunteers for the Patriotic Leaver Non-Preparation Pledge?

"To demonstrate my cast-iron unswerving certainty that there will be not an iota of disruption of any kind post-Brexit I swear to keep nothing in stock for Independence Day - no food in freezer, not to save so much as a grain of rice or tin of beans, no packets of paracetamol, to have less than 1/4 tank of petrol, and less than £10 cash and the bare minimum in savings."

shinycat · 05/06/2018 19:23

Yeah I don't think I will bother. Load of hyperbole and utter nonsense to say Brexit will cause an Apocalypse, like SOME are making out. Wink

TheElementsSong · 05/06/2018 19:25

Is that a pledge? Grin

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 19:28

Maybe not a full blown apocalypse but real risk of food shortages for a few days and I don't want to go hungry Grin. I like my food

erudiostressed · 05/06/2018 19:31

It's silly people panic buying that cause shortages!!!' This reminds me of 80s when they said aids would wipe out the entire human race fast forward thirty years and we can manage the condition with medication in many cases. Don't buy into media sensationalism.

erudiostressed · 05/06/2018 19:33

I need to lose a few pounds anyway silver lining and all.

TheElementsSong · 05/06/2018 19:33

It's silly people panic buying that cause shortages!!!

Setting things aside gradually, several months in advance, does not usually meet the definition of "panic buying".

Pledge?

keyboardkate · 05/06/2018 19:34

How will medications be stopped from being imported?

Surely a no tariff regime will help. Honestly who wants Armageddon.

Something will be done to sort this shit out. Hysteria is becoming ridiculous. But as a Remainer, looking at the total lack of planning so far, I am not an idiot. But something will be done.

I reckon a very long transition period will happen. As you were, at ease.

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 19:35

Media sensationalism? You mean a government report?

I don't think anyone on here the day before brexit will rush to the supermarket and stock up and take everything off the shelves. They most likely, like I do, buy a few tins here and there, an extra bag of rice or pasta a week etc.

TheElementsSong · 05/06/2018 19:36

Oh, I thought of another aspect of my new motto:

"If we need a minimum of 19% oxygen to breathe and there is only 9.5% we can simply live on the other half. It won't hurt."

It makes me feel so optimistic about everything Smile

I'm a bit worried, the thread is almost full but by my count we have only two somewhat lukewarm agreements to Not Prepare, despite numerous posters happy to bang the hysteria drum.

It’s not hard is it? Type the usual thing about hysteria, then type something like "To demonstrate my cast-iron unswerving certainty that there will be not an iota of disruption of any kind post-Brexit I swear to keep nothing in stock for Independence Day - no food in freezer, not to save so much as a grain of rice or tin of beans, no packets of paracetamol, to have less than 1/4 tank of petrol, and less than £10 cash and the bare minimum in savings."

Ta-dah! Patriotic True BeLeaving Positive Public Online Leadership Duty done!

And you can go ahead and fill your loft with sacks of grain, because nobody here will know any different.

mummymeister · 05/06/2018 20:09

Theelementssong - oh you do like telling stupid people like me what to do and think don't you!

I have said I will not be doing anything to prepare for your mythical Armageddon. Just because I don't write your EXACT words it doesn't count?

I will be doing EXACTLY what I do now regards food in the cupboard, the freezer, money in my business account etc. exactly.

I don't call that lukewarm do you? Its 100% positive.

or do I need to write it in blood for you to believe it?

or perhaps take an exam to prove I am not an idiot.....

keyboardkate · 05/06/2018 20:21

There will be no Armageddon.

There may be a change of PM or at least a challenge soon though, although who would want to take on that mantle?

May is being played like a fiddle here, and although I have no time for her, she is not being well advised is she? I suppose her spouse tells her in pillow talk, but he cannot be seen to tell her IRL that this is not looking good for anyone.

But remember those in the Tory party like JRM and all the rest of them will not have to worry about Armageddon. They have ultimate means to avoid that. Unlike ordinary mortals.

Such a pity there is no opposition party now. Labour is fkd and floundering. The perfect storm no less.

TheElementsSong · 05/06/2018 20:22

Goodness me, don't be so grouchy, I wasn't grouchy or rude at you was I?

Do cheer up, your Sunlit Uplands are nigh!

singledadstu · 05/06/2018 20:25

Pledge ? Lol. How about remainers making one re all the hysteria they seem to be whipping up. It was a question that was put to public vote . The very slight majority said yes let’s go. It’s democracy, it may not be to your liking but keep slagging folk off and making out it’s the end of the world won’t make one iotas difference.
As for OP Aibu . No you’re not, you should imo have a least a few weeks food in your house anyway. NOT petrol though. Maybe another topic but I’d be asking the question “how much food does a normal household carry in its cupboards and freezer ?” I carry a fair bit and every month do a freezer “eat down” where I cook food from cupboards and freezer , the objective is emptying the freezer- defrosting it-cleaning it-filling it back up. My freezer is four small drawers.

frumpety · 05/06/2018 20:29

Just a quick thought for anyone out there who cares , if there are fuel shortages, fuel will be given out to essential services first , so police , fire brigade , NHS staff as in previous shortages. The problem is the care industry has been privatised, so a lot of day to day care is done by companies that are not part of the NHS or social services, what happens to the most vulnerable in society if the people looking after them are not able to travel to care for them ? If you have a relative who needs care visits , lets say 3x a day , would you be able to cover those if the carer is not able to get there due to fuel shortages ? What would happen if they are not able to get their ready meals delivered ? Or their shopping done ? Would your employer allow you to cover their needs for a week or two fully paid ?

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 20:30

I agree that brexit should happen as it was voted for.
What I don't like is being called stupid, hysterical etc for wanting to prepare for the possible situations that could occur.
The government report said there may be severe delays in food getting to shops and therefore I will add a little extra every now and again to my already big supply so that in an emergency I can survive.
If it doesn't happen then yes great! If it does then yes great I've got a large stock of food to see me through!

Frequency · 05/06/2018 20:32

Exactly enough to last my family until the next pay day. It's all some people can afford. Any price hike or supply delay will hit the most vulnerable hard.

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 20:33

It's like the government reporting there could be flooding. Would it be hysterical to prepare for that when there's a 50 50 chance? No. So I'm just doing the same. I already do have extra supplies to last around a month Grin but will add more as I do use them when needed anyway.

I think instead of name calling, we neednto understand everyone has differing opinions and different ideas. Mine is to get more food in yours is to do as normal and some is to laugh and mock.

babyno5 · 05/06/2018 20:34

kursk most “fresh” produce is stored in controlled atmosphere storage for up to 12 months anyway ie the Kentish Bradley apples currently on shelf just now were harvested last September.

keyboardkate · 05/06/2018 20:36

Seems to me that the Government squealers do not want Brexit at all. Nuff said!

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 20:41

Well I voted remain. But leave won. If I was really squealing and trying to stop brexit do you think I would be project managing the transfer of eu laws into uk stature.Hmm
