To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

So apparently we're now at very high risk of exiting the EU in March without a trade agreement with the EU. The government wanted to keep it secret, but it's been leaked that the middle of the 3 outcomes they're discussing, so not the bad one, is the port of Dover collapsing on day 1, immediate food shortages and almost immediate petrol and medicine shortages - as in, no food in the supermarkets. It's in the Sunday Times. AIBU to start stockpiling?

No one has accused me of being unpatriotic yet but accusing me of being a hysteric is a nice touch.
I prep generally for a number of scenarios. They may never happen, indeed I really hope not. But I don't want to be flailing around unable to manage should they happen. I have MS, my options to be flexible are more limited.

Snowflakeslayer · 05/06/2018 18:46

This is a joke thread.....right?

Anyhope · 05/06/2018 18:48

Remember the millenium fear? I will just get a few things in as do not and be good to stock up a bit in case of.. try not to let fear get better of you.. this may sound new agey but look on you tube, fear is what some people/dark energies feed off. Also whole system. With news etc. Need to raise vibration to love- that is what Pastor Curry said and royal wedding. Try you tube prayers/music 582 hz and get a few extra things but no need to panic. Also pray a lot that is what I do. regards/ blessings

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 05/06/2018 18:48

Not a joke unfortunately snowflakeslayer

Some people are genuinely worried that they'll be a delay in getting their imported food items like champagne and Brie and fois gras.

Beggers belief doesn't it.

MadeleineMaxwell · 05/06/2018 18:49

Labour's just come out with a new development - wanting internal market access. Essentially a remain or EEA position. Things are going to get very interesting now...

I give TM a week, two tops.

JJS888 · 05/06/2018 18:49

Lostinsunshine has really struck a chord. I don't want to diss something I don't know much about. I have been thinking a lot since reading that post and realised that I should probably give a bit more of a shit about people sometimes.

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 18:50

How are people being hysterical.
Did you read the report?
The UK has 3 days with of food in stock.
If we leave without a trade deal under the World trade group we have to check all lorries carrying goods when they enter the country.
This will cause massive delays of food coming into the country.
We don't have enough farms and food products to sustain ourselves.

So no it isn't hysterical. But hey carry on judging when we could possibly enter a catastrophic scenario

Kursk · 05/06/2018 18:51

If we import half our food from the EU and this doesn't come in we can simply live on the other half, our homegrown food. It won't hurt.

Awsome because March is the month everything is in season and there is a glut of fresh produce.

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 18:52

No I want basic food and water thanks Hmm

lostinsunshine · 05/06/2018 18:52

That's right, my only concern is not getting Brie and Champagne Grin. When we were snowed in with a small baby, that was all I could think of. When the power went out, my only care was champagne. None of this Somerset cava shite.

DarlingNikita · 05/06/2018 18:59

MadeleineMaxwell, where are you reading this, can you tell us?

Interesting indeed!

keyboardkate · 05/06/2018 19:00

This kind of thing will not happen.

But the threat and the fear of it will.

Hysteria is being whipped up now, but even little me as a Remainer can see that it is all manufactured for the masses.

Food etc. shortages are not on the menu. But the fear of it might work on some!

It is just ridiculous to think that people might have to stockpile for something that will not happen. No tariffs on imports from EU, sorted.

Our former hoarder neighbours poured stored petrol into their car . They had stored it during that blockade by tankers about 18 years ago. We didn’t know they had hoarded itShock. It ruined their engineGrin

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 19:05

It may not happen but I would rather have a couple weeks of food ready, some water stored, and a large bit if cash ready then be caught out if there's food shortages.

riceuten · 05/06/2018 19:05

Wouldn’t the government just not exit without a deal?

No, they would not- that’s kind of the problem

Kursk · 05/06/2018 19:07

Petrol doesn’t keep fresh for more than a few weeks. You must add a preservative to it. As mentioned previously on this thread we store abou 75L of petrol.

JJS888 · 05/06/2018 19:07

Please don't call people loons. Everyone has things they feel strongly about and its really unkind to laugh and name call.

riceuten · 05/06/2018 19:08

when we haven't starved to death, everything is the same & the next countries are leaving the EU

I actually have a wide circle of friends and some of them are moronic enough to think that countries are queuing up to do trade deal with us, and, if not, the blitz spirit will see us through.

Icanttakemuchmore · 05/06/2018 19:08

Good grief. Its people like you that will cause a panic and a shortage of everything! The day after brexit will be the same as the day before! Companies abroad will still need our business as much as before otherwise they'll go bust so stop panicking!

siwel123 · 05/06/2018 19:11

How if I start stocking now will I cause a shortage? I have nine months to do so.
Well it won't be the same will It?
We don't be in the world's biggest trading bloc that allows our businesses to do seamless trade with business in 27 other countries

MadeleineMaxwell · 05/06/2018 19:11

Sure Nikita, here you go: Laura Kuenssberg's tweet

Of course, now there's massive discussion about what the hell Corbyn actually means and why he's 3-line whipping against the EEA amendment...

It's all very confusing. I wish he'd just come out with a clear position. If Corbyn went full Remain, I'd hold my nose and vote for Labour again.

lostinsunshine · 05/06/2018 19:15

I don't "stockpile" petrol. I keep the tank no lower than half full.
I don't "stockpile " meds. We manage without so far despite my MS. Apart from a bit extra paracetamol/calpol/ibuprofen.
I do have extra food and water and the ability and equipment to heat them up with electricity. I have the means to heat rooms without electricity/gas. I have the means to light without electricity. I have the means to collect and purify water.
I have a camping loo which I can use as a composting loo if we need it.
I prep for a range of likely scenarios. An interrupted food supply when we finally leave the EU is just one of them.

QuizzlyBear · 05/06/2018 19:16

Love the way that @mummymeister asked for any examples of people's lives being adversely affected by the Brexit vote, gets plenty of responses outlining some awful outcomes... then happily ignores them.

Marvellous 'I'm alright Jack' attitude in action.

theDudesmummy · 05/06/2018 19:21

I don't buy into all the hysteria, but I treat inpatients who will become very very ill very very quickly without their medication, that does worry me a bit....
