To stockpile food, medicine and petrol?

So apparently we're now at very high risk of exiting the EU in March without a trade agreement with the EU. The government wanted to keep it secret, but it's been leaked that the middle of the 3 outcomes they're discussing, so not the bad one, is the port of Dover collapsing on day 1, immediate food shortages and almost immediate petrol and medicine shortages - as in, no food in the supermarkets. It's in the Sunday Times. AIBU to start stockpiling?

Oh and to address the actual point:
Self-fulfilling prophecy I reckon. They could also create a run on the banks if they started up enough rumours. It’s a dangerous (and very stupid) game.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 03/06/2018 21:33

Nahh, what you need to do is build a boat, to swim off the island when the zombies start spreading.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 03/06/2018 21:34

On the face of it YANBU OP.

I bought The Times but haven't had time to read the article! It seems the scenarios were put together by civil servants. I would love to have the full details. From skim reading it seems the article on The Times doesn't have the full details so it's hard to form an opinion.

Why do we even have this situation where there are secret reports anyway? I wish our government were honest and upfront about what the different Brexit options will mean. They think they are pulling it off but they really really aren't.

Racecardriver · 03/06/2018 21:34

Img guys. Start stick piling now! I grew up in a non-eu country. It was hellish I tell you! The better quality of life was killing me! But seriously, this is a gag thread right?

MissBartlettsconscience · 03/06/2018 21:37

What's really interesting about the article is that it's in the Sunday Times which is a very conservative and brexit leaning paper (the Times is more balanced, but conservative to centrist).

Sounds to me like it's trying to shore up old Tory support for a change in approach.

Thesearepearls · 03/06/2018 21:37

honestly, these lazy journos need to find something else to write about

You mean like scan through MN and then cut and paste a thread into the Daily Mail?

mummymeister · 03/06/2018 21:38

No CU and no SM is what I and many other people voted for and May knows it.

anyone holding out the hope that we are going to stay in either/both needs to take a look at what else is happening across the eu.

this is the last days of a negotiation. its always fraught. seen it all before and it will get sorted in the end.

I agree. stockpiling is just a self fulfilling prophesy. and I believe as many economic "experts" as you can fit on the head of a pin! for every one that says one thing there is someone else saying the polar opposite.

if they were that bloody brilliant and insightful, why didn't they predict the exit vote?

Same here Pinkball

Tambien · 03/06/2018 21:39

Honestly?
We will know ahead of time if we are in that scenario (of Just dropping into WTO rules).
If we do, I’ll leave the country for at least two weeks and see what happens.
I might not come back too.
But I’m not going to put my dcs through that sort of stress.

RomeoBunny · 03/06/2018 21:42

Hey OP... guess why Northern Rock collapsed and the start of the economic crash here in the UK? Because 24hr news channels bombarded every household in the country saying they were having problems so everyone went and withdrew their money. Guess what? They collapsed because everyone did just that.

Don't be a bellend. It's self fulfilling.

ohreallyohreallyoh · 03/06/2018 21:43

the day after Brexit, will be absolutely no different from the day before it

You can’t know that for sure. I am inclined to agree but we won’t know till it happens.

how many people honestly can say that their lives have radically and irrevocably changed since the Brexit vote?

Interesting question. More than you think, I expect.

Tambien · 03/06/2018 21:44

Btw the two weeks and no food?
That’s because therebis inly 3 days worth of food in stock (because shops are working in just in time). If the borders are talking hours and hours to get though, it won’t be possible to keep up with the stock.
Gas should be different (there is a pipeline).

Tbh none of that is new. This was said already and printed out as being a huge risk during the campaign. This is not scaremongering unfortunately.
But it is easier to say it’s just ‘Project fear’ rather than having to face that we might really be in the shit in a year’s time.

The problem with stock pilling is that you might be able to do that but it’s not going to last forever....

Tambien · 03/06/2018 21:46

the day after Brexit, will be absolutely no different from the day before it

It completely depends on how the U.K. is going to ‘leave’ but starting form the position that nothing will change is crazy. Things WILL change if the U.K. comes out wo an agreement wth the EU.

how many people honestly can say that their lives have radically and irrevocably changed since the Brexit vote?
Mine has.

lljkk · 03/06/2018 21:47

Most British people need to lose weight & drive a lot less, anyway.

lljkk · 03/06/2018 21:48

"the day after Brexit, will be absolutely no different from the day before it"

If that's true... then why did 52% vote for Leave? They wanted CHANGE, no? What did they vote for if things won't change. Confused

QuoadUltra · 03/06/2018 21:49

They were wargaming. They were wargaming. They were wargaming

mummymeister · 03/06/2018 21:49

ohreally - well I was rather hoping that someone would come on the thread and tell me how its affected them dramatically because I know a fair few people in business, friends, acquaintances and so far haven't found anyone that can point to a tangible effect.

Actually, I am sure it will be the same. I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever. yes, there will be changes in the months to come. but that is what I voted for - change. so I am expecting changes and instead of feeling doom and gloom about them am looking forward to the new challenges.

PolkaHots · 03/06/2018 21:50

Collapse? What, like Venice? Confused

NotARegularPenguin · 03/06/2018 21:51

Just make sure you stockpile it upstairs because zombies can’t climb stairs!

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 21:51

Well house prices have dropped since the brexit vote for a start

BG2015 · 03/06/2018 21:53

According to my DP crude oil comes via tanker into different areas of the U.K. by sea and goes straight to refineries. As far as he knows Europe isn't involved in our oil supplies.

So stockpiling petrol isn't really needed.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 03/06/2018 21:55

Ive got like 4 bags of penne and three tins of tuna. Im fucked

Ive also got 4 easter eggs left, big ones, i will barter them for magic beans and booze

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 21:55

Oh dear bg2015 - your ignorance and your dp’s ignorance is shocking

OfaFrenchmind2 · 03/06/2018 21:56

NotARegularPenguin they can! Better advice: store everything upstairs, burn the stairs, and get a good climbing rope. They cannot climb a rope.

expatinscotland · 03/06/2018 21:56

Don't be ridiculous.
