To think rapists do not belong in women’s prisons

I know it’s already happened but seems there are other violent male prisoners hoping to move to female prisons. I’d really like to hear what female prisoners feel about this as the article claims many feel intimidated. This just seem absolutely crazy that this is happening - is there no though or concern all for the women prisoners? I just can’t get my head around this logic.

There are very few cases of this and the prisons keep them in isolation. It is very difficult to manage the risk otherwise. I know people working in female prisons who are very anti self ID for this very reason

puckingfixies · 03/06/2018 11:07

YANBU OP, the world has gone mad. Prisoners who have committed sexual or violent offences against women/children do not belong in the female estate, prisoners with penises do not belong in the female estate.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/06/2018 11:11

YANBU OP.
I think it's utterly unconscionable and I am appalled that as a supposedly civilised society we are locking up women with rapists.
It's like something out of the 18th century.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/06/2018 11:11

Yanbu

You can't use your penis to take someone then expect us to believe you wish you never had one as your a woman Hmm

Being a man didn't bother you when you were committing a crime that in UK law is specifically committed by men.

rosesandflowers · 03/06/2018 13:31

Well, surely women (cis or otherwise) would go to women's prisons?

I imagine there are precautions in all prisons to ensure rapists can't assault any of the other prisoners.

Oldbutstillgotit · 03/06/2018 13:34

Any prisoner with a penis should be in a male prison .

user1471447863 · 03/06/2018 15:01

Or maybe don't break the law and end up in prison (woman's or otherwise) and this won't be an issue for you. It's not that hard not to break the law to the extent that you actually get a custodial sentence - many millions of people manage not to got to jail every day.

CaptainBrickbeard · 03/06/2018 15:05

User, I don’t think rape is an acceptable punishment for any crime, therefore whilst I intend to never break the law and end up in prison, I cannot support the inclusion of rapists in women’s prisons anyway. It’s called basic human compassion and decency rather than a narrow-minded myopic focus on oneself only and to hell with everybody else.

PeanutButterSquash · 03/06/2018 15:06

I'm a transwoman,
I and every transwoman I've ever spoken to about it (a sample size of around 8) experienced extreme disgust towards their male genitals.
I hated touching it, even to pee. The thought of masturbating made me feel sick and I never penetrated anybody with it (consented or otherwise).
I cannot imagine anyone who is actually transgender or transsexual would do this (or keep their penis longer than necessary, or decide after being convicted that they are a Transwoman).

YANBU.

MoistCantaloupe · 03/06/2018 15:09

What a wonderful solution User, how clever you are.

BuntyII · 03/06/2018 15:10

YANBU. NO woman should be forced to share a living space with a violent male.

applecatchers36 · 03/06/2018 15:12

YANBU

QueenOfQuacks · 03/06/2018 15:13

FFS if they are in isolation anyway then why does this need to be in the women's estate?

Isolation is isolation so can't they just be isolated in a male prison?

It's almost like it's all about validation of their identity Confused

Which means, I believe, that you are a transwoman with gender dysphoria? I have never considered those people who used to be called transsexuals a threat. I have a very different opinion on the TRA types who have every intention of keeping their penis, and carrying on using it. Indeed, I think transwomen with actual gender dysphoria are one of the groups being thrown under the bus by the TRAs. Along with lesbians, gays, autistic children, women and girls in general...

PeanutButterSquash · 03/06/2018 15:39

Yes I have gender dysphoria and I do feel absolutely thrown under the bus by TRA's, it's all about them. I have had quite a few run ins with TRA's and I'm shut down, too. Despite being a transwoman for decades my experiences do not matter as they don't fit the narrative.
To TRA's I'm "truscum" a traitor, a whole host of nasty insults and I'll never forget the time I was told that I had to "check my cisprivilege". I laughed for days...

20pencepiece · 03/06/2018 16:55

I wonder if Maria Miller still believes in gender self ID?

I hope this article makes people realise the consequence will be that predatory men will be able to invade any women's spaces. The prison situation is appalling because the authorities, who are meant to protect vulnerable people, are throwing women under a bus.

Thank you for your support Peanut butter.

'Cis'? Bugger off.

rosesandflowers · 03/06/2018 20:21

My understanding is that most people don't undergo a biological sex change due to financial issues, but there can be a reason. My DD knew a trans boy with a horrific fear of surgery. He was vomiting and shaking through panic attacks due to his dysphoria, but mention of surgery and he'd begin a similar attack. (It turned out his grandmother had died in some kind of organ transplant, and that kickstarted a fear of surgery that soon became a phobia.)

Before hearing one of the panic attacks I had always felt a little confused as to why trans people didn't just get surgery if they were financially able. After that I decided it was most definitely not my position to judge. I know that many people, especially after they are "passing" feel more of a discomfort than a full on disgust/panic attack that would make surgery a more stressful experience than it's worth.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe that someone would undergo all the discrimination associated with being trans for no reason, let alone a large group of people.

rosesandflowers · 03/06/2018 20:21
  • can be another reason, sorry. Financial issues are obviously a legitimate reason in their own right.
FranticallyPeaceful · 03/06/2018 20:24

Usually people like this are put on a “vulnerable people’s” wing and separated from the gen-pop. At least it’s how it works in male prisons

HemanOrSheRa · 03/06/2018 20:28

Oh! That's a good idea user. On the other hand you may want to look at the stats behind the reasons WHY women go to prison and their backgrounds.

Caribou58 · 03/06/2018 20:31

Honestly, I find it hard to believe that someone would undergo all the discrimination associated with being trans for no reason, let alone a large group of people.

There are currently 34 sex offenders in UK prisons who 'identify as trans'. Some have already been moved to women's prisons. If self-id becomes law, they cannot be kept in isolation in such women's prisons.

One of these offenders in the 34 is Ian Huntley...

That’s interesting - do you have a reference for that?
