AIBU?

To be fed up of female pop stars always performing in pants/leotards?

Ok I know a woman can wear whatever she wants, but why does it seem mandatory for female artists to wear nothing but pants/variations thereof on their bottom half?! Confused

Sadly the liberals have worn us down and no one has any pride or morals these days.

I have an 18 year old DD who is a ballet dancer. She will often pop to tesco wearing a leotard and a hoodie- so basically knickers

You know this is different though, right?

Lifebeginsatgin The liberals? Who are they then? The people who don’t think they have the right to tell women they should cover themselves up? The people who don’t dictate to other people what they should do, how they should act, why they should wear? The people whose idea of ‘morals’ isn’t to judge other people?

Please fuck off back to the dark ages.

They showed a Big Weekend set by Christine and the Queens last night. She managed a dance routine in baggy trousers and a vest top. So, it’s not the dancing that makes a leotard necessary.

I don’t have a problem with them dressing in virtually nothing but I do wonder why skimpy clothing only applies to women. Shorts for men and shorts for women for example.

Suggesting that more revealing women have no pride or morals is vile.

When i was a dancer, it was leotards for rehearsals only, apart from certain routines, but always with black tights. We never wore clothes with the intention of showing as much flesh as possible, as some do now.

I’m so fucking sick of women keeping other women in check and then blaming the ‘patriarchy’.

“No! You can’t wear that. You only think it looks good because you’ve been conditioned to think that by the patriarchy. Now run home and don a shroud”

Greenvalleys I think you and I were probably different types of dancers.

Arr, I've found a liberal in SinkWinkit's only ever one or the other with you lot. Telling me to F off is the stock reply isn't it? You shut down debate by insulting anyone with an alternative view.

Don't you think it's worrying that 6year olds are watching the like of Taylor Swift prancing around in next to nothing and always have a new boyfriend from one week to the next. It's a shame role models don't have any morals.

Great argument. I mean, it's not like there's been God knows how many centuries/decades of patriarchial, sexist, misogynistic shit that women have been forced to deal with, so that we don't even bloody notice it anymore and hand the same old low-bar expectations on to the next generation, is it?

Oh. Hang on.

But yes. Blame women. In fact, specifically blame the women who want to shift a little nearer to some semblance of equality for the next generation. They're the really bad ones.

They're performers. It's their job to attract attention in a highly competitive market.

So, for women, that means...taking off their clothes?

The idea that TS - with her multi million $ record deal - would be allowed to decide to wear whatever she likes is laughable

Taylor Swift’s Dad is one of the owners of her record company so she actually does have way more autonomy than most.

So you think applying some critical thinking to how women are treated is a bad idea? Why?

It’s not about policing what women wear. It’s about looking a bit deeper than the clothes.

Sorry if this has been said before but I don't have a problem with women performing in very little clothing but when they're pressing their breasts up to their chin and girating sexually and their target audience are teenage girls I wonder why on earth they need to do that. My DDs wouldn't not listen to their music if they covered up

Little Mix, I'm talking about you!

Their target audience isn’t teenage girls. Have you heard some of the lyrics on their last album?

TacoLover · 28/05/2018 12:27

This keeps coming up. It isn't the job of singers to cover up or change what they do because of younger fans.

ShesgotBetteDavieseyes why is it different?

Because it's not about the ratio of clothes to flesh. It's not about nipping to Tesco in a dance leotard and hoodie. There's nothing shameful about the human body. Leotards for dance, shorts in summer, bikini at the beach etc....all fine, obviously.

Selling/exploiting a woman's nakedness or lack of clothes, selling the sexualised/half naked image as a commodity, and for that to be so normalised that half of this thread, on what is still largely a female forum, are saying, 'what's the problem?' THAT'S the problem.

Or the difference, to answer your question.

I would say it is. Their concerts aren't full of teenage boys or adult men.

Wtf is actually so wrong with selling the image of not wearing many clothes? I hardly think Little Mix are forced .
If you don’t like it, no ones asking you to do it?
Why does someone’s body and choice of attire affect you so much?

Little Mix look great. This isn’t a bloody recent thing, we had the Spice Girls doing the same, even in underwear on magazines. I’m sure they wanted to look shit hot and why not?

Nanny0gg · 28/05/2018 13:40

But why is it that the only way women can be considered attractive is if they're wearing very little and have to be waxed hairless?

Why is it that there is no chance of succeeding in the music business if you're female unless you're extremely attractive and can look good in next to nothing? No woman can just be judged on how good a singer/musician she is any more.

Wtf is actually so wrong with selling the image of not wearing many clothes?
Because it perpetuates the idea that women and girls are primarily valued for their looks/sexiness.

I hardly think Little Mix are forced

They don’t exist in a vacuum. Are you suggesting they aren’t subject to massive industry and societal pressure to look a particular way?

If you don’t like it, no ones asking you to do it?
I don’t like the message it sends out, particularly to pre teen and teen girls.
Why does someone’s body and choice of attire affect you so much?
It doesn’t. But let’s not pretend there is no objectification in the music industry, which does affect me, and every other woman.

Little Mix look great.
I don’t think looking great depends on your clothes.

This isn’t a bloody recent thing, we had the Spice Girls doing the same, even in underwear on magazines
Yeah, it’s almost as though this objectification thing has been going on for a while, isn’t it? It’s not getting any better, I agree.

I’m sure they wanted to look shit hot and why not?

Again, I don’t think looking shit hot has anything to do with clothes.

Why does someone’s body and choice of attire affect you so much?

Because women being viewed, treated and sold as a sexualised commodity without any question, because That's Just How It Is is a massive problem that affects every woman, all of the time. Those attitudes are insidious and incredibly harmful.

It affects me, my daughters, sons, sisters, aunts, friends...I could go on, but I need a break from this thread as it's doing my bloody head it.
