AIBU?

To be fed up of female pop stars always performing in pants/leotards?

Ok I know a woman can wear whatever she wants, but why does it seem mandatory for female artists to wear nothing but pants/variations thereof on their bottom half?! Confused

I miss Banarama, the days of dressing like a painter and decorator on Top of the Pops are sadly gone

Taylor is known for having legs for days though so it’s understandable she flaunt it. Just like jlo and Nicki are know for their asses, Michelle Obama is known for her arms so wear sleeveless dresses, Cher is all about the hair, Angelinas lips, Beyoncé’s curves etc.

It’s making the most of their best assets. I quite like my tits so tend to wear low cut tops.

Lily Allen is currently doing the rounds wearing no underwear at all.

But it's ok because she has a really nicely trimmed minge.

I feel empowered now.

Sex and music has always gone hand in hand. Don't see the problem. It's always been rebellious. Sure there are worse things than a bit of leg on show.

With regards to Little Mix they are regularly slut shamed for wearing 'skimpy' outfits in the sense that they are literally called sluts and whores for showing their thighs by men. And when they do cover up they're called boring and unsexy. Women just can't win really. And have any of you actually watched their performances? There's a great deal of dancing that goes on which means that they would need to be in short clothing.

I agree inherently OP. I have 4 DD’s and this is something I’m frequently left unsure how to tackle. Another thing which doesn’t sit right with me is how over sexualised the dancing and lyrics are in most female pop songs today.

I know a lot of it goes straight over kids’ heads, but my eldest DD (7) has a friend who is really into music and when she comes over to play the girls often have ‘dance-offs’. This friend always imitates music videos and dances in a way which I can’t help but feel is far too sexualised for their age group- think lots of hands on hips, bum ‘twerking’, rubbing her hands up and down her body.

Now I know I’m likely to get flamed for this because people would argue that a child dancing is innocent and I’m the one with the problem, but it just makes me feel very uncomfortable. My daughter isn’t very into music so doesn’t really watch music videos and so dances in a much more innocent way and so maybe I’m frumpy and outdated in my views.

I just said to my daughter 'Oh look, Taylor's forgotten to put her skirt on. Probably a bit late to tell her now -she's been dancing about in her knickers for the last 10 minutes.'
Got an eye roll, but I'll stop commenting on it the day Ed Sheeran comes on and performs in a pair of Y fronts.

It's ok if it's their choice to dress like that, but I think there's pressure from the music industry bosses who are probably men to dress in a revealing way as sex sells

I agree re. Little Mix. It just seems as though it's their management who decided they should go for this sexy look and they don't always look comfortable with it. Beyonce on the other hand, looks totally right in her stage uniforms because it seems she's the one calling the shots.

Also IHaveBrilloHair there is literally no evidence that this is required of them. I used to think that this wasn't their choice until I did some research and I noticed that there are a lot more people telling them to cover up than people actually admiring them.

If this is genuinely the reason, why the high heels?

It just doesn't sit right with me to look at how women's clothing has been policed by men for centuries and then see women themselves criticizing how much skin another woman decides to show.

Pretty sure I've watched the ballet where it's full coverage tights under the leotard plus skirt combo. But ballet is just dance not sex sells dance.

Smile Each Day if you can learn to dance in high heels then over time it doesn't hinder your performance(these women have obviously learnt how) however with more clothing that will always make it harder when doing something very active.

For clarity, I’m not criticising any woman for what they choose to wear. I’m criticising an industry that promotes the objectification of women, and markets that aggressively towards girls. Ok?

Oh I love Taylor, I hope she's not going down that road, it does get annoying when it seems there's only a couple of exceptions

Cameo and his codpiece are from 30 years ago.

@tacolover - because presumably the predominantly male music execs are still telling these women how to dress 🙄

OP I was very pleasantly surprised to see Sigrid on Sunday brunch perform without makeup and in jeans and a t-shirt! I thought what a fabulous role model!!!

When I was young and hot, I wore not much and I wasn’t a pop star.
I thought Taylor Swift looked amazing. Ds did say why are her butt cheeks out? I just replied because that’s what she wanted to wear.
