To be fed up of female pop stars always performing in pants/leotards?

Ok I know a woman can wear whatever she wants, but why does it seem mandatory for female artists to wear nothing but pants/variations thereof on their bottom half?! Confused

Free Mantle well for one, ballet is a lot slower and controlled so theyre a lot less likely to become too sweaty from a lot of action like Little Mum's 'dance breaks' are. I say this as a ballet teacher actually so I know what I'm talking about.
Also sex appeal has always been a part of the music industry. Shawn Mendes is regularly shirtless and I get why Ed Sheeran wouldn't, because in my personal opinion I don't think he would sell sex very well. But if a woman wants to be sexy for her own benefit why should you judge her?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 20:53

Freddie Mercury frequently pranced around in very tight trousers and bare chested and I'm fairly certain George Michael and Andrew Ridgley sported some very short shorts at some point. I don't know if I agree that it is always to do with appealing to men. No matter how sexy Little Mix look they really are only going to appeal to younger girls. I actually think males are more interested in the music rather than the look. girls are more likely to be swayed by looks hence when I took my daughter to see Bieber it was predominantly girls aged 14 -20 in attendance

Herbalteahippie · 27/05/2018 20:53

What is it that bothers you about sexy outfits? I love them personally and I love dressing up! X

Ihatebuildabear · 27/05/2018 20:53

Watching it now. Paloma faith is in a long dress. No leotard.

Ihatebuildabear · 27/05/2018 20:53

Oh No sorry. Trousers and long sleeved top.

TacoLover · 27/05/2018 20:57

The problem obviously is that the music industry wants to sell sex SmileAnotherDay I wasn't denying that. But when people say 'oh look Little Mix are dancing in their underwear again' which is often the case, this implies that the women are at fault and should cover up because what they are wearing(or not wearing) annoys them. This makes me uncomfortable.

Also yes, after dancing in heels for a year it becomes easy. Practice works wonders obviously and Little Mix have obviously had a lot of it.

Argeles · 27/05/2018 20:59

I’m totally sick of this too op, and the situation has been getting worse and worse in recent years.

So many of the music videos are like soft porn in regard to the poses, dance moves, scenarios and make up and clothes (I use the word clothes lightly).

I refuse to watch these ‘music’ videos anymore, and I really despair for my Daughters who I’ll try my best to shield from all of this shit, but who will be able to access these videos easily online.

bbcessex · 27/05/2018 21:05

I agree OP - it honestly depresses me to have female vocal talent and ability only widely recognised if it’s highly sexualised.

Little Mix are a real let down for me; they are fabulous and had an opportunity to change things, potentially.. but no, they’ve gone down the knicker-wearing, dominatrix garb approach.

Bloody depressing that women are still (having to?) using sex to sell, even though they are talented .

FreeMantle · 27/05/2018 21:06

How can you be sexy for your own benefit?

bbcessex · 27/05/2018 21:08

Little Mix barely clothed - boy band on same record, dressed for the shops... 😡

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/05/2018 21:10

It just doesn't sit right with me to look at how women's clothing has been policed by men for centuries and then see women themselves criticizing how much skin another woman decides to show

But frequently they aren't 'deciding,' although you'll never read that in any interviews. They will be 'empowered in their own sexuality,' naturally.

I find it incredible that no matter what the arguments are, how much we tell ourselves that 'we're just being sexy for us,' this semi-mythical 'empowerment' etc. etc. etc., it's STILL just women who aren't wearing many clothes. A few decades back, it was just about being sexy/attractive/whatever. Right now, it's because 'it's empowering.' It's always the same though. Women without clothes.

This latest rebrand of Man's Right to Watch Half Naked Women is horrible. It's the same inequality dressed up with phrases like 'feminism' and 'empowerment.'

Yes, there are the odd exceptions with a few stripped-to-the-waist men, but it's disingenuous to pretend that there is any equality on this issue whatsoever.

It remains vital for women in certain jobs to be seen as sexually attractive in a way that is not imposed on men. It's so easy to say 'well, thats how it's always been,' as though we should never try to change it.

Actually, this: Male gaze
Women are only worth something if they're sexy
Patriarchy

sums it up better than my attempt.

SmileEachDay · 27/05/2018 21:14

Yup. And in its current form MRTWHNW is being directly sold to pre teens.

Great. Good job.

nancy75 · 27/05/2018 21:15

Taylor swift’s target market is young girls & gay men - did you see the crowd?
My DD is a huge Taylor fan & I know more about the woman than I care to. From what I’ve learnt I don’t think anyone is telling her what to wear, she micro manages every aspect of her stage performances ( right down to confetti printed with her face) if she’s wearing something, it’s because she wants to wear it.

bbcessex · 27/05/2018 21:18

Nancy - I think you might be right..but why do you think that is and what message is she putting across?

BonnieF · 27/05/2018 21:19

Eye candy isn’t gender or sexuality specific...

To be fed up of female pop stars always performing in pants/leotards?
melodybirds · 27/05/2018 21:21

Ihatebuildabear paloma was in a catsuit/leaotard that was semi see through.

freemantle you can be sexy for yourself and enjoy wearing sexy clothes. It's fun.

BonnieF · 27/05/2018 21:21

This one’s even better Shock

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 21:24

I actually don't think that sex does sell music tbh. Most men and teenage boys I know may say something along the lines of Jessie from Little Mix is well fit, but they hate their music, don't purchase or download it and wouldn't be seen dead at their concerts. For them it really is the music that counts be that The Foo Fighters, Shawn Mendes or Chopin.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/05/2018 21:27

This is a totally ridiculous argument - pop stars dancing in their pants is not necessary, end of. Nor is it necessary for female gymnasts to wear leotards. Male gymnasts wear trunk type suits, usually with tights or joggers. I was chatting to a young woman who competed in a gymnastics event recently and she was saying she hated the leotard, having to shave her bikini line and worrying about the leotard going up her arse. I don’t see why women can’t compete wearing similar shorts/leggings to men.

specialsubject · 27/05/2018 21:29

a glimpse of this earlier (before a dive for the remote, what a shrieky racket)/produced a joint cry of ' that birds got no strides on' !

someone mentioned dancing in jeans. Ariana Grande did it for the fundraiser, plus ridiculous heels. can be done.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 27/05/2018 21:30

if she’s wearing something, it’s because she wants to wear it

It's always striking how many women 'choose' to wear barely any clothes, isn't it? Not too many jogging bottoms and baggy tops at that end of the market. Or jeans and a sweatshirt/tee shirt, like many of the audience will actually be wearing.

She might 'want' to wear it, but she knows the industry inside out and knows the expectations and perimeters that she's 'deciding' within.

I would always support a women's choice to wear what she wants without judgement, but to pretend our choices can be safely isolated from decades of sexism, objectification and expectation is again, somewhat disingenuous.

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 21:32

The heels and dancing comments. I did ballroom and Latin dancing for years from about 6 years old, heels are pretty standard. You honestly do get used to them and to this day I find it easier to dance in heels than flats. I imagine with training a lot of these dancers and singers are the same.

nancy75 · 27/05/2018 21:33

I think Taylor Swifts message is that she’ll do what she wants & at the moment a black hoody & a leotard is what she wants to wear! She not know for being a particularly sexy/provocative performer ( watch most of her videos, she’s usually fairly covered up & taking the piss out of herself)
Little Mix are a very different thing - they are clearly styled to look the way they do & they often look very uncomfortable with it.
Having seen both Little Mix & Taylor S live I would say LM are much more provocative & unsuitable for their target market. It’s clear that they do not have the clout to say no to whoever is styling them

Fruitcorner123 · 27/05/2018 21:33

I’m sure she isn’t shoe horned into it against her wishes

maybe she is but even if she isn't she is groomed into thinking it's normal and a necessary oartt of her job. Islt isnt, she has a fab voice and would sell records if she wore jeans
