To be fed up of female pop stars always performing in pants/leotards?

Ok I know a woman can wear whatever she wants, but why does it seem mandatory for female artists to wear nothing but pants/variations thereof on their bottom half?! Confused

Taco

I agree that it’s not helpful to use derogatory language about how women dress.

I find the lack of critical thinking enormously frustrating - “high heels are brilliant for high energy gymnastic dance routines“ “TS decides on her outfits”. The refusal to look at the influences and pressures on women is infuriating.

There are posters on this thread who are completely denying the objectification of women in the music industry. The idea that TS - with her multi million $ record deal - would be allowed to decide to wear whatever she likes is laughable. As a PP said, it’s free will as long as that will agrees that pants are the at forward.

Objectification is a thing. We do our young people a disservice if we deny that.

TheDrinksAreOnMe · 28/05/2018 07:50

As someone who performs in bras, shorts shorter than your knickers, heels and leotards, i feel good in them? The heels are easy to perform in? I’m really not for the male gaze, it’s the last thing I think of. Being on stage for even 5 minutes can be roasting with the pressure, moves and the lighting.

I also can’t fucking stand seeing the word stripper being used as a derogatory term on mumsnet.

nancy75 · 28/05/2018 07:58

Taylor swift, on stage in outfits she’s forced to wear?

I do wonder if it's as much about the suppression of the female gaze.

As women are more open about they enjoyment of male flesh on stage we will have increasingly naked male popstars.

speakout · 28/05/2018 08:07

I can't get worked up about this I'm afraid.

I have an 18 year old DD who is a ballet dancer. She will often pop to tesco wearing a leotard and a hoodie- so basically knickers.

She - and I don't give a shit.

icelollycraving · 28/05/2018 08:08

Taylor Swift is like most young women in the respect she likes to try new looks and experiment with fashion. She is v girl next door for one track and an absolute siren for another. If she wants to (or anyone) wear pvc knickers, then why not?
I said earlier in the thread that ds asked why her butt cheeks were out. Frankly any excuse he gets to say butt with me shouting “bottom not butt” he will run with it Grin
She looked bloody amazing.
Rita Ora also had a really high cut stage outfit. Frankly I was just marvelling at how flat their stomachs were! Mine has never been like that. I like cake, wine and my sofa too much.

The80sweregreat · 28/05/2018 08:16

On X factor the girls have leotards the men normally keep their coats on.
The presenter yesterday told Taylor swift she needed a shower after her performance at the big weekend show. She didn’t seem impressed!

Saturdayselling · 28/05/2018 08:33

I'm with you OP. Watching this stuff now that I have small kids makes it seem newly depressing and oppressive actually. I don't want my kids to soak in the implicit message about the role of women and the male gaze. I don't have long left where I'm the boss of what they see though.

It's extraordinarily depressing that this is worse now than when I was watching Top Of The Pops.

SoupDragon · 28/05/2018 08:49

I thought Taylor Swift found the shower comment amusing.

The80sweregreat · 28/05/2018 08:53

Soup - she shook it off- She did look a bit shocked at first though - how dare they say the swift was sweaty!
It is depressing that they feel they have to perform in such attire although a few artists I watched on the weekend were fully clothed.

SuburbanRhonda · 28/05/2018 08:59

Male pop stars don't do a lot of dancing generally

Have you seen the Korean boy band BTS? Their dancing is amazing and they manage to keep all their clothes on.

Jaxtellerswife · 28/05/2018 09:12

If it's something they want to do then it's fine. There's nothing wrong with wanting to appear attractive to some. The important thing is they have the right to do it and some of them take that option

TopBitchoftheWitches · 28/05/2018 09:24

I thought TS chose a good outfit, she must have been so hot !

greenvalleys · 28/05/2018 09:32
Not a leotard in sight, but how much more attractive. Mind you, when you've got talent, what else do you need.
Funkyslippers · 28/05/2018 09:41

Sorry if this has been said before but I don't have a problem with women performing in very little clothing but when they're pressing their breasts up to their chin and girating sexually and their target audience are teenage girls I wonder why on earth they need to do that. My DDs wouldn't not listen to their music if they covered up

Little Mix, I'm talking about you!

Writersblock2 · 28/05/2018 09:42

Bloody hell, this thread is depressing. I’m amazed some people live in choosey choice empowerment bubble.

Skarossinkplunger · 28/05/2018 10:03

Because it is far easier to move around in.

Because using a plain leotard/ knickers is easy to add things to/ take things off and can make for a quick wardrobe change mid-set.

High-heels make your legs look longer and add some height making you easier to see on stage. Women wear them everyday to look good and being on stage is no different.

Because they can. These women work hard to lol this good and if I looked like that I’d walk around naked.

hollyholightly · 28/05/2018 10:04

I knew I was getting old when I sucked my lips over my teeth at what pop stars were wearing rather than desperately trying to copy the look.

fonteynmargot · 28/05/2018 10:05

Yes imperfectpirourette at ballet teacher saying ballet dancers never break out into a sweat! Grin I loved your post - thank you.

Echobelly · 28/05/2018 10:08

I've realised I don't so much mind named pop starts being scantily clad - they have a name and their own story, so they're not just 'tits and arse'.

I think what I like less in pop videos is those sort of cheesy Eurotrance once that are full of anonymous gyrating girlies in skimpy stuff, just being used as props, essentially.

But either way it's not a great example to young children... I have heard of young kids noticing that men have all their clothes on and women don't in pop videos.

greenvalleys · 28/05/2018 10:11

skaross I DID used to look like that, but i never felt the need to show it off. There's loads of clothes suitable for dancing round in, but do you really think what they wear is just so it's easier to move around in? ....Hmm

TacoLover · 28/05/2018 10:16

fonteynmargot I didn't say that they never broke into a sweat. Also the tradition of ballet and how strict it is means that dancers will rarely stray from the traditional tights and covered clothing. But when you are a 'popstar' you are expressing yourself in any way you want to. Women shouldn't be pressured into being sexual when they don't want to but that doesn't mean that Lm should cover up or whatever to protect your daughters self esteem.

TacoLover · 28/05/2018 10:19

funkyslippers everyone keeps suggesting that their music is marketed towards teenage girls. The subject of their music and videos suggests otherwise. Would anyone care to actually explain how they encourage young girls to be like them and listen to their music?

Skarossinkplunger · 28/05/2018 10:33

Greenvalkeys Yes, I used to be a dancer in a commercial dance troupe. I much preferred the outfits that were leotards, when we had to wear jeans, it god forbid skirts it was a nightmare.

Saturdayselling · 28/05/2018 10:54

writersblock can I offer you a virtual high five? Choosey choice is fucking funny and spot on.
