AIBU Furious SIL asked me to leave BBQ because of impetigo

I am so embarrassed and angry. Bank holiday weekend bbq is big deal in my family every year - we all make different dishes to take, there's bouncy castle and games and a cocktail bar.

I've got impetigo. I told DM and DF this - it's their bbq - and they didn't seem bothered so I made the dishes I'd been asked to make and turned up for the bbq today.

SIL went mad when she realised I have impetigo and wouldn't let them put the dishes I made out and basically caused a scene in front of my parents and dbro and my dp insisting that I leave. Luckily before all the other guests arrived or that would have been even more embarrassing. She wasn't shouting or anything but she made me feel like a right idiot.

In the end I did leave - with the food I had spent ages making! What a waste. And had to miss out on the day that I'd been looking forward to for ages. It's not even that contagious!

I’m calling reverse

Frosty66612 · 27/05/2018 19:08

I used to get it a lot as a child and would have to have 2-3 weeks off school each time as the school wouldn’t let me be around the other kids due to how contagious it was. It was horrible and left me with some scarring around my mouth and under my nose

Cheby · 27/05/2018 19:08

Oops, see I’m not the first. Should have RTFT.

HeedMove · 27/05/2018 19:08

Oh poor you missing the bbq! Grow up.

Daddystepdaddy · 27/05/2018 19:08

Highly contagious although usual not a severr disease but why risk it? Is anyone in your family diabetic or immunosupressed? That would make it riskier.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 27/05/2018 19:09

Last time my DD had Impetigo. She had 2 days off school and antibiotic cream before they'd let her return.

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 19:09

Surely nobody goes to a BBQ with a contagious disease?? Didn't your Dr tell you how contagious you were. I would be fuming if I found out that either myself or dd had eaten food made by you. So unhygenic.

Abra1de · 27/05/2018 19:09

It seems an over the top reaction unless the bits of infected skin were actually dropping off into the food (!) or people weren’t washing hands before preparing food. Or someone immunosuppressed or very young or old was there.

Of course you wouldn’t go to work or school, but a family meal?

My daughter sometimes gets impetigo when stressed and none of the rest of us have ever had it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/05/2018 19:10

What point are you at? Are you taking antibiotics or letting the infection run it’s course? Is is recurrent or is this a one off?

You are not supposed to prepare food for people. Let alone be around vulnerable people.

What were you thinking? Do you seriously want to give this shit to someone else ?

NorthernKnickers · 27/05/2018 19:11

Very, very unreasonable...and inconsiderate. You are also behaving like a child with some of your responses on here 🙄

AthenaAshton · 27/05/2018 19:11

@MiddleClassProblem Grin

happypoobum · 27/05/2018 19:11

YABVVU

Utterly selfish and stupid behaviour OP. Why on earth did you think this would be OK? Do you just not give a shit so long as you get your way?

Abra1de · 27/05/2018 19:12

obviously it was treated and we washed sheets and towels particularly thoroughly, etc.

Orchidflower1 · 27/05/2018 19:13

My betting is chicken pox poster has found another skin disease to take to a party.

So op are you
A) a pox ridden, impetigo suffering teenager who should be revising ( your biology gcse is bound to get a 9 if skin conditions come up)

B) just an incredibly stupid and selfish parents who still pander to her adult whims

Any bets anyone?!!

AthenaAshton · 27/05/2018 19:13

@MiddleClassProblem my Grin was at your chicken pox comment...

Orchidflower1 · 27/05/2018 19:14
  • and have patents who pander to your whims- see the stupidity of your actions is affecting my typing!
ScrubTheDecks · 27/05/2018 19:14

I would have given you a very wide berth, and not eaten the food you prepared, told my family to likewise keep away and been furious with you.

I have many times been furious with my SIL who brings her kids ill and infectious to family events and even to visit people in hospital. ("aaaa, awwww, they didn't want to miss seeing her...."

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 19:15

AthenaAshton I think they’d be a better suited family for OP

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 19:15

How exactly did SIL handle it badly? She wasn't shouting, so basically she told you that it was wrong for you to be there and the food you had prepared couldn't be eaten. That doesn't sound like handling it badly. If you were invited and the hosts weren't bothered about your impetigo they should have had the courtesy to inform the other guests so they could decide if they wanted to attend or not.

GinUnicorn · 27/05/2018 19:16

I think your SIL was right here. It's not right to risk other people's health.

Get better soon.

MoodyMumOfOne · 27/05/2018 19:16

What a wally Hmm

Shiftymake · 27/05/2018 19:16

I would be furious as well if I was your SIL, you had no business being there with a contagious condition like impetigo.

AthenaAshton · 27/05/2018 19:16

@MiddleClassProblem indeed so. What a fun time they would all have.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 27/05/2018 19:17

MiddleClassProblem 🤣 brilliant, just read that thread and come straight to this one 🤣 theyre all out today!
