To really like Grand Theft Auto?

I'm mid 30s but still love video gaming. It takes a lot to get into a game the older I get but I have a few firm favourites- The Sims, SimCity and GTA. DH has just bought me GTA5 and I love it! The intestine world, driving around LA, the silly radio stations, the madly innapropriate dialogue - even the ironic stuff like the characters telling off their kids for playing violent video games - it's like an escape from reality. I can so see why kids get obsessed with stuff like this.

AIBU to love something that a lot of people (parents especially) my age frown upon?

PS store has a sale on atm for games. The old GTA's are on there.

UnicornRainbowColours · 23/05/2018 13:26

Love the sims and GTA I like to go on rampages it’s much fun haha

BadLad · 23/05/2018 13:31

Anyone played the Yakuza games?

If not, Yakuza Zero is a must-play.

If you only have a PS3, jump in with Yakuza 4.

A brilliant series.

ICantCopeAnymore · 23/05/2018 13:38

Another great game is Ni No Kuni. Underrated. And Nier Automater.

loopylou6 · 23/05/2018 13:39

I LOVE GTA, but it's let itself go a bit with all the silly jetpack and stuff, and they've got rid of the survivals, I used to really line bone yard.
I also love Cod modern warfare 4.
The last of us is an amazing game, as is heavy rain.

GTA5 mumsnet squad

Don't know how I missed this comment but WE NEED TO DO THIS

NotACleverName · 23/05/2018 14:07

If anyone here is a PS4 owner and doesn’t have Horizon Zero Dawn what are you doing? Love, love, love that game so much!

Roomba · 23/05/2018 14:16

I must confess that I enjoy GTA too!

I am old enough to remember playing GTA1 when it first came out. I was about 18 and we all found it hilarious as there weren't many games around with such a dark sense of humour.

I'd never let my kids play it in a million years, but I do find it a lot of fun and very funny. And the attention to small details, easter eggs, references to other games and films.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 23/05/2018 14:18

Watchdogs is a good play. Especially Watchdogs 2. They take the piss out of several big companies.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 23/05/2018 14:21

I love it, I follow the driving laws and cruise around going to fast food places and shopping for clothes. Online is best for this, although I have to mute otherwise your hear high pitched voices from 10 year olds.

OnTheporch · 23/05/2018 14:28

I remember the first GTA with its terrible graphics and Birdseye view but god it was fun! I remember the controversy of people saying you could just drive around killing random people - if only they knew what the game would eventually grow into 😁

On that note, I remember a thread on here years ago where a woman was moaning that the game was disgusting and should be banned. She'd watched her husband play it and was mortified to see him robbing and killing prostitutes. Some kind mumsnetter pointed out that you don't actually have to do those things, it's purely a choice and if he's doing that, it says more about him than the game itself. She didn't come back to the thread 😂

Are we doing this mumsnet crew or what then?! 😁

Played the story mode then it went online and got crazy. The soundtrack is brilliant footloose and Stevie nicks

JacquesHammer · 23/05/2018 14:47

Every time I see a thread on MN about GTA, I'm fondly reminded of the poster - whose name sadly escapes me - who seemed utterly convinced it was a biographical game, based on the lives of the creators.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 23/05/2018 14:51

Say what, Jacques?

Someone thought the makers actually went around stealing and shooting up shit? Well they might but.......

BeefyCakes · 23/05/2018 14:55

In addition to playing golf, my favourite character is Trevor, then Franklin, then Michael. I know it'll be years until GTA6 comes out, but there's just so much you can do, that it doesn't really matter.

Trevor in a dress is funny, I must admit I do browse the shops looking for shocking outfits for them all.

Who hated GTA4? Nico can just do one and get in the sea.

I'm totally fangirling GTA Grin

JacquesHammer · 23/05/2018 14:56

Tali I know right? Sadly it was in chat, although I believe I have screenshots somewhere.

My own particular favourite was "I wouldn't trust them to drive, surely they must get ideas from their own driving"

It was pure poetry

MissionItsPossible · 23/05/2018 15:07

@JacquesHammer Gosh, I wonder if they thought Super Mario was based on an Italian plumber who used to go around jumping on people's heads?

YouBetterWORK · 23/05/2018 15:14

I've not played much of it, but I did the thing of stealing a car then driving it like the most sensible considerate driver you ever saw!

I'm one of those people who get a headache from first person games though, which kind of limits your game choices. Im very much into Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy and Assassins Creed. Oh and Mass Effect!

I've heard uncharted is good also, like Tomb Raider but unfortunately we are an Xbox house here.

JacquesHammer · 23/05/2018 15:20

Gosh, I wonder if they thought Super Mario was based on an Italian plumber who used to go around jumping on people's heads?

I really, really hope so. Conversely maybe they were disappointed if they engaged a plumber who wasn't named Mario Grin

bizzers · 23/05/2018 15:29

BeefyCakes I wasn't a massive fan of Niko either. I did used to enjoy setting him up on online dating though Grin

Cockmagic · 23/05/2018 15:34

I used to fancy Niko 😂

And suppose the makers of Pac Man liked to dress up in yellow outifts and roam around a darkened maze munching pills.

OnTheporch · 23/05/2018 15:46

Tali, that sounds like a scene from Breaking Bad 😂

I'm not sure what my tag is, I'll sort it tonight!

Red Dead Redemption 2 will be released this year, I can’t wait. Rockstar are probably one of the greatest video game publishers ever. The amount of detail that goes into their games, they pushed back the release of RDR2 to make sure it was a finished product which in this day and age with the likes of EA, it’s rare.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 23/05/2018 17:47

My saying about EA: "If EA has touched it, you'll shit on you hands."

You know if EA have been near it, it's gonna be a pile of shite.
