To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

I got shivers down my own spine the other day when I read that whilst MM's dress cost the taxpayer around 30k, it would have been 22k to clad Grenfell in suitable materials.

So whilst we do have the freedom that other countries take for granted, we're still being trampled on from above.

Well thats the whole point of these things.

To keep people living in shit towns from rising up out of a false sense of comfort taken from a national fiction.

Homelessness has increased 50% since 2010.
Thousands of families are reliant on foodbanks.
Tens of thousands are in substandard rented accommodation and will never be able to buy.
The NHS and social care services are woefully underfunded, and disabled and elderly people are having to struggle with no support as a result.

I doubt any of those people will be feeling so lucky today, but I'm glad you've had a nice time.

I don't get it. Yes we have lots to be thankful for compared with many countries in the world, but what on earth does the royal wedding have to do with that?

MMs dress didn't cost the tax payers a penny.
And to suggest that no one no one should enjoy themselves,be happy,spend money because that is letting down other people who cannot do the same is ridiculous and achieves nothing.

Yes, bad things are happening in this country (and all over the rest of the world) on a daily basis.. but does that mean we shouldn't appreciate the positive things in life and be happy? What does being bitter and miserable achieve?

Whether you like the Royal family or not, they're a huge part of this country and today will go down in history whether you spend the day with a face like a slapped arse or not.

The hypocrisy of it all just shocks me. Why on earth were there two Gurkha riffles outside the church when we all know how badly the family of Girkha soldiers have been treated over the years by the UK government? The wealth displayed is just shocking, considering just how many homeless people we have in this country. Sure, you can be proud of it all. I am certainly not. I find it rather embarrassing.

Yes let's celebrate we have one of the most unequal societys in the Western world thanks to people born into wealth.

How on Earth is this a ‘positive thing’? Two people got married, very nice for them. I mean the poor homeless that were forcibly shoved out of the way probably don’t feel all the lovely gooey things you’re privileged to, but there we go.

It's not about being bitter and miserable, it's about being realistic. How lucky do you think the people that are struggling as a result of the actions of our country (not just the government, we could all be kinder to others) are feeling today?

For anyone wrapped up in royal wedding fluffiness, please make a commitment today to help someone else. Perhaps that's a neighbour that needs extra support, or giving a donation to a food bank, or even better, giving some hours to a charity. That's stuff to be proud of, not some randoms getting married.

Indeed. It was certainly a lot tidier in Windsor after all those scruffy homeless types had been moved on.

Some great replies on here, and I speak as someone for whom royal weddings are a guilty pleasure.
