To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

I love how it's now so trendy to hate being British! 🤣 and everyone that is proud of being British is a racist thug!

No one hates being British, what a ridiculous thing to say. I don’t hate being British, I do hate the expectation that we must all take joy and pride in a gratuitous wedding, whilst there are people in our country living in abject poverty. The same people they cleansed from the streets for said wedding. There’s no pride in that.

There’s no misery in a couple getting married, genuinely pleased for them and hope they will have a long and happy marriage, as I would anyone. There was no need for the pomp and circumstance though, it’s absolutely all smoke and mirrors for the public to distract from a much bigger shitshow currently going on. As for ‘republicans being miserable’ - I’ve read endless threads from royalists on here over the last few weeks that have been disgusting in their attitude - especially towards Meghan. It’s not those who aren’t fussed by the wedding who need to have words with themselves in the slightest.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 18:03

Yes to above poster.
I'm not socialist I'm capitalist.
However it grinds my gears that we spend so much on the royals. And were expected to kiss their feet because we're so lucky to have them Grin.

Other countries survive without royals, so why can't we?

I'm happy for the couple but would much rather stuff be done about the horrendous poverty and the NHS and the police service and the fire service etc etc etc. Rather then focusing on the totals and spending absurd amounts of money on them.

Indeed. Any wonder that Theresa May announced yesterday that she was making 9 more Tories Lords so she could get Brexit through the House of Lords easier.

A good day to bury controversial news.

pigsDOfly · 19/05/2018 18:15

I'm glad I live in this country there are so many worse countries to live in and for that I do think I'm lucky.

But does all the nonsense and all the millions of tax payers' money that has been wasted so one over privileged couple can get married make me proud to live here and feel lucky? No it bloody doesn't.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/05/2018 18:24

I am proud to be British, I am proud to be Scottish.

Never watched the wedding as ds had a sporting event on today, have watched a couple of clips online just to see the frock.

The obscene amount of money spent on a pretty girl in a nice frock getting married today has nothing to do with how I feel about my country.

Justanotherlurker · 19/05/2018 18:30

@kalapattar

If you knew what you was talkng about, 6 of those 9 voted remain.

It is also months overdue, Corbyn backtracked again so Labour appointed 3.

If people like to pretend they are privy to some "hide bad news" story, at least understand what you are talking about.

As for the wedding, I wasn't that interested and managed to avoid the whole thing.

WrongOnTheInternet · 19/05/2018 18:32

Only thing that would make me proud to be British would be changing the direction of our society away from its current trends of gross inequality and shit attitudes to those of our own people who have inherited the cumulative disadvantage of centuries. As witnessed by the concern about clearing the streets of homeless people before these overprivileged rich people pranced around. Thank goodness it's over now and we might stop having to hear about it. Cleaning the streets and improving the infrastructure to northern continental standards might help too.

Amanduh · 19/05/2018 18:33

I bloody love us.

Redact · 19/05/2018 18:39

Although I thought Meghan was a beautiful bride I have to agree that bread and circuses does pretty much sums it up

SusannahL · 19/05/2018 18:51

They are not 'homeless' in Windsor, they are beggars.

They arrive each day with all the 'homeless' paraphernalia, sleeping bags, dish for money, dog, then by late evening they get taxis back to Slough where they live, having collected quite a substantial sum given by tourists.

Taxi drivers in Windsor have confirmed this fact.

WrongOnTheInternet · 19/05/2018 18:55

Fine. Beggars then. What alternatives do they realistically have? What are their backgrounds, did they ever have any other choices? Do you know what it's like coming from those sort of backgrounds?

Twofishfingers · 19/05/2018 18:56

Of course Susannah. That's obviously a fact if some random taxi driver told you. Speak to the charities and shelters doing work in the area maybe they have more credible and backed-up facts?

RunMummyRun68 · 19/05/2018 18:57

Bloody hell susannah that's shocking!

kalapattar · 19/05/2018 18:57

It's interesting timing. Granted they probably won't make much difference but the timing on the Friday before such an event. Interesting.

HateIsNotGood · 19/05/2018 18:58

WhatOn - can you please clarify "northern continental standards" please? Are they in some way superior to Southern, Eastern or Western Continental standards? Are you degrading Island Nation standards?

kalapattar · 19/05/2018 18:59

Good for you. I turned on Classic FM and it was coming live from Windsor. Switched to Gold and they were having a Best of British day to celebrate the wedding. It was lead story on the Today programme.

BBC1 had the story of Meghan's Dad as its lead story last week - before Gaza.

Opium for the masses

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 19:00

So all homeless then must be beggars? Please. Let's not bullshit, there's homeless people as well as beggars but all have been shipped out so they can have a perfect day.

If they removed the homeless off the streets to improve the image all those tents seem even worse Grin

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 19/05/2018 19:01

We really are so bloody lucky op! My husband works in very deprived countries. Cambodia, Somalia, Ivory Coast, Afghanistan etc. Little to no education, lack of choice, lack of basic food and shelter. Women are largely suppressed, DH never sees women on the streets in Kabul and he's been there for 18 months in total. In comparison even the poor and the homeless in this country are relatively lucky. We are protected by laws and fair government, and free health care. Charities and food banks. So yes. I was really proud to be British today and every day.

siwel123 · 19/05/2018 19:03

Can i say 100 people died today in cuba. A 2 minute segment was on that. The royal wedding took well over 10 minutes.

Go on the BBC news website and literally you have to scroll down multiple articles of the wedding to hear about a tradgedy.

jasjas1973 · 19/05/2018 19:04

Yes i was dead proud watching Windsor Council and Police clearing the homeless off the streets of Windsor....

FFS it was two people getting married and in a few years time it ll be 2 people getting divorced, after finding their marriage cant take the strain of constant media intrusion driven by people who have nothing better in their lives.

I m proud of the UK for example when we design a new computer chip or invent a medicine that ll change lives but not this media farce.

kalapattar · 19/05/2018 19:04

I was really proud to be British today and every day

I am lucky to be British. But a Royal Wedding doesn't make me proud.

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 19/05/2018 19:09

I didn't mention the wedding making me feel that. And the Cuba disaster happened yesterday.

Justanotherlurker · 19/05/2018 19:10

It's interesting timing. Granted they probably won't make much difference but the timing on the Friday before such an event. Interesting.

That this was a routine top up of the lords, that had been delayed from earlier in the year.

Party political peers are periodically created when No 10 indicates that it wishes to do so, although this round had been delayed for months.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/may/18/pm-set-to-nominate-10-tory-peers-in-attempt-to-overcome-brexit-defeats

19 Lords have passed away in the last 18 months, so this doesn't even bring it back up to the previous level, so is in line with May's wish to slowly reduce the number of Lords.

Out of the 9 that have been nominated, only 6 are ex-MPs, and of those only 1 is pro-leave - which is hardly going to bolster Brexit support. Labour are also adding 3 peers, and the DUP 1 - so not exactly the government just loading up the HoL in a one-off isolated fashion or in a clandestine manner.

But I am derailing the thread

madeyemoodysmum · 19/05/2018 19:10

Blame the elected govt for the situations in this country.

Your looking in the wrong direction.

GirlsBlouse17 · 19/05/2018 19:12

Don't worry, there probably won't be another big royal wedding here for another 20 years or so
